Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these games features a playable character known by the name 'Kaeru' in Japan?

Answer: Chrono Trigger

Released for the first time on the SNES (back in 1995), "Chrono Trigger" is a beloved non-"Final Fantasy" Square RPG that persisted at the top of the best RPGs lists throughout the decade, eventually returning to players' hands on the DS in 2008. A sprawling adventure through time, the game focuses on Crono as he navigates different eras, collecting new party members from the majority of them all with the aim of gaining strength and defeating the game's final boss at the End of Time.

Amongst these additional party members are Lucca, Marle, Robo, Ayla, and Frog, who happens to be an anthropomorphic frog capable of wielding a sword (the Masamune!). In Japan, his name is 'Kaeru', which also translates to 'Frog'.
2. What award-winning 2019 role-playing game stylized to look like it's set in an oil painting uses a game mechanic called the 'Thought Cabinet'?

Answer: Disco Elysium

Although the general idea of role-playing games, especially those involving the random aspect of dice, has been around since before video gaming, it's rare to see the hallmarks of pen-and-paper RPGs filter into the medium. This being said, "Disco Elysium" took it and ran in a unique way, building a world and a system that elaborated on the old d20 conceit, having players interact with characters and items and leveraging special skills (built up by character traits and interactions and using the Thought Cabinet) to solve a mystery in an old seaside town.

There is next to no actual combat in this game-- just straight-up role-playing. "Disco Elysium" was regarded by many outlets as a Game of the Year upon its release.
3. Onett, Twoson, Threed, and Fourside are all locations in what classic SNES RPG?

Answer: Earthbound

Grounded with the idea of Earth but pushing things a bit into the realm of the surreal, the 1994 SNES game "Earthbound" had players take on the role of Ness, a young boy who set out on an extensive adventure with a group of misfits (Paula, Jeff, Poo) to stop the evil Gigyas. Along the way they encountered numerous cities (the sequence of them in the question, for instance, along with many others) and faced off against mundane and downright odd foes to advance onwards, levelling up baseball bats, PSI powers, yo-yos, and other equipment to get by.

After Ness' inclusion in "Super Smash Bros.", the game saw a resurgence in popularity despite being a sequel to a game that was never released outside of Japan at that time, "Mother".
4. Which of these is a "World of Warcraft" expansion?

Answer: Mists of Pandaria

Although all of the possible answers here are PC expansions and DLC for role-playing games, "Mists of Pandaria" is the only one, as absurd as it may sound, for "World of Warcraft". Released as the game's fourth expansion in 2012, it provided a distinct Asian influence, creating a new race known as the Pandaren and having players travel through Pandaria. The expansion also introduced Monks as a playable class.

As for the others, "Eye of the North" was DLC for "Guild Wars", bridging the story into "Guild Wars 2", "Chains of Promathia" was for "Final Fantasy XI Online", and "The Asian Dynasties" was an expansion for "Age of Empires III".
5. In "Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4", the personas themselves are summoned in battle using which of these?

Answer: Tarot cards

In each of the "Persona" games, players proceed into battles that place take in dream worlds or alternate universes, and to aid them against complex foes, they need to activate Personas that are powered up through their social links in real or waking life.

While in "Persona 3" these Personas were activated by firing a gun, "Persona 4" had its party members utilize tarot cards to summon these forth. It isn't the only time tarot has been seen in the game either; across the series, new Personas are attained through Skill Cards, also representing Major Arcana of the tarot, which can further fuse into stronger aid.
6. Who of these was the protagonist of "Final Fantasy XIII"?

Answer: Lightning

While fans of the franchise might recognize Cloud as a key name to keep in mind since he appeared as the protagonist of "Final Fantasy VII" (and many other games since), this question pertains to a game in the series that released twelve years later. "Final Fantasy XIII's" lead is Lightning, a former soldier out to oppose the Sanctum in an effort to save her sister before they fall victim to their magical world's dark and nefarious powers. Lightning reappeared in both of the game's canon sequels, "Final Fantasy XIII-2" and "Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII".
7. Solaire of Astora, found in "Dark Souls", is known for what key phrase?

Answer: "Praise the Sun!"

As the player character in "Dark Souls" you're in for a bit of an uphill battle, ascending from complete and utter death and collecting souls in an effort to unearth the truth about your tragic past. You're not completely alone-- Solaire of Astoria follows an uncannily similar path albeit with a sunnier disposition.

It's that disposition of praising the sun that gets him into a lick of trouble before the end of the game though you do have the opportunity to help your fellow adventurer; he'll help you in return.
8. In "Darkest Dungeon", Torches, like the ones depicted can be used to refill your Light Meter. What do you collect as this meter diminishes?

Answer: Stress

There's potentially a fine balance to strive for as you send your party into the dungeons of "Darkest Dungeon" searching for treasures and all manner of evil, Lovecraftian foes. Bringing and finding Torches will allow your Light Meter to stay high, and while there are clear benefits to doing this (like not getting surprised and increased dodge bonuses), there are also benefits to the adverse (like bonus rewards).

The problem is that while some thrive under stress, others may sustain more critical status ailments as a result of the darkness.
9. Which of these character classes is found in "Diablo II", but not "Diablo III"?

Answer: Druid

Though only five classes were created for "Diablo II" (the Amazon, the Barbarian, the Necromancer, the Paladin, and the Sorceress), the Druid and the Assassin were introduced in the game's expansion, "Lord of Destruction", allowing for further styles of gameplay to emerge.

The Druid, in addition to having animal aid, elemental capabilities, and shapeshifting options, could be a hearty melee foe as well. He didn't make the cut for "Diablo III" though, really, only the Barbarian and Necromancer classes retained their names during that transition.

The Druid would instead make its reappearance with the announcement of "Diablo IV".
10. These depict the currency found in what post-apocalyptic RPG series?

Answer: Fallout

Seeing as the games of the "Fallout" series situate themselves in a a wasteland in the aftermath of a nuclear disaster, it should come as no surprise that something as rudimentary as the humble bottle cap is the primary form of currency you'll use throughout your adventure. Most common of the bunch are, ironically, caps from a common brand of soda in the post-apocalypse: Nuka-Cola. You'll find them throughout the games as well.
