Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this season of the race, eleven teams from previous seasons returned for a second chance at the million dollars. Which season did not have a team representing it?

Answer: Season 13

Because the previous 'All-Stars' season was season 11 (during which Eric and Danielle won) "The Amazing Race 18 (Unfinished Business)" only featured teams of two from season 12 onwards. The only season not to have any teams return was season 13 (one of the shorter seasons, and one of the ones with the most dominating teams).

There were, however, five teams from "The Amazing Race 14" on the roster. All eleven teams participating were eliminated from their races under unique circumstances; some lost to bad cab rides, some lost their passports, and some simply missed the million in the last moments. Regardless, they all came back to try again.
2. From which state did teams commence the eighteenth "Amazing Race"?

Answer: California

In the beginning of "The Amazing Race 18", the eleven teams made their way to the starting line at the San Gorgonio Pass Wind Farm in Palm Springs, California, one of the U.S.'s windiest places. Here, teams were informed that (like in "The Amazing Race 17") the first team to check in at the first Pit Stop would receive the ever-helpful Express Pass which would allow them to skip one task of their choice at any point in the race.

In addition, however, the last team to finish the first task upon departing from the starting line would be penalized with an automatic U-Turn to be held during the first Detour.

They say second chances don't come for free.
3. At the starting line, teams needed to locate a paper airplane bearing the name of what major Australian airline?

Answer: QANTAS

When teams were told "go", they needed to search the nearby fields for one of twelve paper airplanes (amongst thousands) all bearing the names of different international airlines. If teams could locate one bearing the name 'Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services' (abbreviated to the Australian airline, QANTAS) and return it to Phil, he would hand them tickets for their flight to Sydney, Australia and their first clue.

The first eight teams would take an earlier flight while the last three teams would arrive an hour and a half later (and the last team would be U-Turned).

In a turn of fate, the leading plane ended up landing in Hawaii due to a medical emergency and they were delayed nearly two hours.
4. During the first Road Block task (in Sydney, Australia) in Leg 1, teams needed do find which of these in a shark tank?

Answer: Compass

Upon landing in Sydney, teams needed to hop onto a train to the Circular Quay, then take a ferry across the bay to Manly where they would find their clue box at Oceanworld. This would be the race's first Road Block task in which one member needed to don scuba gear and enter a shark tank. Once inside, they needed to find a large compass on the tank floor and bring it back to the side of the building to solve a puzzle involving nautical flags and a decoder found on their retrieved item. Once teams translated, MANLY SKIFF SAILING CLUB, FIND THE COMMODORE, TELL HIM 'I AM BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA', they would be able to follow this direction and get their next clue from said individual. Mallory, Amanda, Kisha, Margie, Flight Time, Vyxsin, Justin, Cara, Mel, Christina, and Jet completed this one.
5. Which team won the Express Pass by placing first at the race's first Pit Stop in Australia?

Answer: Gary and Mallory

After taking a ride on a 16ft skiff to receive a clue from a buoy in the nearby bay, teams ended up racing on foot to the next Pit Stop at Shelly Beach in Manly. Gary and Mallory ended up being the first to land on the mat after leading through most of the leg (upon landing in Sydney, of course) and they were able to claim the powerful Express Pass mechanic. Phil had more news, though; they were still racing. Leg 2 began right then and there with a clue telling them that they would be heading to the outback.

As teams continued to arrive and immediately depart, it was Jet and Cord who were last to arrive (having missed a ferry and taken too long to figure out the Road Block). They were spared from elimination, though.
6. In Leg 2, teams needed to fly to the Australian Outback. Which city was their destination?

Answer: Broken Hill

Continuing from the first Pit Stop of the race, teams were told to search through Sydney for 'To Sail To Stop', a sculpture standing outside Sydney Town Hall (although teams did not know this last bit of info). Here, they were required to sign up for one of two flights departing the next morning for Broken Hill, Australia in the Australian Outback. Finding this statue proved difficult for many teams who resorted to searching for internet access rather than asking cabbies and locals. Jet and Cord, who arrived at the Pit Stop in last, searched on until the middle of the night.

The next morning, teams flew out arriving a half hour apart from one another.
7. Which Detour task was completed by all eleven teams in Australia in Leg 2?

Answer: 'Spirit World'

Landing in Broken Hill, teams found a clue waiting on their vehicles sending them to the Painted Desert just outside the city. Here, teams located the Detour tasks, 'Spirit World' and 'Natural World'. 'Spirit World' was completed by all eleven teams almost simultaneously. For this task, both members needed to use natural materials to make a ground mosaic in a formation given in an example. Once they finished the mosaic, they would need to dance on it to receive their next clue.

Many teams had trouble figuring out the dancing part, but they all carried on anyways. No one initially chose the 'Natural World' task.
8. Which team was U-Turned during Leg 2 and had to complete both Detour options?

Answer: Amanda and Kris

Because they were the last team to find the proper paper airplane at the race's starting line, Amanda and Kris received the automatic U-Turn and were told to complete the other Detour task in Leg 2, 'Natural World'. For this task, they needed to create a traditional painting using stencils and natural paint that they spit from their mouths.

Although none of the teams initially chose this task, Amanda and Kris were forced to complete it to carry on with the race (though they claimed that it was quicker than the first one). After the Detour, teams traveled into Broken Hill to find the 'Home of the Magpies', the Central Football Club.
9. While dressed up as kangaroos, teams needed to locate an intersection with streets named after mercury and what other chemical element?

Answer: Bismuth

Arriving at the Central Football Stadium in Broken Hill, teams received a clue containing the periodic table and two coloured elements (Mercury and Bismuth). They then needed to determine that many of Broken Hill's streets are named after elements, but only two intersect- the two highlighted for them. Teams needed to locate their cluebox at this location while dressed up in kangaroo outfits complete with bouncing shoes before they could continue.

The periodic tables, of course, only listed the chemical symbols and not their names.
10. Which team was eliminated from the race in Australia in Leg 2 (being the first to be eliminated)?

Answer: Amanda and Kris

After the kangaroo/element task, teams were told to hop into their vehicles and drive to the next Pit Stop, the Junction Mine in Broken Hill, wearing their kangaroo outfits (without the shoes). Here, Zev and Justin took the lead and won themselves a trip for two to Cancun courtesy of Travelocity. Teams would also have their mandatory rest period, the first in a few days.

In the end it was Amanda and Kris who found themselves arriving in eleventh and last place. After the U-Turn they nearly caught up but they ended up eliminated.
