Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Adam had a son called Seth, another son who was murdered and another marked out for infamy?

Answer: Adam in the Bible

The Columbia Encyclopaedia states: "Adam,[Heb.,=man], in the Bible, is the first man. In the Book of Genesis, God creates humankind in his image as a species of male and female, giving them dominion over other life. Elsewhere in Genesis, however, Adam is the personal name of the first man for whom the created order is then fashioned. From his body, Eve is made to be his helper and partner.

After the Fall, i.e., their disobedience, they are expelled from the Garden of Eden." Paradise Lost only follows the action until the fall of man. Adam and Eve have their children after their expulsion. Seth is the least well known of their children. Hunter Cain murdered shepherd Abel out of jealousy and hence bore 'the mark of Cain'.
2. Which Adam had a brother Seth, who loved Dinah, who eventually married Adam? Adam had loved Hetty, who loved Arthur for his wealth and position. Hetty was transported through her love.

Answer: Adam Bede in the George Eliot novel

The story of Adam Bede is really the story of Hetty Sorrel, an innocent on the make. She thinks that land-owner Arthur Donnithorne will marry her, has an illegitimate child by him which she kills and is transported for life. Adam Bede finds solace with worthy Dinah Morris.
3. Which Adam worked for Judith and her sons Seth and Reuben? He is the aged farm-hand who milks the cows Graceless, Pointless, Feckless and Aimless. Flora soon sorts out all their troubles.

Answer: Adam Lambsbreath in "Cold Comfort Farm" (Stella Gibbons)

Stella Gibbons had fun with this sent up of the novels of Mary Webb and that ilk. She invented a wonderful dialect for her country characters. Adam says of fey Elphine Starkadder "She's away ... wanderin' far from those that loves her and cowdled her in their bosoms when she was a mommet. She'll break my heart into liddle sippets, so she will."
4. Which Adam worked for farmer Robin, aka Ruthven, who loved Rose Maybud? Robin tried to escape a peculiar destiny.

Answer: Adam Goodheart in "Ruddigore" (Gilbert & Sullivan)

The Baronets of Ruddigore have been cursed. Each Baronet, as they succeed to the title, must commit a crime a day or die in torture. To escape his fate, the latest Baronet, Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd, disguises himself as Robin Oakapple, a farmer. Only two people know his identity - his faithful servant, Old Adam Goodheart, and his foster brother, Richard Dauntless, a seaman. Robin Oakapple is in love with the beautiful Rose Maybud and wants to marry her - but his plans appear doomed when his identity is revealed.

It all works out in true Gilbertian style.
5. Which Adam served one brother called Oliver, who mistreated his younger brother, Orlando. He left his home to follow Orlando into a forest exile, appropriate for a family named 'de Bois'

Answer: Adam in "As You Like It"

Old Adam gives his life's savings to help Orlando and dies exhausted in exile in the Forest of Arden. "As you like it" actually takes place in France in the Ardennes, not the English Arden. Shakespeare probably liked the name Arden as his mother's maiden name was Mary Arden.
6. Which Adam is in love with Nina but would rather go to the dentist than make love?

Answer: Adam Fenwick-Symes in "Vile Bodies" (Evelyn Waugh)

Adam Fenwick-Symes and Nina Blount actually have sex in this daring novel for it's time but don't enjoy the experience. "Vile bodies" was recently made into a very good and funny film, "Bright Young Things", directed by Stephen Fry.
7. Which Adam married Jenny but loved Julia, and speculated that Wellington would beat Napoleon?

Answer: Adam Deveril, Viscount Lynton from "A Civil Contract "(Georgette Heyer)

Captain Adam Deveril is forced to sell out to look after his estates, before Waterloo. To save his inheritance from debt he marries merchant's daughter Jenny Chawleigh, whilst still loving aristocratic Julia Oversley. This novel is the story of Adam's realisation that he has made a good bargain, for Jenny is good and true though plain and Julia is a whimsical pain in the neck. An exciting part of the tale is when Adam successfully speculates in Goverment stocks, against advice from his merchant father-in-law, that Wellington will succeed at Waterloo.

