Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Jack's initial reason for disliking Jane?

Answer: She had to move dormitories because Jane was given her cubicle.

Len Maynard is the Dormitory Prefect of Pansy, Jack's original dormitory. As anyone who's read 'A Leader in the Chalet School' and 'The Chalet School Triplets' will recall, Jack is very clingy towards Len and is constantly bombarding her with questions.

She has to move to Violet and use the cubicle of Meg Walton, who is moving to Alpenrose, as Jane has never been to school before and her mother has asked if she can be with someone who will help her out. Even though Priscilla Dawbarn, the Dormitory Prefect of Violet, points out that Matron is the one who made the arrangements and it isn't Jane's fault, Jack immediately takes a dislike to Jane and when Miss Dene asks her to show Jane around, she is rude to Jane and blames her for having to change dormitories.
2. What does Jane initially have a habit of calling people (much to the teachers' bemusement)?

Answer: Darling

Jane annoys tomboyish Jack even further by calling her 'darling', and Jack accuses her of 'slobbering over her' and being soppy. José Helston worries that Jane's flowery way of speaking has annoyed Jack, though Jean Abbot knows the real reason is because Jack can't be in Len's dormitory anymore. Jane also calls the teachers 'darling', but isn't upset when Miss Ferrars warns her not to. Because she has never been to school, her work is all over the place; her languages (except Latin) and English are excellent, but her maths is poor and her history patchy.

She is in Upper IVb for most subjects but has to do her weaker ones with Jack's form, Lower IVa. Miss Dene explains that Jane had to start school as her governess quit her job and Jane's parents are touring Australia and New Zealand, and Lady Carew decided to send her to the Chalet School after meeting Tom Hay's mother.
3. Jack encourages her friends to gang up on Jane and after Miss Ferrars tells Lower IVa off for not showing Jane where to sit, Jack trips Jane up in a sewing lesson in revenge. Jack is in a constant bad mood, is rude to the prefects and her work suffers. Who catches her bullying Jane in a corridor?

Answer: Len Maynard

Although Jane makes friends in her own form, when she has an algebra lesson with Jack's form, none of the girls show her where to sit and Miss Ferrars is angry with them. Margot Maynard tells Jack off in a games class for not returning Jane's serve, and Mlle de Lachennais orders her to report to her form mistress for rudeness in a needlework class, after which Jack trips Jane and makes her drop her box.

The teachers despair over the poor quality of Jack's work, while the prefects notice her posture is poor and Aimée Robinet is angry with Jack after Jack tells her to 'shut her head'. Len is angry on Aimée's behalf and promises to make Jack apologise.

She takes a shortcut along a corridor reserved for prefects only and hears Jack taunting Jane and calling her a baby. Len sends both girls away and later takes Jack aside and explains Jane's circumstances to her, and tells her to stop bullying Jane. Jack tells the other girls to leave Jane alone, but continues to nurse a grudge towards her.
4. Which is NOT one of the reasons why Va pick Jane to replace Tina Harms as the lead actress in their play, 'The Little Germaine'?

Answer: She is a good dancer.

Tina Harms is originally cast as Germaine, a little French girl who is kidnapped by her father's evil valet and abandoned in Switzerland, in a play written by Priscilla Dawbarn and Eloise Dafflon. Unfortunately, Tina becomes ill and has to drop out of the play.

As a large part of the plot revolves around Germaine's blonde hair and the actress has to be small enough to be carried, Ruey Richardson - the stage manager - suggests Jane as the replacement, as she fits the criteria and is the daughter of actors. Jane is given the script and reads it over on a school trip to Lake Thun, and memorises it quickly.

Not only is she a far better actress than Tina, but she also uses her theatrical knowledge to improve the play; she is hesitant at first but when the girls ask her for advice and what her father would say, Jane tells them to pick up their cues more quickly, and she also leaves little time for pauses when delivering her lines, which the girls pick up.

As a result, the length of the play is cut by twenty minutes. Joey Maynard and Daisy Rosomon go to see the play and although Joey thinks the ending is a bit cheesy, she is impressed at Jane's acting skills, as are the other girls.
5. As is the custom, Joey Maynard invites Jane to tea at Freudesheim, and Jane brings Jose Helston with her as her friend of choice. Which Old Girl and friend of Joey's is also Jose's mother?

Answer: Princess Elisaveta

José is the daughter of Elisaveta Helston, formerly the Crown Princess of Belsornia and a pupil from when the school was at the Tiernsee, and is named after Joey. One thing that she and Jane have in common is famous parents; Jane explains to the other girls on the Lake Thun trip that she prefers to keep it quiet about her parents being actors (her mother actually performs under her maiden name) as she wants people to like her for who she is, and not only be friends with her because of her parents. Jack is irrationally angry that Jane is going to see Joey, even though she knows it's standard procedure for new girls. Jane is impressed with how down-to-earth José is, and how she manages to be confident without being arrogant. José also tells Jane that she doesn't want everyone knowing about her royal background, as she wants to make her own way.
6. Maeve Bettany, the Head Girl, and the Maynard sisters are called to break up a fight between Jane and Jack, which Jack initiated. Why did Jack attack Jane?

