Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In England place effigy in carbon fir embers.

Answer: Bonfire

...car(BON FIR E)mbers.

Bonfires are lit on the fifth of November around England to commemorate the foiling of the plot to blow up Parliament in 1605. The person burnt in effigy is Guy Fawkes, the plotter who was caught red-handed.
2. Was that an astronaut? Um, no, just a seasonal leftover from October.

Answer: Autumn

...astron(AUT UM, N)o...

In the northern hemisphere, November is nearing the end of autumn (also called fall) although some days might feel rather wintry. The reference to October implies that someone has been seen still wearing their Hallowe'en astronaut costume.
3. There is no way for it to be too early for this, at least in northern climes.

Answer: Snow

...i(S NO W)ay...

Snow in November is relatively common in Canada and northern parts of the USA, although it usually does not stay on the ground for long when it falls in that month.
4. Protocol does not allow discussion of the temperature in Canada.

Answer: Cold

Proto(COL D)oes...

That sentence is rubbish, of course, as Canadians freely discuss the temperature and other aspects of the weather. November is one of those months that can go from pleasantly mild to painfully cold overnight, and back again.
5. Where did all assemble to see the president in 1963?

Answer: Dallas

...di(D ALL AS)semble...

Anyone who is old enough to remember 22nd November 1963 can tell you exactly where they were and what they were doing when they heard that President John F. Kennedy had been shot in Dallas. Theories about the perpetrator(s) of the crime persist into the 21st century.
6. Mother turns red in nervous anticipation of Thanksgiving guests.

Answer: Dinner

...re(D IN NER)vous...

Thanksgiving dinner most often consists of turkey, cranberry sauce, potatoes (or sweet potatoes), gravy, stuffing and more. American Thanksgiving is on a Thursday in November, while Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving in October, on the second Monday of that month.
7. Youngish O.P.P. in Goderich patrols mall at this time of year.

Answer: Shopping

Youngi(SH O.P.P. IN G)oderich...

Christmas shopping in the US (and to some extent in Canada) takes off in a big way on Black Friday, the day after American Thanksgiving, with in-store sales abounding.

O.P.P. are the Ontario Provincial Police, who most likely won't be patrolling malls, in Goderich or elsewhere on that day.
8. All the trees are bare on Little Ave. South in this small New England town.

Answer: Leaves

...Litt(LE AVE S)outh...

By mid-November, the pretty autumn leaves have mostly been blown off the trees in the northern United States and most of Canada.
9. Don't rave, lest security delays your departure

Answer: Travel

Don'(T RAVE L)est...

November is a time for travelling home for Thanksgiving in the US, and possibly also for students heading off for a midterm break in other countries as well.
10. Old soldiers often are members of wreath-laying groups.

Answer: Remember

...a(RE MEMBER)s...

Whether you know it as Remembrance Day, Veterans' Day or Armistice Day, the 11th of November is a time to stop and reflect on the sacrifices made over the years by members of the armed forces.
