Heading out from their tenth Pit Stop at a Swiss lodge in the city of Zermatt, teams were told to make their way by train to the airport in Zurich to catch a flight thousands of miles to the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. All four teams arrived in this South American city in the morning and needed to take a taxi to a tram station. Here, taking a tram to Santa Teresa, teams found their next task at Escadaria Selarón, a staircase covered in large, coloured tiles. Each team needed to locate one tile with their Route Info logo depicted on the front, and their clue would be on the back.

Answer: Varanasi

Commencing Leg 7, the remaining seven teams opened their clues at the sixth Pit Stop, the Fountain of Joy in Kolkata, India, and were told to fly themselves from their present city all the way to Varanasi, one of the holiest cities of the country resting on the Sacred River, the Ganges. Heading to their respective travel agents and ticket counters, six of the teams boarded the same flight arriving the following day in East India while Jet and Cord ended up hopping on a plane leaving later but with less connections. They showed up nearly an hour later.

In Broken Hill, Australia, teams found their Detour task waiting in the Australian Outback's Living Desert. Here, they chose either 'Spirit World', in which they needed to craft a stone mosaic using an example for reference then dance upon it to receive their next clue, or they needed to complete 'Natural World' in which they had to create a painting using water and clay which they spit from their mouths. Every one of the eleven teams completed 'Spirit World'. For being the last team to find a paper airplane in the first leg of the race, Amanda and Kris were also forced to complete the other side of the Detour task. They were eventually eliminated in this leg, unable to overcome their penalty.

Before beginning Leg 3, teams headed out from their second Pit Stop in Broken Hill, Australia and took a train ride through the Australian Outback back to Sydney. They opened their clues at the train station and were told to fly themselves over five thousand miles to the city of Tokyo, Japan. Teams split onto two different flights, one of which ended up being delayed en route. When they arrived they had to make their way to a Shibuya parking garage where they would be able to receive their next clue and a car needed to get around Japan. Once they received their car from the rotating device used to hold them, they could drive off.

Because the previous 'All-Stars' season was season 11 (during which Eric and Danielle won) "The Amazing Race 18 (Unfinished Business)" only featured teams of two from season 12 onwards. The only season not to have any teams return was season 13 (one of the shorter seasons, and one of the ones with the most dominating teams). There were, however, five teams from "The Amazing Race 14" on the roster. All eleven teams participating were eliminated from their races under unique circumstances; some lost to bad cab rides, some lost their passports, and some simply missed the million in the last moments. Regardless, they all came back to try again.

Continuing from Escadaria Selarón, teams needed to take a taxi to Largo de São Francisco de Paula. Here, one member of each team needed to complete a Road Block in which they dressed in ceremonial garb and learned samba dance steps. Then, once they got the hang of the movements, they had to lead a group around the square and receive the approval of a judge to receive their next clue. This task was completed by Zev, Kisha, Mallory, and Big Easy, all of whom were required to do so as per the race rules (as all racers needed to have five Road Blocks completed by the final leg). After this, teams were told to take a taxi to the Copacabana.

Arriving in Schaanwald, teams found a Road Block clue instructing one member to hop onto a motorized bike and ride it across Liechtenstein, a distance of twenty-two kilometers from their starting point to their finishing point, using nothing more than a map for guidance. Justin, Flight Time, Jen, Jet, Vyxsin, and Gary all took a ride through this small region and made their way to the end where they were told to write the distance on their odometer on the back of a postcard before heading to their teammates waiting in the Castle Gutenberg. Racers not correctly guessing the amount would be forced to drive back to the start and try again.

Arriving in Varanasi, teams were told to take taxis to their next destination, a Tonga stand located in the city proper. Here, teams located the Road Block for this leg of the race requiring that one member use five pictures to find five different sadhus in the city streets. These men would give them five different pieces of paper that would spell out a 'meaning of life' that they would need to recite to receive their next clue. This answer was 'once you're over the hill, you pick up speed'. Kent, Big Easy, Jen, Gary, Ron, Justin, and Cord completed this task before receiving their next clue.

