Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In June of 2003, two teen-aged brothers (14 and 16) shot at passing vehicles on Interstate 40 in Tennessee. They killed one person and injured another. What video game was blamed for their actions when they went to trial?

Answer: "Grand Theft Auto III"

The defense maintained that the game "Grand Theft Auto III" was to blame. The two juveniles pleaded guilty to reckless homicide, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment. Under Tennessee law they could not be tried as adults and the maximum penalty was incarceration in a juvenile facility until they were 19 years of age.

The victims sued Sony Games and Rock Star Games for 2.5 million dollars in damages. The case was settled for an undisclosed sum out of court.
2. In 2005 a South Korean Man died after playing "Star Craft" for 50 hours straight.

Answer: True

Lee Seung Seop was addicted to "Star Craft". He had lost his girlfriend, his job, and was being kicked out of his home because of his need to play continuously. He died from cardiac arrest after playing for over 50 hours without ever taking a break. Video game addiction has not been formally recognised as a disorder, it has been proposed for inclusion. Players have been known to play without eating, drinking, or taking any kind of break until they pass out or occasionally die.
3. The killers in the Columbine High School Massacre were said to have been inspired to carry out their actions by what video game?

Answer: "Doom"

"Doom" was considered to be ahead of its time when it came out in 1993. It was a first-person shooter game with excellent graphics. It has been estimated that within two years of its release that over 10 million people had played this game. The graphic violence of the game was blamed for pushing two unstable teenagers over the edge.
4. Which American university was the victim of a 2007 massacre that was blamed on the video game "Counter-Strike"?

Answer: Virginia Tech

Seung-hui Cho had displayed signs of mental illness for most of his life. But when he went on a rampage at Virginia Tech killing 32 people and injuring at least 25 others his family's attorney, Jack Thompson, insisted that this video game was to blame. None of his friends or roommates had ever seen him play the game.

These antics caused the attorney to be disbarred. The public school system was then held accountable as was the family as the suspect had shot himself.
5. The game "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" has been criticised for it's use of racial profiling.

Answer: True

In this game players are involved in gang warfare involving Haitian gangs and Cuban gangs. When playing the game the player takes on the role of a hitman who has just gotten out of prison for murder. Threats of a law-suit by the Haitian-American Coalition have caused some changes to be made.

In New Mexico a lawsuit was brought against the producers of the game claiming it caused a teenager to murder his family. The teenager was given a death sentence.
6. In Canada in 2008, what did 15 year old Brandon Crisp do when his parents took his Xbox 360 away from him because he played it too much?

Answer: He ran away

Brandon ran away from home into the woods. Two hunters found his dead body three weeks later underneath a tree that he had apparently fallen from. He was obsessed with playing the game "Call of Duty IV: Modern Warfare". Over 1,600 citizens as well as numerous law enforcement agencies were involved with searching for him.
7. In 2000 a 15 year teenager in Spain killed his family with a katana while claiming that he was a character from the video game "Final Fantasy VIII". What is a katana?

Answer: A samurai sword

A katana is the proper name for a single edge Japanese samurai sword. Jose Pardo claimed he was on a mission that appears in the game and that he was one of the characters from the game. Was this a psychotic break brought on from playing the game for 30 continuous hours or was this individual already mentally ill? Can we know for sure?
8. The game "DeathRace" came out in 1976(!). This violent game was inspired by the movie "Death Race 2000" which starred what famous pugilistic actor?

Answer: Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone starred in "Death Race 2000" with David Carradine. In this game you attempted to kill gremlins with your car. The gremlins would squeal when you hit them and then turn into tombstones. The game was considered very controversial when it came out. If you can find a copy of the game today, it will usually sell for over $2,500.
9. In which country was the video game "ManHunt" blamed for the stabbing murder of Stefan Pakeerah by a 17 year old friend?

Answer: England

This 2004 murder occurred in Leicester, in the English Midlands. 17 year old Warren Leblanc savagely murdered his 14 year old friend with a claw hammer and a knife copying a scene out of the video game "Manhunt". Both boys were enthralled with game and spent hours everyday playing.

In this game players are awarded points for performing the most gruesome murder. This game was so gruesome that the country on New Zealand banned it. Warren Leblanc pleaded guilty to the murder but insisted the game made him do it.
10. In 2007 The American Psychological Association issued this statement:"Psychological research confirms that violent video games can increase children's aggression, BUT that parents moderate all the negative effects".

Answer: True

As shocking as that may seem to some that answer is true and they are not the only one's who hold this view. A study done at Harvard University that included 1,200 middle school students found that "playing video games did not have a particularly negative effect on the researched group".
