Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A half-giant called Rubeus Hagrid takes you to Diagon Alley for the first time. To get there, you go into the courtyard of a pub called the Leaky Cauldron. There, Hagrid taps a certain brick on the courtyard wall three times with his pink umbrella, revealing the entrance to Diagon Alley. As he decides which brick to tap, he mutters instructions to himself. What instructions does he mutter?

Answer: 'Three up... two across

The brick can also be described as being 'Third brick from the left above the dustbin (as in the Prisoner of Azkaban), but this isn't how Hagrid describes it. The pink umbrella contains the pieces of Hagrids wand which was snapped in half when he was expelled from Hogwarts because he was falsely accused of opening the Chamber of Secrets.
2. The first place you go in Diagon Alley is Gringotts bank, where you can withdraw money from your vault and Hagrid can withdraw a top-secret package from Vault No. 713 on Dumbledore's orders. On the second set of doors leading into the bank you notice a poem written. These are the first two lines: Enter, stranger, but take heed Of what awaits the sin of greed, What is the next line?

Answer: For those who take, but do not earn

The full poem is:
'Enter, stranger, but take heed
Of what awaits the sin of greed,
For those who take, but do not earn
Must pay most dearly in their turn
So if you seek beneath our floors
A treasure that was never yours
Thief, you have been warned, beware,
Of finding more than treasure there.'

We later find out that the top-secret package is the Philosopher's Stone.
3. Later, you go to Ollivanders Wand Shop to buy a wand. Mr Ollivander, who remembers every wand he has ever sold, tells you about your parents' wands. Your father's first wand was made of mahogany. What was you mother's first wand made of?

Answer: Willow

Voldemort's wand was made of yew and the other two were wands that Mr Ollivander gave you to try out but they didn't 'choose' you. Your father's wand was also eleven inches long, pliable and excellent for transfiguration and your mother's wand was ten and a quarter inches long, swishy and good for charm work.
4. In your second year at Hogwarts, you go with the Weasley family to buy your school supplies in Diagon Alley. That year, all of the books on your book list except one are written by Gilderoy Lockhart. Who wrote the book that wasn't written by Lockhart?

Answer: Miranda Goshawk

The book was called 'The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 2'. You bought 'The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 1' the year beforehand. All of Lockhart's books are about his heroic exploits, but he didn't actually do any of the deeds featured. Instead, he wrote down other people's stories and then cast memory charms on them.
5. You go to Flourish and Blotts with the Weasleys and while insulting the Weasley's financial condition, Lucius Malfoy slips Tom Riddle's diary into a book of Ginny's. Which book does he slip it into?

Answer: A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration

All the other books were on your book list the year beforehand. The diary is very dangerous, especially when Ginny disregards her father's advice ('Never trust anything that thinks for itself if you can't see where it keeps its brain') and uses it to communicate with Tom Riddle, endangering her life.
6. Next year, you arrive at Diagon Alley via the Knight Bus, having run away from the Dursleys. You are dropped off at the Leaky Cauldron, and are unexpectedly awaited and met by somebody. Who meets you?

Answer: Cornelius Fudge

Fudge, the Minister for Magic is so happy you are safe (it is thought that Sirius Black is after you) that he forgets to reprimand you for using magic in the Muggle world.
7. You are still staying at the Leaky Cauldron. You don't have to do your homework by torchlight at night in case the Dursleys find out anymore. Instead, you do it outside an ice-cream parlour in the sunshine. Who helps you with your homework?

Answer: Florean Fortescue

Florean Fortescue owns the ice-cream parlour, and knows a lot about medieval witch-burnings. You also like him because he gives you free ice-cream every half-hour.
8. You explore Diagon Alley and have to restrain yourself from buying all of the unusual and fascinating objects available there. Which of these games do you have to restrain yourself from buying?

Answer: A solid gold Gobstones set

Other items that tempt you include a perfect moving model of the galaxy and the Firebolt broom. You don't buy any of these items because you would hate to have to ask the Dursleys for money if yours ran out.
9. Towards the end of the summer, Hogwarts students begin pouring into Diagon Alley. You meet Ron and Hermione the day before your return to Hogwarts, but before they came you had talked to other students from your year. Who were they?

Answer: Seamus Finnegan and Dean Thomas

You did see Neville, but didn't actually talk to him as he was being told off by his grandmother for losing his book list. You bumped into Seamus and Dean outside Quality Quidditch Supplies.
10. Later, at the Leaky Cauldron, you meet all of the Weasleys (except Bill and Charlie). Percy has been made Head Boy and greets you pompously. Fred and George imitate him, but Mrs Weasley is not impressed, and tells them that they should be setting a better example to their little sister Ginny. She is disappointed that:

Answer: They have not been made Prefects

Percy's smug response is ' Ginny's got other brothers to set her an example, mum.'