Answer: Twelve

Making their way to exceedingly high altitudes in Lijiang, China, teams found the Road Block at Jade Dragon Mountain's Spruce Meadow. Here, one member of each team needed to search through thousands of pendants for twelve depicting different animals of the Zodiac. When they had all twelve they needed to arrange them in order on a wicker mobile to receive their clue. Luke, Cord, Cara, Mallory, Big Easy, Jen, Zev, Christina, and Vyxsin ended up completing this one by recalling the twelve signs and properly placing them before heading back to the Old Town of Lijiang for another Zodiac-themed task.

Answer: 'Frog of Luck'

In Japan, teams completed one of two tasks in the Mt. Fuji area. In 'Prayer of Purity' (completed by Flight Time and Big Easy and Ron and Christina), teams needed to go to a forested area and perform two rituals before standing under a freezing cold waterfall from the glaciers of Mt. Fuji for a minute to receive their clue. The other teams chose 'Frog of Luck' in which they had to search a muddy pit for a plastic frog hidden inside (while locals pelted them with mud). During the latter task, Mel and Mike had to wait with paramedics for their temperatures to return to normal allowing last place team Jaime and Cara to catch up and overtake them.

Answer: Solar water heating systems

Arriving at the flower market, teams found their Detour task for this leg of the race including the 'Honor the Past' and 'Embrace the Future' options. In 'Honor the Past', teams needed to go to a cultural center to watch a performance by locals dressed in traditional garb. Without taking notes, teams needed to place dolls matching the outfits in the order that each one appeared on stage. Once teams completely placed the fifteen dolls they collected their clues. Zev and Justin, Ron and Christina, Jen and Kisha, and Gary and Mallory finished this one. In 'Embrace the Future', teams needed to go to an office building, carry solar water heating devices to the roof, and construct them to receive their next clue. Margie and Luke, Jet and Cord, Kynt and Vyxsin, Jaime and Cara, and Flight Time and Big Easy finished this one.

After retrieving their cars, teams were instructed to drive out of Tokyo to the city of Kamakura where they would be able to locate their next clue box outside the Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū Shrine, specifically at the doors of the Yabusame Dojo. Here, teams found the Road Block task and one member of each pair was required to dress in traditional garb before being taught meditative stances. When they perfected these to the approval of a sensei, they would need to shoot an arrow atop a spinning mount through a piece of wood to receive their next clue. Team members stepping up for this task included Ron, Gary, Flight Time, Jen, Justin, Kent, Mike, Luke, Cord, and Jaime.

In the beginning of "The Amazing Race 18", the eleven teams made their way to the starting line at the San Gorgonio Pass Wind Farm in Palm Springs, California, one of the U.S.'s windiest places. Here, teams were informed that (like in "The Amazing Race 17") the first team to check in at the first Pit Stop would receive the ever-helpful Express Pass which would allow them to skip one task of their choice at any point in the race. In addition, however, the last team to finish the first task upon departing from the starting line would be penalized with an automatic U-Turn to be held during the first Detour. They say second chances don't come for free.

Arriving at a building at the Copacabana, teams were required to find a clue box at a waxing studio inside. Here, both members were required to participate in a fifteen minute Brazilian waxing session before they could continue on with their next clue. This proved to be a more harrowing ordeal for Zev and Justin, both of whom were hairier than most. Justin, in particular, asked if punching out the attendant would result in a time penalty. After this task, teams were asked to choose one of two Detour choices on Copacabana Beach.

After the Road Block, teams were told to take another train, this time to the city of Zermatt, Switzerland, where they would be able to collect their next clue outside the city's railway station. This would be the leg's Detour task requiring that teams choose either 'Cheese' or 'Wheeze'. In 'Cheese', teams traveled to a local restaurant and were told to eat a full, hot pot of cheese fondue before they would collect their next clue inside a new fondue pot. Only Zev and Justin forced their way through this filling task. Everyone else chose 'Wheeze' in which they needed to collect and deliver twenty pieces of luggage found in the train station to (at least) five different hotels in the city (on foot). When they returned their receipts they would be able to receive their clue.