The merchant and aristocratic are well contrasted and for once the merchant class is sympathetically portrayed.
8. Which Adam and his friend Rufus decide on a summer in England at Adam's country house. Zosie, Shiva and Vivien soon join them and it proves an explosive mixture. Years later a body is found and the summer happenings are re-examined.

Answer: Adam Verne-Smith in "A Fatal Inversion" (Barbara Vine)

After Adam inherits a country house from his great uncle, he and his friend Rufus Fletcher decide to spend the summer there. Ten years afterwards, the bodies of a young woman and a young child are discovered in the woods behind the house. As the police investigate, they naturally look to Adam as the former owner of the house, and what happened all those years before starts to catch up with him. Ruth Rendell as Barbara Vine writes a dark and gripping tale.
9. Which Adam was not understood by young ladies (according to Mr Brooke) and who thought "virtue was more to be feared than vice"?

Answer: Adam Smith author of the "Wealth of Nations"

From George Eliot's Middlemarch,"'Young ladies don't understand political economy, you know,' said Mr Brooke, smiling towards Mr Casaubon. 'I remember when we were all reading Adam Smith. There is a book, now. I took in all the new ideas at one time - human perfectibility, now.'"
Adam Smith (1723-1790) said tellingly,"Virtue is more to be feared than vice, because its excesses are not subject to the regulation of conscience."
10. Which Adam married Milly, who had to put up with his younger brothers (Gideon, Dan and Ben to name but three). They took a tip from the Sabines' fate in the politest possible way.

Answer: Adam Pontipee in "Seven brides for Seven brothers"

It all takes place in the 1850s Oregon wilderness: The brothers are the Pontipees, orphan farm boys. Urged on by his six younger brothers, Adam, the eldest, goes to town in search of a bride. He meets Milly who works in the town restaurant, and, after a whirlwind courtship, the two wed. Milly discovers that she has married into a pack of overaged adolescents, all of whom expect her to provide food and do their laundry. She sets out to turn them into eligible bachelors, with the idea of marrying them off quickly.
Adam complicates things by convincing his brothers to find their own sweethearts when her method fails. The Pontipee brothers go into town having read about "the Rape of the Sabine women" and abduct the six women they love, carrying them back to their mountain homestead. But an avalanche closes the pass behind them. Milly spends the winter chaperoning them until the spring thaw when the preacher is able to reach them to carry out the multiple wedding.
Robert Adam was famous along with his brothers John, William and James. The were themselves nicknamed the Adelphi (Greek for brothers) after their famous project.

Cal is frustrated at every turn: from his reaction to the war, to how to get ahead in business and in life, to how to relate to estranged mother. James Dean gave a famous performance as Cal in the film of the book.

The show features the conflict between the two corporations, Blake's Denver Carrington and Alexis' ColbyCo and the characters' complicated personal lives.
14. Which Adam was married to Amanda? They soon find themselves opposed in the courtroom.

Answer: Adam Bonner in "Adam's Rib"

"Adam's Rib" features Adam Bonner (Spencer Tracy) and Amanda Bonner (Katharine Hepburn). Adam and Amanda Bonner are married lawyers who find themselves on opposite sides of the courtroom. Adam is prosecuting a high-profile case in which a woman is accused of trying to murder her unfaithful husband. Amanda acts as her defense attorney, and their sparring begins. This is a witty and wonderful film.
15. Which Adam is a poet and a commander whose first wife died in childbed and whose latest love is Cambridge academic Emma?

Answer: Adam Dalgleish in the PD James novels

P.D. James novels are more than detective stories. They have great psychological insight. Police Commander Adam Dalgleish is a marvellous creation. He has been played mostly by Roy Marsden in the television adaptions of the novels and in the latest by Martin Shaw. The last two novels "Death in Holy Orders" and "The Murder Room" are two of the best mystery stories ever written, to stand alongside Dorothy Sayers and her Lord Peter Wimsey novels.
In the latest novels Adam gets together with academic Emma Lavenham.
