Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'You're not going anywhere till you've found my badge!' This is said to Ron.

Answer: Percy

This is said by Percy Weasley, Ron Weasley's older brother. In this book, Percy had been changed from a prefect into the Head Boy. With this comes a special badge that Percy enjoys parading around on his shirt wherever possible so that he can be noticed. So, as you can see, Percy would go a little crazy if it were to be lost.

This particular line is said in the chapter of 'The Leaky Cauldron', when the Weasleys, Hermione and Harry are staying at the Leaky Cauldron before they go on the train to Hogwarts. Percy can't find his badge, and since Percy and Ron are sharing a room, he naturally assumed that Ron had stolen it.

However, although it is true that someone had stolen Percy's badge, it wasn't Ron, as he had suspected. In fact, it had been stolen by Fred and George who were 'improving it': they had changed it so that it actually read 'Bighead Boy'.
2. 'Don't you say "yes" in that ungrateful tone,' Now, who would say this to Harry?

Answer: Aunt Marge

This quote pretty much sums up all of the speaker's feelings for Harry: large dislike. Aunt Marge (the speaker of this quote) had come up with her dog Ripper in the chapter of 'Aunt Marge's Big Mistake' for a visit with he brother and sister-in-law, Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia.

When Aunt Marge comes, Harry always has a horrible time involving unfair presents, being whacked around the knees, and being chased up a tree by Ripper. This visit, however, he wanted to be good, for he had a lot at stake: the Hogsmeade permission form. Harry made a deal with Uncle Vernon that if he behaved himself for the duration of Aunt Marge's visit, and didn't say anything about where he goes to school; or magic at all for that matter, that Uncle Vernon would sign the permission form for him. Of course, this doesn't exactly work out as planned.

This line was said by Aunt Marge the day that she came to stay with the Dursleys, when Harry comes into the room to greet their guest. Aunt Marge asks if he was still here, and Harry says yes.

This causes Aunt Marge to say this.
3. 'You fainted, Potter? Is Longbottom telling the truth? You actually fainted?' Can you think of the person who said this to Harry?

Answer: Draco Malfoy

Of course, something like this would have to have been said by Draco Malfoy, Harry's archenemy at Hogwarts. In the chapter 'The Dementor', when the students are on the Hogwarts Express, the train stops a little before they reach their final destination, and they allow some Dementors to board the train. One dementor comes to Harry's compartment, the room goes cold, and Harry passes out.

While he's still out of it, he dreams that he hears a woman screaming - which he later finds out to be his mothers screams, right before she dies to save Harry. Neville, Hermione, Ron, Ginny, and Professor Lupin were all in the compartment at the same time, so Neville sees it, and tells people.

When Harry and his friends disembark from the train, they are confronted by Draco and his croonies, and that is where this line is said in the book.
4. 'If all goes well, Professor Boggart Snape will be forced into that vulture-topped hat, that green dress, that big red handbag.' Which Professor is talking to Neville?

Answer: Professor Lupin

This is the part that gets everybody laughing! In the chapter 'The Boggart in the Wardrobe', Professor Lupin gives his first Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson. He wants to make a good impression on the students, so he decides to see what they can against a Boggart - a shapeshifter.

A Boggart will tkae the form of whatever will scare the person the most, for example: Harry - Dementor, Professor Lupin - full moon. For Neville, however, it is Professor Snape (who else?). Now, todays lesson with Professor Lupin revolves around how to get rid of a Boggart.

The best way of course, is laughter. So, when the Boggart comes out of the wardrobe, what each student has to say when it comes to them is 'Riddiculus', and this would cause the Boggart to add to itself (or take away) anything which would make them appear to be funny to the person they are attempting to scare. So, what Professor Lupin tells the students is to concentrate hard on something that would make to Boggart not remotely scary. For Neville, Professor Lupin tells him to concentrate on the clothing that his grandmother wears, and when the Boggart comes out, Professor Boggart Snape becomes bedecked in the clothing of Neville's Grandmother.
5. Fill in the blank 'I did think of Voldemort first,' said ______ honestly. 'But then I - I remembered those Dementors.' Who is talking to Professor Lupin?