Answer: Flight Time and Big Easy

Departing from the Tonga stand, teams were told to make their way through the crowded streets of Varanasi by tuk-tuk to Swaminath Akhara, a weight-training area for strongmen, in Tulsi Ghat. Here, teams located the Detour. In one of these options, 'Feed the Buffalo', teams needed to travel by boat across the Ganges River to locate a hut containing bundles of hay. These bundles needed to be carried back over the river and through the narrow alleyways of Varanasi where teams needed to deliver them to the addresses marked on their bundle ropes. Flight Time and Big Easy, Zev and Justin, Jet and Cord, and Ron and Christina completed this task.

In Kunming, China, teams made their way to the Stone Forest to complete a Road Block task. This one involved large bone pieces and the rather interesting twenty-foot skeleton of a dilophosaurus. Teams needed to use a diagram to properly assemble this dinosaur and receive their next clue. Kisha, Christina, Margie, Kent, Jet, Jaime, Big Easy, and Justin ended up attempting this one. Gary opted to complete the task, but when he and Mallory realized how many people were already completing the task, they utilized their Express Pass and skipped the task.

Answer: Ron and Christina

Heading out from the Road Block, teams needed to drive themselves to Daiyūzan Station in Minamiashigara where their next clue would be waiting at the foot of a statue of Kintaro. This was the Detour for this leg of the race. In this task, two teams selected the 'Prayer of Purity' option in which they had to drive toward the base of Mt. Fuji, Japan's tallest mountain, to locate a Shinto ritual being held in the woods. After performing two customs, teams needed to stand under a freezing, cold waterfall fed by the melting snows atop Mount Fuji for one minute before they could receive their clue. Only Flight Time and Big Easy and Ron and Christina did this one.

Answer: QANTAS

When teams were told "go", they needed to search the nearby fields for one of twelve paper airplanes (amongst thousands) all bearing the names of different international airlines. If teams could locate one bearing the name 'Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services' (abbreviated to the Australian airline, QANTAS) and return it to Phil, he would hand them tickets for their flight to Sydney, Australia and their first clue. The first eight teams would take an earlier flight while the last three teams would arrive an hour and a half later (and the last team would be U-Turned). In a turn of fate, the leading plane ended up landing in Hawaii due to a medical emergency and they were delayed nearly two hours.

Answer: 'On the Rocks'

In this Detour task, teams were told to choose either 'On the Rocks' or 'On the Beach'. In 'On the Rock', which was chosen by all four teams, they had to head to a beach-side bar and properly create one hundred mixed drinks known as Caipirinhas. If any of these were incorrectly made, they would be thrown out. In 'On the Beach', teams needed to take an umbrella, portable changing room, and several bikinis, and sell enough to beach-goers to accumulate sixty reals. They also had to have their customers model the outfit. Although Zev and Justin attempted this task, they switched soon after.

Answer: Animal dung

In the 'Feed the Fire' Detour option, Jen and Kisha, Gary and Mallory, and Kent and Vyxsin needed to travel to a riverside house and create a total of fifty dung patties by shaping and drying them on a wall with their hands. Once these fifty were made to dry to the satisfaction of the homeowner, they needed to start a fire using matches and a patty of cow dung fuel and warm a pot of milk in order to receive their next clue.

Answer: Papaya and mango

In Leg 6, teams started in Kunming, China with a quick tea-tasting. Upon arriving at Kolkata's Town Hall, one member of each team needed to recall the papaya/mango flavour experienced the day before to locate one cup of tea (amongst hundreds) and present it to a guru for their clue. Ron, Jet, Kisha, Kent, Mallory, Zev, Flight Time, and Luke all went for this one with Ron and Jet using their sense of smell to locate the right one. For some players, this task took four hours of trial and error. After the task, teams received a bottle of Snapple with their next destination on the inside of the cap.

