Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Ooo, eee, oo ah ah, ting tang, walla walla bing bang" is the refrain from which song of the late 1950s?

Answer: Witch Doctor

Whether you prefer the original by David Seville, who also wrote the song, or The Chipmunks version, this is a fun song to sing, as it's what to do about love, the favorite subject of a lot of music. The Chipmunks (Alvin, Simon and Theodore) used a slightly different refrain, "Ooh to the eee, The ooh, the aah aah, To the Ting, to the tang, The wallawalla bingbang..."
2. The Who had a hit with which of these doctors?

Answer: Doctor Jimmy

"Doctor Jimmy" appeared on The Who album 'Quadrophenia', and its lyrics strongly suggest a drug/alcohol related theme. "...Doctor Jimmy and Mister Jim, When I'm pilled you don't notice him. He only comes out when I drink my gin...".
3. Which of these choices is the Rolling Stones hit?

Answer: Dear Doctor

"Oh, help me, please doctor, I'm damaged, There's a pain where there once was a heart..." Thus begins the short tale of a man about to be wed, but he calls his gal 'a bow-legged sow' even as he dresses for the wedding. In his pocket he finds a 'Dear John' letter from her calling off the wedding, and he is returned to good health once more.
4. Steely Dan had a hit with which song?

Answer: Doctor Wu

"Katy tried I was halfway crucified, Are you with me Doctor Wu?..." In this song Katy and/or Doctor Wu may represent an addiction, possibly from alcohol to drugs, or from one drug to a better/worse drug. Doctor Wu may represent a 'drug buddy', but it's all open to interpretation by the listener.
5. Which doctor appeared on the Beatles album 'Revolver'?

Answer: Doctor Robert

The Beatles had the song Doctor Robert (Lennon & McCartney), which appears to be another drug related song: "Ring my friend I said you'd call Day or night he'll be there Doctor Robert..." Since the good doctor dispenses medicine in a 'special cup', the reference may be to Methodone, and may refer either to beating an addiction or changing to another. Then again, the doctor may just be a supplier. It's possible the doctor is patterned after Dr. Robert McPhail, a character in Aldous Huxley's novel "Island".
There is also a possibility that "Ring" was short for "Ringo".
6. A song named "Doctor Please" was recorded by which two groups?

Answer: Jet Lag Gemini and Blue Cheer

Jet Lag Gemini's song begins, "Well I set sail to find the edge of the planet, Instead I fell off..."
Blue Cheer's: "Help me please, Doctor...I need your pain killer..." on their album 'Vincebus Eruptum'.
UFO had "Doctor, Doctor, Please": "Oh, the mess I'm in..." on their album 'Phenomenon'.
7. Jackson Browne's memorable hit was which one?

Answer: Doctor My Eyes

This was a very popular song, in spite of the meaning not being entirely clear: is the word 'doctor' a noun or a verb? Does it really matter?
The lyrics are open to interpretation, but seem to indicate that the protagonist needs help in understanding what he sees, and cannot take in the pain and suffering of the world. Or perhaps he has seen too much and has become inured to the evil as well as the good - or maybe he is so involved in 'seeing' the world and other people's feelings that he has lost his own.
8. "Doctor Feelgood" was recorded by which group?

Answer: Motley Crue

I found three different songs with the same name: Aretha Franklin's begins, "I don't want nobody, always Sittin' around me and my man...".
Johnny Kidd and The Pirates' tune begins, "Hey, all of you women Don't gather round Unless you weigh Over four hundred pounds...".
Motley Crue's hit begins, "Yeah, yeah Rat-tailed Jimmy he's a second-hand hood, dealin' out in Hollywood..."
9. In the Doobie Brothers' hit "The Doctor", what is the answer to 'the question everybody's always asking me'?

Answer: Music is The Doctor

"I'm a man who lives in the city, I'm a man who lives in the street, From F L A to Frisco Bay, Everywhere in between..." Music is the doctor and the answer.
Loudon Wainwright's 'Doctor' said, "Son you look a lot older than me and I'm 71...Boy your body is a temple not a toy..." His fee for all the bad news he dispensed was $300, if 'Loud' was alive long enough to pay it.
10. There are several different songs named "Doctor Doom". Which group recorded one of them?

Answer: Cage

Cage's album 'Supremacy of Steel' had , "Under the heels of the Baron, My family was hunted like dogs...Doctor Doom is the name that strikes fear in all men...".
The tune is about Doctor Doom who develops his super powers to avenge his family's treatment at the hands of 'The Baron'.
Acacia Strain also had a song with the same title beginning, "Take this job..." and that's about all I can print here.
13th Floor Elevator had a "Dear Doctor Doom, I read your recent letter..."
