Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
Dorothy Gale who is, arguably, the most famous of the characters in this set, sprang from the fertile imagination of US author L. Frank Baum and she features in a number of his "Oz" series of stories. The first of these was "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" (1900). The character has proven to be popular in so many mediums and she can be found on stage, in films, television shows and even in video games such as "Wizard 101" (2008), where she is a non-playing character.
Dorothy "Doll" Tearsheet, on the other hand, is as far removed from Dorothy Gale as can be. Unlike the innocent Gale, Doll is a prostitute who appears in William Shakespeare's "Henry IV Part 2" (1600). She is blessed with a colourful array of insults, is a regular at the Boar's Head Inn and is a close associate of the tavern's proprietor, Mistress Quickly.
Dorothy "Dot" Branning (also known as Dot Cotton), played by June Brown, is a chain-smoking hypochondriac who appeared on the BBC soap opera "EastEnders" (1985-93). She made her first appearance in 1985 with her son Nick Cotton, a notorious criminal, which is cleverly played off against her devout Christianity. The character left in 1993 because June Brown was not happy with the way her storyline was being developed, however, she returned in 1997 and remained until her exit in 2020.
"Mobile Suit Gundam Wing", which is a Japanese anime that ran from 1995 to 1996, introduced us to Dorothy Catalonia. Catalonia initially appears as an ordinary student at the Sanc Kingdom school, who professes a love for warfare, claiming it is an essential part of humanity. In truth, she has been sent to the school to spy on one of the protagonists, Relena Peacecraft, heir to the pacificist Kingdom of Sanc, and she has a strong distaste for war and her father's actions.
Dorothy (the) Dinosaur was the first character introduced by the children's musical group The Wiggles in 1991. Despite being green with yellow spots and having big scary teeth, she is docile and loves the colour pink. This may stem from the fact that she is a "rososaurus" who lives in a pink house, eats roses and loves to dance the ballet.
Between 1987 and 1989 Sophie Aldred appeared as "Ace" McShane, a character in the long-running BBC series "Dr. Who". She proved to be one of the Doctor's most popular companions, serving alongside the regenerating Time Lord during his seventh incarnation (played by Sylvester McCoy). Whilst her family name is not mentioned in the television show she is listed as Dorothy McShane, and even Dorothy Gale, in other spin-off media.
"Tootsie" is a 1982 satirical comedy that stars Dustin Hoffman as a talented actor who is difficult to deal with. The difficulty stems from his striving for perfection and, as a consequence, no one in New York is now prepared to hire him. Desperate for an acting job he impersonates a woman, named Dorothy Michaels, to try and win a female role, but his perfectionism is such that he is too convincing as a woman, and he finds himself fending off romantic approaches from other men.
Dot Starlight is a doll from the "Lalaloopsy Land" range, which was launched in 2010 as "Bitty Buttons". Dot is dark-skinned with blond hair and pink cheeks and is a dreamer and a star gazer. She is one of the few in the set that possesses a real-life name. As an example, she was released at the same time as Pillows, Crumbs, Mittens and Peanuts and shares her birthday (July 20) with Star Magic Spells, Whirly Stretchy Locks and Bouncer Fluffy Tail.
Buford Tune, a cartoonist, created Dottie Dripple in 1944 and the comic strip was distributed by the Publisher's Syndicate. You could not really call Dottie an original character as she was almost a replica of "Blondie", from "Dagwood and Blondie" fame, created by Chic Young in 1930. However, Dottie made people laugh and this may well be the reason she survived and remained in syndication for almost 25 years.
Dorothy Zbornak is an extremely sarcastic woman (Rose: "Can I ask a dumb question?" Dorothy: "Better than anyone else") who is portrayed by Bea Arthur in the television series "The Golden Girls" (1985-92). Dorothy has been recently divorced from her husband Stanley and now rents a room at the house of her friend Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan). Others sharing the house include Dorothy's mother, Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty) and Rose Nyland (Betty White). The highly-rated show ran for seven seasons.