Answer: Two

In Kunming, China, teams chose either 'Honor the Past' or 'Embrace the Future' for their Detour. In the former, teams watched a local play and needed to memorize the appearances of fifteen different people onstage. Then, in another room (without recording their answers) they needed to correctly place dolls representing the figures in the correct order to get their clue. Zev and Justin, Ron and Christina, Jen and Kisha, and Gary and Mallory finished this. In 'Embrace the Future', teams needed to go to a local building to transport and construct solar water heaters on the roof to get their clue. The remaining teams did this. After the Detour, teams found the race's first Double U-Turn at the Yunnan Province Cultural Center. Kent and Vyxsin used it to U-Turn Jaime and Cara forcing Jaime and Cara to use theirs on Flight Time and Big Easy. Both teams returned to complete the 'Honor the Past' Detour option.

Answer: Zev and Justin

After their Detour task, teams were told to make their way to their final Pit Stop located on the beach beneath the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum. Gary and Mallory were the first to hit the mat and they ended up winning a Mediterranean cruise vacation courtesy of Travelocity. This was their third win of the race (their second on a beach). In the end it was Zev and Justin, this race's most victorious team (with four first place victories), who were the last to arrive having stumbled at the Road Block and Detour tasks. They became the eighth and final eliminated team.

Teams found the Pit Stop waiting at Moos Restaurant in Zermatt overlooking the Swiss Alps. Zev and Justin were the first team to arrive at this Pit Stop (for a second consecutive leg) taking their fourth win of the race. For this leg they won themselves a trip for two to Curacao courtesy of Travelocity (who else?). As the other teams checked in, it was Jet and Cord, who faltered at the Road Block and were tasked with completing a second Detour task, who arrived in last place. They became the sixth team eliminated from the race.

After the Detour task, teams needed to make their way by any means necessary to the seventh Pit Stop of the race depicted in a picture in their clue envelopes. This led them to a specific entrance of the Ramnagar Fort in Varanasi. Flight Time and Big Easy became the first team to arrive claiming their first win of this race. They received a trip for two to Hawaii from Travelocity for their win. In the end it was Ron and Christina who ended up landing on the mat in last place as they not only fell behind due to Ron's confusion during the Road Block, but also decided to take the water taxi to the Pit Stop costing them precious time. They became the fifth team eliminated from the race.

Arriving at a tonga stand in the holy city of Varanasi, India, teams found a Road Block task during which members needed to travel through the city streets identifying five holy men from photos. When they approached these men they would be given slips of paper which, when arrange properly, would give them a 'meaning of life' which could be traded for a clue (the phrase was "Once you're over the hill you pick up speed.") Kent, Big Easy, Jen, Gary, Ron, Justin, and Cord did this task. Ron's involvement may have been the fatal mistake for the team; they were unable to recover from his getting lost along the Ganges.

Jet and Cord ended up breezing through the Road Block and took a taxi to a first place victory in this leg, showing up on the mat at Green Lake Park. They won $5,000 each for their victory. Gary and Mallory, who used the Express Pass and departed from the Road Block before them, ended up placing second while Kynt and Vyxsin, who had their penalty, ended up hitting the mat in fifth. In the end of the episode it was Jaime and Cara who, while they made up the time after their U-Turn, were unable to overcome the Road Block task and fell back to the bottom of the pack. They became the third eliminated team.

After the Detour, teams were told to make their way to the third Pit Stop of the race, the Commodore Perry Monument in Yokosuka, Japan. Zev and Justin were the first team to make it to the Pit Stop for a second consecutive win. They ended up claiming a trip for two to Costa Rica (courtesy of Travelocity) for their prize. Although Jaime and Cara trailed throughout the leg because of an earlier altercation involving their car (hitting another car) it was Mel and Mike who were unable to complete the Detour due to the intense cold and fatigue. They showed up at the Pit Stop to become the second team eliminated.

After taking a ride on a 16ft skiff to receive a clue from a buoy in the nearby bay, teams ended up racing on foot to the next Pit Stop at Shelly Beach in Manly. Gary and Mallory ended up being the first to land on the mat after leading through most of the leg (upon landing in Sydney, of course) and they were able to claim the powerful Express Pass mechanic. Phil had more news, though; they were still racing. Leg 2 began right then and there with a clue telling them that they would be heading to the outback. As teams continued to arrive and immediately depart, it was Jet and Cord who were last to arrive (having missed a ferry and taken too long to figure out the Road Block). They were spared from elimination, though.
