Answer: Curious George

Curious George was created by the husband and wife team of Hans Augusto Rey and Margret Rey. The first story to include what became George was "Cecily G. and the Nine Monkeys" (1939) where the monkey character was variously referred to as Rafi, Raffy, and Cecily in various language editions.

The first book that included George was the self-titled "Curious George" in 1941. In the various books, George's companion is usually referred to as the Man in the Yellow Hat.
