This happened in season 1,episode 2: "The Harvest". Although it is obvious that either The Master, Luke or Darla killed Jesse (Eric Balfour) and turned him into a vampire, that death happens offscreen so we'll never know "Who done it" for sure. Jesse met his onscreen demise in the Bronze. Technically Xander was just threatening him with the stake and Jesse was accidentally knocked into it by a girl who was running away. Originally, Joss Whedon had wanted to include Eric Balfour in the opening credits to shock the audience and show that he wasn't afraid to kill a main character, but it proved to be too costly for the show's fledgling budget. Eric Balfour has been seen most recently as a recurring character on "The OC".
