Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Queen Regina is the main antagonist in which ABC TV series that premiered in 2011?

Answer: Once Upon a Time

Queen Regina or, better still, "The Evil Queen", uses her power to curse the Enchanted Forest and, in doing so, transports the fairy tale characters to the real world town of Storybrooke. Here they are trapped with no magic and no memory of what has transpired.

The series, created by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, stars Ginnifer Goodwin as Snow White, Lana Parrilla as the evil Queen Regina and Robert Carlyle as Rumplestiltskin.
2. What is the name of the warlock who is often called "the family witch doctor" by Samantha in the television series "Bewitched"?

Answer: Dr Bombay

"Bewitched" was an ABC sitcom that ran for eight seasons between 1964 and 1972. Elizabeth Montgomery played the lead role of Samantha Stephens in all 254 episodes and, in 24 of these she also portrayed her look-alike cousin Serena. Dr Bombay is often summonsed when some "witchy" disease has gone terribly awry.

He tends to make grand appearances, wears ridiculous costumes, cracks terrible jokes and, most times, comes complete with a buxom beauty at his side. Bernard Fox reprised the role of Dr Bombay in eighteen separate episodes though his first appearance on the show (in 1966) was as a professional detector of witches by the name of Osgood Rightmire. Dr Bombay would also make appearances on the spin-off series "Tabitha" and the soap opera "Passions".
3. Dr Jonas Martin is a highly accomplished warlock in which television programme that centres around the vampire brothers Damon and Stefan Salvatore?

Answer: The Vampire Diaries

Dr Martin appears in the second season of the show and works in league with the vampires in an effort to rescue his daughter. In all he appears during six episodes and is killed by Stephan when he appears to attack Bonnie Bennett, a witch and one of the main characters in the show. "The Vampire Diaries" is a supernatural drama series aimed primarily at the teenage market and features the two Salvatore brothers ensnared in a love triangle with the main protagonist Elena Gilbert.
4. Which sorceress from the DC Comics universe, the daughter of Giovanni Zatara, became a recurring character in the final three seasons of the television series "Smallville"?

Answer: Zatanna

Zatanna, played by Serinda Swan, who is a descendant of the Homo Magi race (on her mother's side) makes her first appearance in the season eight episode "Hex". A short storyline in later episodes will see Zatanna use the Green Arrow to obtain the Book of Zatara, a magical book that her father once owned with the aim of using it to resurrect her now deceased parent. Zatanna however, must arrive at the conclusion that this venture is ill fated on her own as Green Arrow is powerless to intervene and Superman is vulnerable to her magic. "Smallville" was not Zatanna's first appearance on the small screen with roles written for her in "Batman: The Animated Series", "Gotham Girls", "Justice League Unlimited" and "Young Justice".
5. Which wizard, unlike his namesake, does not land on all fours when he accidentally transports himself from the 11th century to 1969 England?

Answer: Catweazle

Two seasons of "Catweazle" were screened by ITV on British television in 1970 and 1971. The title character, portrayed by Geoffrey Bayldon, finds himself bemused and marvelled at the sorcery that represents modern technology. He sees his caretaker, a young lad named Edward "Carrot" Bennet, as a powerful wizard when he performs simple functions such as turning on the lights.

This sudden shift in culture allows the writers to create some absurd scenarios such as when Carrot cannot talk due to a bout of laryngitis, Catweazle endeavours to make a potion by crushing an LP record with some herbs in an effort to bring Edward's voice back.
6. What is the surname of the witch in the title of the television series "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch"?

Answer: Spellman

Melissa Joan Hart portrays Sabrina in this American sitcom that first aired in 1996 on ABC. Sabrina, herself, had her origins in the "Archie" series of comics. The unofficial pilot of the TV series, which was aired on Showtime a little earlier in 1996, had Sabrina's surname as Sawyer. Sabrina lives with her 500 year old aunts Hilda and Zelda and, at the age of sixteen, discovers that she is blessed with magical abilities.

Her problem however, is that she has little idea as to how she can use them which gives rise to numerous ticklish situations and room for the series to install its brand of humour.
7. Making her first appearance in 1971's "Archie's TV Funnies" was which 1500 year old, beer swilling, man crazy witch?

Answer: Broom Hilda

Created by Russell Myers, Hilda originally appeared as a comic strip in American newspapers. She is a green skinned witch with a wart on her nose who is constantly hunting for a husband. Most of her stories will carry some form of gag around this habit of hers.

When her other peculiarities; rough housing, smoking cigars and drinking beer are added to the mix it creates the scene for many jokes. "Archie's TV Funnies" was an animated series whose setting was a television studio where Archie is the manager.

The studio aired a range of cartoons during each episode which included "Broom Hilda", "Smokey Stover" and "Dick Tracy".
8. A seriously powerful witch who originally lived in the 17th century, Antonia Gavilan sought to destroy the vampires in which HBO television series?

Answer: True Blood

Antonia used her coven to help her conjure a spell that would compel all vampires within a twenty mile radius to walk out into the sunlight. She was captured during the Spanish Inquisition and burned at the stake. Four hundred years later her spirit is summonsed by Marnie Stonebrook whose body Antonia then takes over and endeavours to create the same spell again. "True Blood" first aired in 2008 and stars Anna Paquin in the lead role of Sookie Stackhouse. Antonia makes her first appearance on the show during the season four episode "She's Not There".
9. Which of the following was *NOT* a witch on the television series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"?

Answer: Cassie Newton

Willow Rosenberg's name regularly appears on lists citing favourite television female characters. Her introduction into this series sees her as a shy, geeky though optimistic young lady who eventually discovers that she has inherent magical abilities. Her character has been hailed as one of the most positive examples of Jewish females and lesbian relationships on the small screen. During the course of the series we see her develop a dependency on magic in much the same way as a junkie comes to rely on their drug habit and, for one season (six), become the villain of the show.
Tara Maclay, portrayed by Amber Benson, is a shy and virtuous girl who is introduced during season four. She meets Willow at a Wicca meeting and in the course of exploring their magical abilities they fall in love. Tara is killed by a stray bullet in season six.
Amy Madison inherits her powers from her mother and appears during the first season of the show. During season three she turns herself into a rat to escape a perilous situation, not realising that in this form she would be unable to cast the spell to return her to human form. When Willow returns her to her normal self in season six she will become an enemy of Buffy and her crew.
Cassie Newton has no magic powers. She appears in season seven and predicts her own death. When Buffy saves her from a booby trap it appears that she may have escaped the curse but she collapses and dies from an inherited heart condition.
10. Who portrayed Cole Turner, a half demon with magical powers, in the WB television series "Charmed"?

Answer: Julian McMahon

Turner is a half human/half demon being who is known in the demon world as Balthazor, a legendary demon assassin. He is gifted with the ability to teleport himself and can summon up balls of energy that he dispatches at his assailants. His mission in the series is to kill the "Charmed" sisters but he runs into one little hiccup - he falls in love with one of them. "Charmed", produced by Aaron Spelling ran for eight seasons from 1998 to 2006. McMahon would feature in 57 episodes.
