Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To which country did teams fly in Leg 3 of the race?

Answer: Japan

Before beginning Leg 3, teams headed out from their second Pit Stop in Broken Hill, Australia and took a train ride through the Australian Outback back to Sydney. They opened their clues at the train station and were told to fly themselves over five thousand miles to the city of Tokyo, Japan. Teams split onto two different flights, one of which ended up being delayed en route.

When they arrived they had to make their way to a Shibuya parking garage where they would be able to receive their next clue and a car needed to get around Japan. Once they received their car from the rotating device used to hold them, they could drive off.
2. Which team member completed the archery Road Block task in Leg 3?

Answer: Kent

After retrieving their cars, teams were instructed to drive out of Tokyo to the city of Kamakura where they would be able to locate their next clue box outside the Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū Shrine, specifically at the doors of the Yabusame Dojo. Here, teams found the Road Block task and one member of each pair was required to dress in traditional garb before being taught meditative stances.

When they perfected these to the approval of a sensei, they would need to shoot an arrow atop a spinning mount through a piece of wood to receive their next clue. Team members stepping up for this task included Ron, Gary, Flight Time, Jen, Justin, Kent, Mike, Luke, Cord, and Jaime.
3. The 'Prayer of Purity' Detour task in Leg 3 was only completed by two teams: Flight Time and Big Easy and which other duo?

Answer: Ron and Christina

Heading out from the Road Block, teams needed to drive themselves to Daiyūzan Station in Minamiashigara where their next clue would be waiting at the foot of a statue of Kintaro. This was the Detour for this leg of the race. In this task, two teams selected the 'Prayer of Purity' option in which they had to drive toward the base of Mt. Fuji, Japan's tallest mountain, to locate a Shinto ritual being held in the woods.

After performing two customs, teams needed to stand under a freezing, cold waterfall fed by the melting snows atop Mount Fuji for one minute before they could receive their clue. Only Flight Time and Big Easy and Ron and Christina did this one.
4. In the 'Frog of Luck' Detour option in Leg 3, teams needed to find a plastic frog in which of these locations?

Answer: A muddy pit

For 'Frog of Luck', teams drove themselves to another location containing a cold, muddy pit. Donning traditional outfits, teams needed to search the mud for one of a number of plastic frogs while locals threw mud at them. Once they found a single lucky amphibian in the dirty surroundings they would be able to receive their next clue from an overseer. Zev and Justin, Gary and Mallory, Kisha and Jen, Margie and Luke, Jet and Cord, Kent and Vyxsin, Mel and Mike, and Jaime and Cara all end up getting dirty for this one.
5. Which team was eliminated in Leg 3?

Answer: Mel and Mike

After the Detour, teams were told to make their way to the third Pit Stop of the race, the Commodore Perry Monument in Yokosuka, Japan. Zev and Justin were the first team to make it to the Pit Stop for a second consecutive win. They ended up claiming a trip for two to Costa Rica (courtesy of Travelocity) for their prize.

Although Jaime and Cara trailed throughout the leg because of an earlier altercation involving their car (hitting another car) it was Mel and Mike who were unable to complete the Detour due to the intense cold and fatigue.

They showed up at the Pit Stop to become the second team eliminated.
6. Which team missed the mandatory flight to Kunming, China in Leg 4?

Answer: Kent and Vyxsin

Departing from the third Pit Stop of the race in Yokosuka, Japan, teams were told that their next clue would be waiting for them nearly six thousand miles away in the city of Lijiang, China at the base of Jade Dragon Mountain. To get there, teams would need to take a mandatory flight from Narita Airport in Tokyo, Japan, then arrange for a connection in Kunming.

Although all nine remaining teams had ample time to make it from the Pit Stop to the airport in Tokyo, Kent and Vyxsin got helplessly lost on the Japanese roads and highway and ended up traveling in the other direction.

They were forced to take an alternate flight, missing their mandatory ride and putting themselves hours behind the other teams.
7. All teams but one made their way from Kunming to Lijiang, China (in Leg 4) via which mode of transportation?

Answer: Train

Arriving in Kunming, teams needed to make their way to Jade Dragon Mountain in Lijiang, China but to do so they either needed to fly there in the morning or take one of two late trains. Ron and Christina quickly secured a lead on the other teams by taking the earliest train while seven other teams took the second and Kent and Vyxsin took the flight.

The eight leading teams reconvened on a bus ride to the mountain while Kent and Vyxsin narrowed the gap. At the mountain, teams found a clue box and one member was told to ride a yak across the Baishui River to collect their next clue.
8. During the Road Block task in China in Leg 4, team members needed to collect charms depicting which of these?

Answer: Symbols of the Chinese Zodiac

After riding their yaks, teams were forced to ascend (via gondola) to a height of nearly three miles above sea level (is there even air up there?). Arriving at the Spruce Meadow, teams located the Road Block clue box informing them that they'd need to choose a member who lives a charmed life. For this task, the selected member needed to collect pendants depicting the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac from amongst thousands of wooden charms hanging on the walkways around them and then bring them to a gazebo where they would need to hang them in the order in which they actually occur. Luke, Cord, Cara, Mallory, Big Easy, Jen, Zev, Christina, and Vyxsin did this one before heading back to the Old City of Lijiang.
9. In the 'Hammer' Detour task in Leg 4, what did teams need to hammer?

Answer: Candy

Arriving in Old Town Lijiang, teams needed to find a zodiac prayer wheel, write a wish on a piece of paper and insert it into the sign corresponding to their year of birth to receive their Detour clue. This was a choice between 'Hammer' and 'Horn'. In 'Hammer', teams needed to locate a candy shop in the narrow streets of Lijiang and take turn using large mallets to pound the candy to the proper consistency.

When done to the approval of a confectioner and cut into pieces, teams would receive their next clue.

In 'Horn', teams needed to carry a ceremonial horn and lead dancers through the city to Wencheng Palace to get their next clue. Only Flight Time and Big Easy chose the latter task while everyone else completed 'Hammer'.
10. Which team was first to arrive at the fourth Pit Stop in China (in Leg 4)?

Answer: Margie and Luke

In the end of Leg 4, teams were told to make their way on foot through the streets of Lijiang to the fourth Pit Stop of the race, the Eternal Tower. Here, Phil greeted Margie and Luke first informing them that they had won themselves a trip for two to Aruba (courtesy of Travelocity, as usual) for their victory. Unfortunately though, they were still racing.

This leg was not over quite yet. All of the racers checked in soon after and Kent and Vyxsin never made up the time lost by their poor flight. For taking the non-mandatory plane, they were told that they would be penalized thirty minutes upon check-in at the next Pit Stop.
