Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these features are NOT situated around the Hogwarts grounds?

Answer: Orchard

Hogwarts is a big school with big grounds. There is a big lake beside Hogwarts called the Black Lake. First-year students get to Hogwarts across the lake. The Giant Squid also lives there. The Owlery is where the students' owls live. Students practice and play Quidditch matches on the Quidditch pitch.

In "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" the Quidditch pitch is transformed into a maze for the Triwizard Tournament.
2. How many Hogwarts houses are there?

Answer: Four

Students are Sorted into four Hogwarts houses depending on their personalities. The four houses are: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. The Sorting Hat - a talking hat - decides which house students get sorted into. Each house takes classes together and share a common room. Professor McGonagall says in the first book that while at Hogwarts your house is like your family.
3. There are six floors in total at Hogwarts.

Answer: False

There are seven floors at Hogwarts, excluding the ground floor and the dungeons. The moving staircase goes up through all the floors. The Great Hall is located on the ground floor. Teachers' offices and classrooms are all located on different floors.
4. Students eat their meals in the Great Hall. What special feature does the Great Hall have?

Answer: Enchanted ceiling

If you enter the Great Hall and look up to the ceiling you will see the sky outside. There is a ceiling there, but it's enchanted to show the sky outside. That way the students will know what weather it is outside. The Great Hall has four tables, one for each house, and ghosts often show up to talk to students.
5. Where is the Hufflepuff common room located?

Answer: Basement

The Hufflepuff common room is located in the basement around the kitchens, the Gryffindor and Ravenclaw common rooms are located in towers and the Slytherin common room is in the dungeon. Common rooms are places to relax in your spare time. Harry enters all the common rooms except Hufflepuff's. Gryffindor's common room has armchairs and fires in it; Slytherin's common room is under the lake and has green lamps and skulls everywhere; Ravenclaw's common room has a big statue of their founder Rowena Ravenclaw wearing her diadem.
6. Which of these after-school clubs/teams does Hogwarts not have?

Answer: Potion Making Club

Gobstones is a game like marbles. There was a dueling club in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" monitored by Gilderoy Lockhart. Quidditch is a sport constantly played at Hogwarts. We don't have any knowledge about a Potion Making Club, and Professor Snape, the Potions master, doesn't seem like a person who would set one up!
7. What is Hogwarts's motto?

Answer: Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus.

Hogwarts's motto is Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titilandus. It's Latin for "Never Tickle a Sleeping Dragon." It's never said in the book but is on the inside cover under Hogwarts's crest.
8. What type of creatures cook the meals at Hogwarts?

Answer: House-elves

House-elves are little creatures that humans hire to do housework. House-elves don't get paid but they love their job. The only way to free a house-elf is to give it clothes. Helga Hufflepuff is said to have first employed house-elves at Hogwarts. Hermione Granger is very against this idea and says it's slave labour.

She sets up S.P.E.W (the Society for Protection of Elfish Welfare) to help free house-elves. It doesn't get very far because house-elves don't want to be set free.
9. What time does the Hogwarts Express leave King's Cross for Hogwarts?

Answer: 11:00

Students get to Hogwarts on the Hogwarts Express. The Hogwarts Express leaves King's Cross Station at exactly 11 o'clock. When the journey is over, the Hogwarts Express drops the students off at Hogsmeade Station where they take horseless carriages up to school. First-years traditionally take boats up the lake to school.
10. What dangerous tree is outside Hogwarts?

Answer: The Whomping Willow

The Whomping Willow is a tree. Its branches thrash around, grabbing hold of anything in its reach. It was planted when Remus Lupin came to Hogwarts to ensure a passageway to the Shrieking Shack to transform into a werewolf. To stop the branches moving you touch a knot on the tree.
