Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Good Samaritan" is a famous parable told by Jesus. The story was about a trip from Jerusalem to Jericho. A Jewish man was beaten and robbed and left alongside the road by thieves. Who were the people who passed by the man before he got any help?

Answer: a priest and a Levite

A priest first passed by, then a Levite. Finally, the Samaritan came by. Samaritans and Jews were known to hate one another but, in spite of this, he bound the man's wounds as best he could and took the injured man to an inn to be cared for. He also left two pence to pay for the care. (Luke 10:25-37)
2. This is the story of Jonah. Jonah was a prophet from Galilee and the Lord wanted him to go to Nineveh to preach and tell the residents to repent or else. Jonah didn't like that idea and decided to go by boat to Tarshish. Many people know that Jonah ended up in the belly of a fish or whale, but how did he get there?

Answer: the crew of the boat threw Jonah overboard

The crew questioned Jonah about the storm and what he had done that brought bad luck. He admitted he had gone against the Lord's wishes and told the crew to throw him overboard, where he was swallowed by a whale. After three days, the whale spat Jonah out on shore and he went to Nineveh. He delivered the words and warnings and the people repented and were saved. (Jonah 1:1-4:11)
3. "Daniel in the Lions' Den" is a story told to children in Sunday school. Daniel was a successful young man who was envied. His enemies asked the king to sign a decree that eventually landed Daniel in the lion's den. We're told that the king thought highly of Daniel, so what did the king do while Daniel faced the lions?

Answer: he didn't eat or sleep and went early the next morning to see if Daniel was okay

King Darius was concerned for Daniel and went to the den early the next day. He had the stone moved and called to Daniel. Daniel spoke to the king and explained that an angel of God had closed the mouths of the lions. Daniel was removed from the den and the enemies that caused him to be there were put in the den. Darius made another decree that Daniel's God should be feared as he was the living God. (Daniel 6:1-28)
4. The story of David and Goliath is told over and over and not just in a religious context. You may call this a story of right versus might. Goliath was a nine-foot giant fighting on the side of the Philistines against God's chosen, the Israelites. Goliath called out the Israelites for 40 days. David, who had come to feed his brothers in the Israelite army, took on Goliath's challenge. He approached Goliath with a slingshot and stones. Where did he hit Goliath to kill him?

Answer: struck him in the forehead

David believed that God was on his side and on the side of the Israelites. This emboldened him and with his first stone he hit Goliath in the forehead. He then cut off Goliath's head. King Saul was so impressed with David that he insisted that David live with him. This led to another story that didn't end well for the king. (1 Samuel 17:1-58)
5. "Noah's Ark" is another story often shared with children in Sunday school. God decided that the earth and everything on it was corrupt and needed to be cleansed. Noah and his three sons and their wives were the exception along with a male and female of all the types of animals. God gave Noah instructions and dimensions for an ark and, after it was built and loaded, God told Noah it would rain for 40 days and 40 nights. What happened immediately after 40 days of rain?

Answer: the wind blew and the rain stopped

The ark didn't actually hit dry land (mountains of Ararat) until seven months later. After ten months, the tops of the mountains were seen. More time passed and Noah sent birds to find dry land. When a dove didn't return, Noah waited another week before disembarking. God told Noah and his family to replenish the earth and promised not to flood it again. Noah lived to the ripe old age of 950. (Genesis 6:1-9:29)
6. The Internet Movie Database lists 17 stories entitled 'Samson and Delilah', dating back to 1902. Needless to say, this is a very popular story from the Bible. God gave Samson extraordinary strength, and in exchange, he had to live a very pure life dedicated to God. His downfall was Delilah, who was offered money to find the root of his strength. She asked, he lied, she'd try, he'd defeat, and it would start all over again. Which of the following did she NOT try as a way to weaken Samson?

Answer: dyed his hair with henna

Once the hair was removed from his head, he wasn't able to defeat the men Delilah had waiting for him. They beat him and carried him off to be blinded and bound and he spent his time grinding in prison. During a celebration, he was brought before the people at the temple of Dagon.

His hair had started to grow back and he felt his strength return. He pulled down a couple of pillars and the temple fell, killing many Philistines and Samson. (Judges 16:1-31)
7. "...and the walls came tumbling down." Bring a story to mind? God gave instructions to Joshua on how to bring down the walls of Jericho. Joshua followed the instructions exactly, and on the seventh day, lo and behold, the walls toppled over. What did NOT happen after that?

Answer: the city was rebuilt by righteous people

God told Joshua to walk around the walls of the city each day for six days. On the seventh day, seven priests with ram horn trumpets were to walk around seven times, blowing the horns. The people outside the walls were instructed not to make any sound until told to shout at the top of their lungs.

When they did, the walls fell, just as God said. Rahab had housed a couple of spies so she and her family were spared. All other living things were killed with swords and everything except silver, gold, brass and iron was burned. Joshua told everyone who remained that the Lord would curse them if they rebuilt any part of the city. (Joshua 6:1-27)
8. This story is about King Nebuchadnezzar, who had a golden image made and decreed that everyone should bow to it whenever they heard music. Three men, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, did not fall down and worship the golden image. The king had those men thrown into a fiery furnace. What did the king see when he looked in the furnace?

Answer: he saw four men, one being "the son of God"

The king had some of his army take Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to the furnace, which was so hot, it consumed the mighty army men. The three men had predicted that God would protect them from the fire, and he did. When the king looked, he saw those men and a fourth man that he perceived to be "the son of God" (King James Version).

The king decreed that no one should say anything bad about the God that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego worshipped or the king would have them cut into pieces. (Daniel 3:1-30)
9. Jesus and his disciples were travelling from Jerusalem to Galilee. On the trip, he went through Samaria. While the disciples went off to buy food, Jesus sat by a well and asked a Samaritan woman for water. She was surprised since he was a Jew and Jews and Samaritans didn't associate with each other. They talked for a while and she said she knew the Messiah was coming. Jesus told the woman some things that convinced her she was talking to the Messiah. What was NOT said to the woman in the King James Version?

Answer: 'You need to pray to me for forgiveness'

The woman at the well had been given an opportunity to confess her sins and had been forgiven and offered the water of life. She felt much better about herself and her life. She went into town and told the men there that she had met a prophet. They came to the well to talk with Jesus and asked him to stay. Jesus continued to Galilee after two days. (John 4:1-43)
10. The prodigal son is another of Jesus' parables. It was the story of the younger of two brothers who asked his father for his inheritance. He took the money and left home. After his money ran out, he had to get a job to be able to feed himself. The only job he could find was as a swineherd. Why was that job so distasteful?

Answer: he was Jewish and should not touch pigs

He knew he had hit rock bottom when he had to care for unclean pigs just to exist. All the way home, he thought of how he would apologize but when he got home, he was fawned over by his father. He was dressed and given food. When the older brother came in from working in the fields, he was angry.

His father explained that it was as if his younger son had been dead and had been brought back to life and that was a reason for celebration. (Luke 15:11-32)
