Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Razz is dealt like which other poker game?

Answer: 7 Card Stud

Razz is a variant of 7 card stud and is dealt the same way - two cards face down, four cards face up, one card face down. The only time this may vary is if a full ring game (8 players) is taking place and all players stay in until the last card. In this instance 56 cards would be needed and there are only 52 cards in a deck. If this happens the dealer deals the last card face up and all players share it as a community card much like Texas Hold'em.

This is the only instance in which a community card is used in Razz.
2. In Razz does the suit of the cards matter in determining the winner of a hand?

Answer: No

Suits are not used in Razz except to determine who has the bring in bet if more than one player has the same door card. The bring in bet is the first forced bet after the initial three cards are dealt. Each player is dealt two cards face down and one card face up.

The face up card is considered a players door card. If two players have the same ranking door card, like nines, then the standard suit ranks apply, spades on top followed by hearts, diamonds, and finally clubs. The player with the highest ranking door card is forced to make the bring in bet.

Otherwise, suits are ignored in Razz and flushes do not count, only the card ranks matter.
3. In Razz if a straight is made does it count as a high hand like in other forms of poker or is it ignored and of no consequence?

Answer: It is ignored and of no consequence

Straights are the same as flushes and have no bearing on the game of Razz. The only thing that matters is the rank or value of the card not the sequential order of the cards. There is a variant of Razz played mostly in Europe called London Lowball where flushes and straights do play and are considered high hands but in standard Razz they do not.

Although flushes and straights do not count, pairs and trips still do. In this case either of these make it harder to get a strong low hand.
4. Does the Ace play as a high card, low card, both or neither in Razz?

Answer: Low card

Razz is basically a form of lowball poker so the ace is never high. This is typical of most lowball games except 2 to 7 lowball where the ace is high and never low. In typical poker the ace is high unless it is being used to make a wheel, a straight of A2345.

In high/low games the ace plays on both ends and can be used to form both the high and the low in the same hand. In this case the wheel is a very strong hand because it plays both high and low.
5. What is the highest ranking Razz hand? (Remember in Razz you are looking for the worst possible hand, not the best possible hand.)

Answer: A2345

The best hand in Razz is what is traditionally known as the wheel, a straight of A2345, but in this case the straight aspect of the hand is ignored. In a game like 2 to 7 lowball a straight does matter so the best hand is 23457 where one card is skipped to keep a straight from being formed.

In Razz, the A2345 is the nuts. From there it works up with A2346 being the second nuts and so on.
6. How many cards are used to determine the best hand in a game of Razz?

Answer: Five

As is true in most forms of poker it is the five best cards in a player's hand that are used to form their hand. In some games community cards are shared, like Texas Hold'em or Omaha, but it is still the five best cards a player can form that count as their hand.

Although five cards are used to form the technical hand, many times players say they have 7-8 or 6-9 so as to differentiate their highest two cards that are determinative in knowing who wins. This type of terminology is quite common both at the table and in written analysis.
7. One of the great stories involving Razz concerns the legendary Vegas gambler Archie Karas. Karas beat which poker legend and only player to ever win outright 3 WSOP Main Event titles in a heads up match of Razz for $500,000? (This player's nickname was The Kid.)

Answer: Stu Ungar

Archie Karas' story is one of the greatest gambling stories to come out of Vegas. He came to Las Vegas with $50 in his pocket and ran that up to over $7,000,000 in a matter of months. He started by playing Razz then moved on to other forms of gambling. Once he had the $7,000,000 he set up a heads up table at Binion's Horseshoe Casino and challenged the best poker players to play him heads up.

The first to accept the challenge was Stu Ungar. Karas took Ungar for $500,000 playing Razz. They then played 7 card stud and Karas won another $700,000. During his run Karas beat other monsters of the game including Doyle Brunson and Chip Reese.

The only player to beat him during this time was Johnny Chan, who won $900,000 from Karas. Karas eventually ran his bankroll up over $17,000,000 before he lost it all playing craps.
8. Below are four Razz hands. Which one is the winner?

Answer: 7h2d3d6s8c

Although I have given you the suits here, they are irrelevant. The lowest hand here and the winner is the 72368 which would read as 23678 for a 7-8 low. The second best hand would be the A5239 for a 5-9 low. Next would be the Q2345 for a 5-Q. Finally the highest hand would be the 67K2A for a 7-K.
9. Here is another four Razz hands, again identify the winner.

Answer: Ac3c4c8cTc

Although the Ac3c4c8cTc is a flush, the flush does not matter in Razz. This is the lowest hand and therefore the winner. It would read as A348T for an 8-T low. The next best hand is the Jh2c5d6s7d for a 7-J low. Although the 7 is lower than the 8 of the winning hand, it is the highest card in each hand that determines the winner. In this case the T (ten) is lower than the J (jack).
10. Now let's look at four 7 card hands. Which one is the winner in a Razz game?

Answer: 3h8h8d3s2c4s5c

Here you have to determine the five best cards in each hand. In this case the 3h8h8d3s2c4s5c would have 23458 as the five best cards for a 5-8 low. Although there is a double pair in this hand, the doubles can be dropped off leaving you with an extremely strong Razz hand. The second best hand would be the 8c9hKcKdJd6s7h which would have 6789J as the five best cards for a 9-J low.
