Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Lintons relocate from London to the Tyrol because of Mrs Linton's health. With what disease is she suffering?

Answer: Tuberculosis

Mrs Linton is referred to the Sanatorium at the Sonnalpe by her specialist, Dr James Talbot, who is a friend of Jem Russell. The Sanatorium specialises in tuberculosis cases and Dr Talbot thinks that the mountain climate will be good for Mrs Linton's health, and that she should send her daughters to the Chalet School as it is nearby, and a good school at that. Gillian, the older of the two girls, is more aware of the severity of her mother's illness than her little sister Joyce, and acts as Mrs Linton's carer.

The Lintons travel across Europe with a nurse, but have to go slowly and have rest stops because of Mrs Linton's illness.
2. When Gillian and Joyce go to stay with the Russells at the Sonnalpe, Joey takes a liking to Gillian, but dislikes Joyce. Which of these things does Joyce NOT do to irritate Joey?

Answer: She complains about Rosa's cooking.

Madge invites the Lintons to stay with her until term starts while their mother is in the Sanatorium, and sends Joey and Dr Jack Maynard to pick them up. Joey is not impressed with Joyce's behaviour. Stacie Benson is living with the Russells and is in a wheelchair, and Joyce tactlessly asks her how she injured herself, to Joey's annoyance.

She also uses slang and complains about being tired, and when the Robin goes to everyone for a goodnight kiss, Joyce just says, "Oh, night-night, kid." Madge does tell Joey off for taking an instant dislike to people who won't fall down before the Robin, and is more lenient towards Joyce as she suspects Joyce is just very immature.
3. For what offence do Joyce, Thekla von Stift and Kitty Burnett all get into trouble with the prefects?

Answer: Passing notes during prep

It doesn't take long for Joyce to start causing trouble. While Gillian settles in, Joyce takes a liking to Thekla von Stift, who is older than her. Joey takes a prep session with Lower Fifth and Cornelia Flower spills ink all over herself, and Joey also suspects notes were being passed and warns the other prefects to keep an eye out. Simone later catches Kitty, Thekla and Joyce passing notes, and both Joyce and Thekla are rude to her. Marie is embarrassed, as Thekla is a distant cousin of hers, and Joey is furious with Kitty as she's been at the school long enough to know better.

She tells the three girls off and explains to Joyce that passing notes is considered to be underhanded behaviour in the Chalet School, especially as Joyce did it because she didn't want to get caught talking.
4. Joyce and a group of other girls plan a midnight feast, and buy various items of food on a shopping trip in preparation. Which unusual item of food does Thekla contribute?

Answer: Raw smoked bacon

Joyce is surprised that there has never been a midnight feast in the Chalet School. Hilda Bhaer reckons they never have them because the food is so good, but Joyce pushes for one and she and the other girls buy items including bananas, sardines, tinned spaghetti and condensed milk.

They hold a midnight feast in a small sewing room and Thekla produces raw smoked bacon, though she is the only one who eats it. Unfortunately, it goes horribly wrong when Joyce gets food poisoning and is violently sick, Thekla wakes up her dormitory, and the other girls are sick too and Matron has to give them castor oil. One of them, Luise Rotheim, feels guilty and turns herself in to Miss Annersley, who summons all the perpetrators except Joyce and Mary Shaw, both of whom are too ill to come.

She scolds them for their greed, bans them from eating sweet foods and stops their pocket money.
5. The teachers put on a 'Mrs Jarley's Waxworks' show for the staff evening and dress up as various historical figures, and sing a song making fun of various things the girls have done. Which of these does NOT get a mention?

Answer: Grizel Cochrane getting 'holy water' and 'hot water' mixed up

Ms Wilson plays the role of Mrs Jarley and the other staff are her waxworks of both famous people and fictional characters. Mr Denny is Chopin, his sister is Garibaldi, Miss Annersley is Empress Maria Theresa, Miss Stewart is Bonny Prince Charlie, Matron is Florence Nightingale, Miss Nalder is Queen Victoria, Herr Helfen (a music teacher) is Joey's hero Napoleon, Mlle Lepattre is La France, Miss Norman is Aladdin, Miss Edwards is Shockheaded Peter, Herr Anserl is Andreas Hofer, and two unnamed teachers are Charlotte Corday and Joan of Arc.

The other incidents mentioned in the song are the Middles' attempt to mend a clock by boiling it, Joey and friends putting powder in bath water that makes it fizz, and the Middles dressing up as Indians and causing trouble at Oberammergau.
6. The school introduces domestic science lessons, taught by Frau Mieders, and she teaches the Middles to make rechauffe and apple pies. What does Cornelia Flower (accidentally) use as flavouring for some of the apple pies?

