Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Just to refresh your memory, "Settlers of Catan" is a strategy game where players build settlements and cities on a board adjacent to various resource hexagons. At each roll of the die, players gain the resources that the number rolled is on, and use their turns to attempt to gain victory points that will enable you to win. This is the Reader's Digest supremely condensed version. But to get started there are 5 resources on a basic "Settlers", "Cities" and "Seafarers" board. Which of the ones listed below is not a resource?
2. At the start of the game (specifically "Settlers" and Seafarers") each player will have 2 settlements and 2 roads on the board. You get to place where these go as long as they are more than 2 spots away from any other settlement. You can gain 2 victory points in the games by having the longest road. How many road portions does it take to have the longest road?
3. In two of the games you can also have the largest army. This occurs when you buy development cards using sheep, wheat and rock resources. The soldier card enables you to move what is called the "robber" piece to any spot on the board, take a card from the player that it affects and it prevents that player(s) from collecting that particular resource on a die roll. There is one game of the 3 that does not have a largest army. Which one is it?
4. Lets talk about some of the resources for a minute. In addition to wood, what other resource do you need to build a road?
5. In addition to ore/rock, what other resource do you need to upgrade your settlement into a city?
6. How many victory points does it take to win "Settlers of Catan" & "Seafarers of Catan"?
7. In "Cities & Knights of Catan" the basic rules set out in the previous games are used, but then a few other things are thrown in to challenge you. I mentioned knights earlier. There are 3 levels of knights and their primary purpose is to defend your area from the barbarians that attack. You make the barbarians come closer every time you roll a 6 sided die and it comes up with the black barbarian ship. Whan it attacks, you count up the number of cities that are currently on the board. That equals the strength of the barbarian attack. You need to have that many or more active knights on the board to repel the barbarian. What two resources does it take to "buy" a knight?
8. Another cool add-on to "Cities" consists of commodity cards. In the other two games if you had a city on a resource when that die roll is cast, you would accumulate two of that resource. In "Cities" if you have a city on rock/ore, wood and sheep instead of two of that resource you will get a resource and its equivalent commodity. The commidites actually enable you to buy additions to your city in 3 different areas. When you get to a certain point in the city additions you will have created a metropolis that makes your city worth 4 victory points. Yahoo--that is nearly 1/3 of the points necessary to win the game right there. I stated that there are 3 commodity cards. So which one listed below is not a commodity card?
9. In "Cities" you also have a chance to meet the merchant. This is a purple cone shaped piece that enables you to trade any resource at a specific ratio. What ratio is that?
10. The games are all addicting fun but there is a limited number of people that can play unless you buy the expansion pack. What is the maximum number of players to each board without the expansion pack?
