Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The FIS freestyle competition that is held throughout the film originates in which ski resort?

Answer: Squaw Valley, CA

Squaw Valley reached the height of its popularity in 1960, hosting that year's Winter Olympics. In that Olympiad, the USA Hockey team, made entirely of amateur players, won the gold medal. This served as the prelude to the "Miracle on Ice" gold-medal-winning USA Hockey team in the 1980 Olympics, also held in the USA (Lake Placid).
2. Which of the six male members of the Rat Pack DID NOT qualify for the three-day World Cup competition?

Answer: Fergie

Fergie The Motormouth ("Shut Up!") was one of the cuts from the original qualifying runs. The rest of the Rat Pack was also concerned about Dogger's failure to qualify ("Fergie and Dogger ski better than most of the Europeans") but Dogger was not one of the official Pack members. The seventh official member was Michelle, aka "Banana Pants."
3. Harkin arrived for his first World Cup event from the small town of Foddersbury, ID. What was the hometown of fellow Rat Pack member Slasher?

Answer: Breckenridge, CO

Slasher's hometown was mentioned by the public address announcer as he was taking the starting gun for the ballet portion of the competition, the first of the three events.
4. The reigning FIS World Cup champion, Rudolf Garmischt, also competed in the "Hot Dog" competition and was the overwhelming favorite prior to the start. What was "Rudi's" hometown?

Answer: Kitzbuehl, Austria

Kitzbuehl is home to one of the most famous (and dangerous) actual World Cup downhill courses in the world. Austrian skiers are tradtionally packed near the top of most Alpine World Cup standings every year. Because of his name, Rudi is often considered to be German. His hometown was also announced over the PA as he entered the starting gate for freestyle ballet.
5. As in Olympic Track and Field events, World Cup freestylers in the movie each received a numbered white flag that was attached to their ski suits. Harkin was assigned number 149, and Rudi wore 101. What number was assigned to Squirrel?

Answer: 123

All of the numbers listed are "Rat Pack" assigned. Dan was number 71, 70 belonged to Slasher and Kendo "Kamikaze" skied with 42.
6. Which of the following IS NOT used by Dan as a part of his "specialty" mixed drink that he serves, known as the Legspreader?

Answer: Whiskey

Sylvia (played by a young and fresh-from-Playboy Shannon Tweed) throws a pre-competition party at her estate to which all of the skiers are invited. After a few hours, Dan ends up serving drinks behind the basement bar when a voluptuous lady sits down and asks to be served "something hot." Dan's ingredients: "Start with some vodka, then some scotch...a little brandy, some Myers Rum, and the splash of a lemon twist."
7. As Dan raises a toast to Harkin to welcome him as the newest member of the Rat Pack, he assigns him two nicknames. One is "The Foddersbury Flash." What was the other?

Answer: Snake Legs Banks

This "induction" takes place in the lodge, right before the qualifying results are posted. From Question 2, all of the Rat Pack members, including Harkin, qualify - with the exception of Fergie.
8. Just before the beginning of the ballet event, as the Rat Pack is assembling and warming up, Dan arrives at the slope being carted in a stretcher and covered in a blanket. Dan...

Answer: smuggled beer onto the slope for the Rat Pack.

Dan faked an injury and used the medical stretcher to hide four 12-packs of Coors, which gets tossed to the Rat Pack. After Rudi and his team arrive, Rudi discloses that he slept with Harkin's girl Sunny. However, Harkin had also hooked up the prior evening with Rudi's ex, Sylvia, in a great hot tub scene.
9. At the BroomBall game between "Rudi's Gang (The Rudettes)" and the Rat Pack, who scores the first goal for the Rat Pack?

Answer: Kendo

BroomBall is played on an ice hockey rink with brooms used as sticks and a large rubber ball (about the size of an Olympic shot put) as a puck. Kendo was actually playing goaltender for the Pack as well; he made a save, ran all the way down to the other end, deked the Austrian goalie and threw it in the net.

The Rat Pack got destroyed in the game, however. As Dan said afterwards, "We were small, but we were slow!"
10. For the opening faceoff of BroomBall, the referee instructs both teams to "play fair...and keep your sticks down!" As he drops the ball, the referee is immediately taken out with a high stick to the chin. Who clocked the ref?

Answer: Dan

Dan and Rudi take the opening draw and Dan delivers the broom shot. Rudi later lays out Harkin with a left hook. Squirrel is the victim of an open-ice hip check. Later, Dan confronts the female Austrian team member and asks "Free for dinner?" before she lays him out with a right cross. The Austrian girl and Banana Pants then get into a catfight.
11. While practicing, Rudi and everyone in his gang wipe out on the slope, as all of the ski bindings loosened. Which freestyle event were "The Rudettes" preparing for when this happened?

Answer: Moguls

The night before, after the BroomBall game, Dan and Harkin sabotage all the Austrian team's skis by accessing the Austrian locker room. Dan was able to get in because the Austrian team had been assigned Dan's own combination lock!
12. As the Rat Pack members are riding in the tram car lift to the aerials event, Squirrel gets stuck in his own car...until he gets a visit and a "gift" from Tracy. What was the number of the tram car that Squirrel and Tracy were "riding" in?

Answer: 59

Since there were five skiers and only enough room for four on a tram car, the Rat Pack "threw numbers" to see who would have to ride alone. Dan tipped off everyone else so that Squirrel would lose. After the four others left in the first car (number 34), Squirrel thought he'd ride alone...until Tracy jumped in at the last second. Squirrel had a lot of extra places to apply his zinc oxide on that ride!
13. As Dan is setting the rules for the final "Chinese Downhill" race, he wants to set up a pot of $50 per man for a winner-take-all prize...until he realizes he has no cash. He then reduces the entrance fee to $40 per man. Who spotted Dan the initial $40?

Answer: Squirrel

After the judges had "awarded" the overall competition championship to Rudi, Dan felt that a race was in order to "have the trophy go to the REAL champion" (who he, and the fans, thought was Harkin). Dan and Rudi agreed to the "Chinese Downhill," a spectacular anything-goes downhill race, in which the winner would receive the cash pot and the championship trophy.
14. "And now for the rules of the International Chinese Downhill...there are none!" In keeping with these guidelines, one of "The Rudettes" rigs himself with a smoke machine that he activates during the race to blind the other skiers. Which member of the Rat Pack eliminates the "smoke machine skier" by kicking him off course and forcing him to crash into a tree?

Answer: Kendo

Kendo provides the well-placed kick ("Sayonara!"). Rudi and Harkin battle their way down the mountain at the front of the pack; in the end, Harkin beats Rudi to the trophy and grabs it to win the Chinese Downhill! An action-packed ending to a film scattered with lots of exciting (and in some cases extreme) skiing scenes!
15. David Naughton starred in "Hot Dog" as the drunken Irish leader of the Rat Pack, Dan O'Callahan. David Naughton had achieved a level of notoriety a few years before the making of the film by becoming one of the first actors to star in the musical versions of TV commercials advertising which of the following popular soft drinks?

Answer: Dr. Pepper

You might have been thinking of the famous songs accompanying commercials for Coke ("I'd like to teach the world to sing...I'd like to buy the world a Coke"), A&W ("A&W Root Beer's got that frosty mug taste") or 7-Up ("Feelin' 7-Up I'm Feelin' 7-Up"). But, David Naughton was one of the first to sing the catchy Dr. Pepper jingle "I'm a Pepper; he's a Pepper; she's a Pepper; we're a Pepper...wouldn't you like to be a Pepper too?" in a TV commercial.