Answer: Garlic cloves

Frau Mieders takes the Lower Fifth for cooking and the food they make will be given to the entire school for lunch. The girls make réchauffé - which is actually a way of using up leftovers - and apple pies for pudding, as well as cakes, and Joyce suggests flavouring the pies with cinnamon and cloves. Half of the pies are flavoured with cinnamon, and Cornelia gets cloves to flavour the other half - but unfortunately, she gets the garlic kind, not the spice! At lunch, Mary Shaw wonders why the pies smell so oniony, and Cornelia takes a bite and runs out. Joey and other girls follow suit, and Frau Mieders realises that Cornelia has used garlic cloves when she tries some of Joey's pie. Luckily, there are enough cinnamon-flavoured pies to go round, as well as plum cake.
7. Madge Russell gives birth to a baby girl, and Jem invites Joey and her friends to think of names for the baby. What name is chosen in the end?

Answer: Sybil

Joey goes to Die Rosen to visit Madge and Jem tells her that she has a new niece. Joey is shocked to discover that the baby has red hair (funnily enough, so will her triplet daughters, several books later). She and the other girls staying in the area for half-term are invited to a naming party for the new baby. Jane is Cornelia's idea as she likes plain names, having an unusual full name herself (Cornelia Naida Anastasia Flower). Esmeralda is Ruth Wynyard's idea, and Rosalind is Violet Allison's.

Other suggestions include Anstice (Joyce), Honora (Biddy O'Ryan) and Otillie (Maria Marani). Joey pours scorn on all suggestions. Her own idea is Malvina. David, Jem's son, comes up with the bright idea of calling the baby 'Wufie' after Rufus the dog! Jem ultimately decides to go for none of the names and calls the new baby Sybil.
8. Which teacher do a group of girls, led by Joyce, decide to 'rag' by singing the national anthem in class and dressing up as 'savages'?

Answer: Miss Norman

Miss Norman is giving Joyce, Thekla and a few other younger girls extra language tuition. Although she is used to dealing with little kids, she has trouble controlling older girls, and Joyce immediately latches onto this. Joey catches them loudly singing the national anthem in class, but is unable to intervene as she doesn't want to undermine Miss Norman's authority. What none of the girls know is that Miss Norman is taking on the extra work to help pay for her younger brother's education. Miss Norman finally has enough after Joyce and the other girls - with the exception of Thekla, who thinks it's beneath her - dress up as 'savages', paint their faces and do war dances.

She brings in Mlle Lepattre, who punishes the girls harshly by putting them on silence, relegating them to lower forms and making them eat at the punishment table and go to bed early.

Thekla doesn't get off either, as Frieda catches her in another form room with a banned book and orders her to report herself.
9. St Scholastika's team up with the Chalet School for the Fairy Tale Sale. Which character does Hilary Burn play?

Answer: The Peri

Several sales over the course of the series have a theme, and the theme in this one is fairy tales. The stalls are shaped to look like buildings such as Rapunzel's tower or a fairytale cottage - Joey falls on Miss Wilson and nearly crushes her while putting up a chimney - and most of the girls dress up as fairies or characters from fairy tales. Joey is Snowdrop's prince (Gillian is Snowdrop, or Snow White as we know her), Louise Redfield is the Beast from 'Beauty and the Beast', and Gypsy Carson of St Scholastika's is Bluebeard. Hilary is the Peri, a winged Persian spirit, and presides over the Magic Cave, along with classmates Nancy Wilmot and Ida Reaveley.

When it's Joey's turn to go in, she trips over her sword and falls over. Frieda's uncle, a bishop, opens the sale and has a fun time going round all the stalls.
10. True or false: Joyce is expelled at the end of the book.

Answer: False

It's Thekla who's expelled, not Joyce! Gillian is worried that Joyce will be expelled after the Miss Norman incident, so Joey gives Joyce a pep talk. Thekla is jealous of their friendship and gets Joyce out of bed after curfew, telling her to stay away from Joey. Cornelia catches them and wakes Miss Wilson, who summons them all to her study the next day.

Thekla tries to lie her way out of it, but Cornelia reports that she saw Thekla acting in a threatening manner towards Joyce, and Joyce confirms it.

Thekla admits that she was trying to get Joyce into trouble to get at Joey, and as she shows no remorse, Mlle Lepattre expels her. Some time later, Mrs Linton has a breakdown and becomes delirious when she thinks Joyce has been expelled, and Joey and the Lintons have to convince her that it isn't true and Joyce is still at the school. Joyce also begins to turn over a new leaf and change her behaviour.