Answer: Jane was washing Miss Ferrars' car.

A group of girls in Jack's form come running to tell Maeve about a fight between Jack and Jane, and Maeve finds Jack pulling Jane's hair while Jane tries to defend herself. She breaks it up with the triplets' help. On questioning, Maeve discovers that Miss Ferrars had asked Jane to wash her car as she and Miss Wilmot needed it later - Jane points out that she couldn't refuse a request from a mistress - and Jack accuses Jane of stealing 'her' job, as normally she is the one who gets to wash the car. Jane points out that nobody had told her that Jack usually cleans the car and when Jack refuses to believe her, Len reminds Jack of when her form had accused her of something she hadn't done. Maeve tells Jane off for fighting back, but recognises that Jack started it and tells Miss Ferrars and Miss Wilmot, who have words with Jack.
7. What happens to Jack during a game of hide-and-seek?

Answer: She gets stuck in a pine tree.

There is an outbreak of smallpox in the region, so the girls have to spend half-term at school. Letters must be disinfected and the girls are confined to the school, with the exception of Freudesheim as it is next door. Miss Wilmot and Miss Ferrars take a group of girls on a walk which includes Jack, Jane and the Maynard triplets, and they play hide-and-seek.

When Jack and Jane take longer than expected to return, the party go looking for them. It turns out that Jack is stuck in a pine tree, and Jane hears her and climbs the tree to help her get free from a branch.

She manages to free Jack, although Jack's dress is ripped to bits, but both girls need the help of the staff and older girls to get down. Len runs home to Freudesheim to get spare clothes and towels for them, as both of them are dirty and messed up.
8. What illness does Janice Chester come down with, much to the school's surprise?

Answer: Cowpox

Joey organises a fancy dress contest in which the girls and staff are given the names and outfits of historical figures, and people have to guess who they are. (Jane gets the young Queen Victoria, while Jack dresses up as one of Dr Barnardo's orphans.) When term starts again, Miss Annersley has to cancel the regatta as there are still cases of smallpox. Janice is grumpier than usual and is suffering from flu-like symptoms, and Dr Gordon, a relatively new doctor at the Sanatorium, suspects it might be chickenpox but Peter Chester, a doctor and Janice's father, flies over to give a second opinion.

He diagnoses her with cowpox, a very unusual disease in the area, though luckily it isn't too serious and Janice soon recovers.
9. Miss Annersley and Miss Dene receive some bad news from Australia and urgently get in touch with Jem Russell, who is currently living out there. What has happened to Jane's mother?

Answer: She has been injured in a car crash.

While Miss Annersley is discussing arrangements for the Sale, which has to be organised within a short period, Miss Dene calls her to her office as she has received a cable from Sir William Carew in Australia, saying that Lady Carew has been seriously injured in a car crash.

He does not want Jane to know, but Miss Annersley decides to tell her in order to prepare her for the worst, remembering that as a child, she never found out about the severity of her mother's illness until it was too late. Miss Dene gets in touch with Jem.

Although Miss Annersley does not want the news getting out and has the radios disconnected and the papers hidden, Jack overhears two women talking about the accident during tennis practice and insists on taking Jane to Miss Annersley, saying that she can't tell Jane herself.

She and Joey break the news to Jane, who begs to be allowed to fly out to Australia. Joey comforts Jane while Miss Annersley tells her that she has received a message from Jem, saying Lady Carew is recovering from surgery. Jane stays at Freudesheim and her father phones up the following day with news.

He says that Jane must stay at school for the time being as her mother cannot have visitors, although she is getting better, but that he has been in touch with Madge and she has agreed to let Jane stay with her, and Jane can visit her mother then. Jane is due to fly out with Margot, who is visiting her old friend Emerence Hope.
10. The book ends with a Sale, and Tom Gay's gift this year is a set of houses from different countries, with dolls in national costume. Which country provides the theme for the Sale?

Answer: Spain

The Sale has a Spanish theme, with girls wearing mantillas, combs in their hair and shawls. Although it has been organised in a rush, the girls manage to come up with contests and items for their stalls - Jane's form is doing bric-a-brac - and Tom provides a set of international houses (such as a Chinese pagoda and a Swiss chalet) and dolls to match, made by the children she works with.

The contest is to name the countries the houses belong to, and Joey wins, but donates the houses to the school's geography department. Va and Jane perform 'The Little Germaine'. By this time, Jack and Jane have made up after Jack, feeling guilty about her horrible behaviour earlier and having received a strong telling-off from Miss Annersley after confessing to her, asks Len for advice. Both girls are invited to Freudesheim and at Jack's suggestion, Jane writes to her mother inviting her and her father to come to Switzerland to recover from the accident.
