Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is the only breed of dog allowed to participate in retriever hunt tests and field trials that is *not* a retriever?

Answer: Irish Water Spaniel

The Irish Water Spaniel doesn't look like other Spaniels. It is the size of a retriever and has a very curly coat with a long 'rat' tail and a topknot. It is liver in color.
2. This russet-colored dog is a native of Hungary.

Answer: Vizsla

These dogs have short, smooth hair with no undercoat. There are vizslas available as a wire-coated or even long-haired version, but these are much rarer.
3. This retriever, which originated in England, has black or liver as the only two allowable colors in the show ring.

Answer: Flat-coated retriever

The flat-coat is known as the 'Peter Pan of the dog world'. It is a friendly, intelligent and VERY active dog!
4. This group of dogs, which contains the smallest members of the AKC Sporting Group, was originally bred to find and flush birds for hunters, then to retrieve the downed birds.

Answer: Spaniels

Pointers pointed out birds which the hunter then flushed. Setters function much as pointers do. Retrievers retrieve downed game.
5. This German breed is also known as the 'grey ghost'.

Answer: Weimaraner

The Weimaraner is the only breed of dog required to have this gray coat.
6. This French breed, although often called a 'spaniel', works as a versatile hunting dog.

Answer: Brittany

It isn't a spaniel, although it resembles one in some ways.
7. This breed is the heaviest and most massive of the setters.

Answer: Gordon setter

The Gordon is also more placid.
8. This breed, the smallest of the listed spaniels, rarely works today.

Answer: American cocker spaniel

Some cockers still work, but most are from 'show lines' or are pets.
9. This breed is the most popular dog breed in the world.

Answer: Labrador retriever

Unfortunately, this hasn't been good for Labradors. Popularity brings poor breeding and overpopulation.
10. Which of the following is not a sporting breed?

Answer: Cavalier King Charles spaniel

It's a toy breed.
