Medicine and Illness in Songs Trivia Questions

1. This song on Linkin Park's last album turned out to be way too true for the song's writer and singer, Chester Bennington. What song is it?

From Quiz
More Songs About Suicide

Answer: Nobody Can Save Me

In 2017, Linkin Park put out their last album, "One More Light." On that album, there was a song called "Nobody Can Save Me." It turns out Chester Bennington was not kidding when he sang that. Shortly after "One More Light" came out, Bennington hanged himself. Apparently nobody could save him. There is evidence that one of the major things that caused Bennington to kill himself was the suicide of his hero, Chris Cornell, which happened just a couple months earlier. Bennington tweeted that he didn't want to live in a world without Chris Cornell, and he killed himself on Cornell's birthday, and he killed himself the same way Cornell did. The other answers are wrong because those songs aren't on Linkin Park's last album.

2. What popular band in the early 1990s released a song called "Jeremy?"

From Quiz Songs about Suicide

Answer: Pearl Jam

In 1991, Pearl Jam released their debut album "Ten." The album has since been certified 13 times platinum. It is considered one of the greatest rock and roll debut albums of all time. Some people even consider it one of the greatest rock and roll albums of all time, debut or not. Several songs from this album, particularly the hit singles, are now regarded by many people as some of the greatest rock songs ever written. One of those songs is "Jeremy." This song tells the true story of a teenage boy named Jeremy Wade Delle who shot himself at school in the classroom in front of his whole class. Singer/songwriter Eddie Vedder read this story in the Dallas Morning News. According to the story, Delle arrived late to class one day and his teacher told him that he needed to get an admittance slip from the office to be in class. Delle left the class, but instead of going to the office, he went to his locker to get his gun. He returned to the classroom, said "Missy, I got what I really went for," and then shot himself before anyone could react. According to the song, one of the reasons Delle was suicidal was because his parents ignored him. In real life, his parents were divorced and they indeed both ignored him. Vedder said that the story reminded him of a different boy that he knew in real life. Vedder had bullied this boy, as he admitted in the beginning of the second verse. Vedder said in an interview that this boy shot up an oceanography room.

"...So there's no simple explanation For anything important any of us do And yea the human tragedy consists in the necessity of living with the consequences Under pressure, under pressure" These lyrics are a direct paraphrase from Hugh MacLennan's "The Watch That Ends the Night" and reflect the fact that in tragedy we must often live with the consequences of our actions. In 1957, MacLennan had written his famous book in the midst of personal tragedy that he had been suffering. In particular, he had fallen into a deep depression as the result of the death of his wife Dorothy Duncan. During this period, MacLennan contemplated suicide. It was his courage to not go through with his suicidal thoughts that inspired the song "Courage (for Hugh MacLennan).
