Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Part of the hype that surrounded "Heat" was the fact that Al Pacino and Robert De Niro were in the same movie for the first time in a long time. Before "Heat", what was the last movie in which De Niro and Pacino both appeared?

Answer: "The Godfather: Part II" (1974)

While the two greats spent less than ten minutes together onscreen in this movie, they spend no time together on their last movie: "The Godfather: Part II" (1974). The reason for this is that De Niro was cast as a young Vito Corleone (appearing in flashbacks) but Pacino was cast as his son Michael approximately thirty years later.
2. Amy Brenneman did not want to play the role of Eady, De Niro's character's girlfriend, as she thought the movie was "filled with blood and had no morality". Ironically, in what TV show did Amy play a cop who has no trouble shooting an underworld boss whilst she was off-duty?

Answer: "NYPD Blue" (1993)

In what was somewhat of a breakthrough role, Amy was cast as Officer Janice Licalsi, opposite David Caruso, in the first two seasons of "NYPD Blue" (1993). "Heat" was probably her biggest movie role before regular TV show appearances on "Judging Amy" (1999) and "Private Practice" (2007).
3. Val Kilmer plays Chris Shiherlis, one of Neil's McCauley's (De Niro) gang. Kilmer was filming a "Batman" movie at the same time as "Heat". Which one?

Answer: "Batman Forever"

Val Kilmer took over as Batman from Michael Keaton whose had played in the first two movies, "Batman" (1989) and "Batman Returns" (1993). Kilmer was himself replaced by George Clooney in "Batman and Robin" (1997).

*SPOILERS* Shiherlis was the "lucky" one who escaped jail/death but it cost him a life together with his wife and child.
4. Val Kilmer's character, Chris Shiherlis, is married to Charlene. It is a tumultuous relationship but Shiherlis tells McCauley, "For me the sun rises and sets with her, man." Which actress, better known for her role opposite Tommy Lee Jones in "Double Jeopardy" or Morgan Freeman in "Kiss the Girls" (2002), plays Charlene?

Answer: Ashley Judd

Ashley Judd had a small but acclaimed role in "Heat" She became better known as Carla in "Time to Kill" but had star billing in "Kiss the Girls"(2002) as Dr Clair McTiernan" and as Libby in "Double Jeopardy" (1999). The other actresses were all Academy Award nominees around the same era: Hilary Swank won Best Actress for "Boys Don't Cry" (1999), Toni Collette was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in "The Sixth Sense" (1999), and Kristin Scott Thomas was nominated as Best Actress in "The English Patient" (1996).
5. Tom Sizemore played Michael Cheritto as one of the thieves in "Heat". A critically acclaimed actor, he played a bigger role alongside Tom Hanks in what 1998 movie?

Answer: "Saving Private Ryan"

While Sizemore specialises in playing tough guys such as Sgt Horvarth in "Saving Private Ryan", you saw a more "human" size of Sizemore in "Heat", perhaps his most accomplished role.
Tom Hanks starred in all four movies listed ("Band of Brothers" was a TV mini-series) and while Sizemore only appeared in one of them with Hanks, Barry Pepper appeared in two ("The Green Mile"(1999) and "Saving Private Ryan" (1998)).
6. Mykelti Williamson played Sgt Drucker, a tough but fair cop in "Heat". Perhaps his greatest role was in a TV series in 2002-3 where he played another detective, "Fearless" Smith, in the same city in which "Heat" was shot. What was the name of the TV series (which is a nickname for the city the series in which the series is set)?

Answer: Boomtown

Mykelti Williamson is well known to TV audiences in "CSI: NY" (2005) and "24" (2007). He runs the risk of being typecast as he has appeared on cop shows such as "Starsky and Hutch" (1975) and " Hill Street Blues" (1981). Arguably, his most remembered role was playing "Bubba" opposite Tom Hanks (again!) in Forrest Gump" (1994).
7. Diane Venora is probably the least known of all the top-billed stars of "Heat". However this did not stop her getting top female billing in "The Insider" (1999) playing Russell Crowe's character's wife. What was the name of the TV show where she played Dr Geri Infante in 1994/5 about the same time she was filming "Heat"?

Answer: "Chicago Hope"

Diane Venora played Vincent Hanna's (Pacino) wife and has had a long history of stage acting in particularly "Hamlet" where she has played Ophelia with Kevin Kline, Gertrude with Ethan Hawke and even Hamlet himself.
Her "breakout" movie role was in "Bird" (1988) playing Charlie Parker's wife, Chan. From this role she was nominated for a Golden Globe.
8. After her movie debut playing the female lead (aged 11) in "Leon, The Professional" (1994), this actress was playing only her second movie role but went onto play in blockbusters such as the "Star Wars" prequels and picked up an Academy Award for best actress in "Black Swan" (2010). Who is this actress?

Answer: Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman's third film was the critic's delight, "Beautiful Girls" before she went onto the "Star Wars" prequels (1999, 2002, 2005). In between these there were three critically acclaimed movies, "Anywhere But Here"(1999),"Where the Heart Is" (2000), and "Closer" (2004). She received her first Oscar nomination for the latter movie.
9. In "Heat", a key role is Nate who is the go-between between the crooks and the underworld. Jon Voight was quietly brilliant in the role of Nate. In a subsequent role, despite third billing in a 1998 spy thriller, Voight arguably outclassed the stars of the movie, Will Smith and Gene Hackman. What was the name of this movie?

Answer: "Enemy of the State"

In "Enemy of the State", Voight plays a cold, scheming, murderous, bureaucrat. Before these two roles, Voight's most memorable roles were in "Midnight Cowboy"(1969), "Deliverance" (1972) and "Coming Home"(1978). In the latter movie he won an Oscar for Best Actor.
10. In "Heat", Richard Torena, a confidential informant, plays a small but crucial role in the movie. He was played by an accomplished actor but this person was known more for his talent as a singer. Who was he?

Answer: Tone Loc

Tone Loc has appeared in over 20 movies including "The Adventures of Ford Fairlane" (1990) (admittedly as a rapper) and "Ace Ventura, Pet Detective" (1994). As a singer we won an award (Favorite Dance New Artist) on the American Music Awards in 1990. His most popular song is "Funky Cold Medina" (1990).