Answer: Harry

Harry says this in the chapter 'The Flight of the Fat Lady', when he is talking to Professor Lupin. Harry is left behind because, due to some unfortunate circumstances (Harry blowing up his Aunt Marge the previous summer), Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia didn't get the chance to sign Harry's permission form for him to be able to go to Hogsmeade with all his other friends. Harry has nothing really to do with his afternoon when his friends are not there, so first he goes back to the common room. Unfortunately, Colin Creevey decides that this would be a perfect opportunity for them to get to become better friends - something Harry would rather not persue. So, Harry makes an excuse to leave and heads towards the library when he gets stopped by Filch. Filch sends Harry back to the common room, but when he was quickly getting out of Filch's sight, he walks by an open door, which just by chance happens to be Professor Lupin's room. Professor Lupin invites Harry to have some tea with him, and Harry agrees.

They sit down to to talk, and eventually the subject comes around to the day that they faced the Boggart. Professor Lupin had stopped the Boggart just before it came to Harry, and ever since that day, Harry had thought that Professor Lupin figured that Harry was a coward who wouldn't have been able to handle his greatest fear. In truth, Professor Lupin really just thought that Harry's greatest fear would be Lord Voldemort, and he really didn't want any of the Gryffindors to see him. However, Harry quickly corrects Professor Lupin, stating that the thing that he in fact fears most are Dementors. Professor Lupin said 'Well, well. I'm impressed. That suggests that what you fear most of all is - fear. Very wise, Harry.'
6. 'Honestly, am I the only person who bothered to read 'Hogwarts, a History'?'

Answer: Hermione

Of course, this would be said by Hermione. She probably is the only person who did ever bother to read 'Hogwarts, a History'. She says this in the chapter 'Grim Defeat' when Hermione, Harry, and Ron (along with all the other Hogwarts students) are camped out in the Great Hall, sleeping in purple sleeping bags.

The reason they are sleeping in the Great Hall and not in their regular houses is due to an attack - an attack by Sirius Black. Earlier that evening, when all the Hogwarts residents were in the Great Hall for the Halloween feast, Sirius Black came up to the Gryffindor tower to try and get past the Fat Lady.

He didn't know the password, so she doesn't let him pass. He then gets very angry and slashes the picture viciously, causing the Fat Lady to go and hide. Dumbledore then orders all the students to spend the night in the Great Hall while the teachers search the school.

There are lots of rumours going around that night about how Black could have gotten in, including Apparation, disguises, and flying.

This is why Hermione says this, because of course no one can Apparate onto the Hogwarts school grounds, there are spells stopping them, which she knows by reading 'Hogwarts, A History'.
7. Fill in the blank 'If _______'s teaching Defence Against the Dark Arts again, I'm going off sick," said Ron. (Said to Hermione and Harry.)

Answer: Snape

This is said by Ron in the chapter 'The Maurauders Map'. In this chapter, the older Hogwarts students are taking advantage of another Hogsmeade visit to cool off their nerves. However, Harry doesn't get to go again, or at least, he thinks he won't be able to.

This is when Fred and George throw Harry a lifeline - the Maurauders Map. They had gotten their mischievous little hands on it when they were in their early and more innocent(yeah, right) years at Hogwarts. They had gotten into trouble for setting off a dungbomb, and were in Filch's office being yelled at when they noticed a cabinet labelled 'Confiscated and Highly Dangerous'. So, naturally, they wanted whatever they could grab from it. So, George causes a distraction with another dungbomb, and Fred grabs the first thing he can - the map.

The Maurauders Map gives directions of secret ways to get in and out of the school, as well as labelling wherever a teacher or student that is anywhere nearby was, exactly. Since Fred and George had already memorised all the secret passages, they decide that it is time to give the map on to someone else, someone who needs it. So, of course, they thought of poor Harry, who couldn't go to Hogsmeade with all his friends. Harry then gets to sneak out of the castle via the secret passageway, and spend some time with Ron and Hermione under his invisibility cloak.

This happens later, however, Ron says this at the beginning of chapter. Professor Lupin had been sick, so Snape had to fill in for him. Snape decided that they needed some work on werewolves, so he gave them an assignment of two rolls of parchment. He then proceeds to teach the lesson, and the next day, Ron is freaking out because he really doesn't want Snape to teach defence Against the dark Arts. That is why he says what he does.
8. 'I dare not, Headmaster! If I join the table, we shall be thirteen! Nothing could be more unlucky! never forget that when thirteen dine together, the first to rise will be the first to die!'

Answer: Professor Trelawney

Professor Trelawney is the professor of Divination at Hogwarts, and she hardly ever joins any of the celebrations there. However, this year, she decides to join the twelve other students and teachers for the Christmas feast. The reason that there are so few students this year could be because of the attacks that Sirius Black has done to the castle, including slashing the Fat Lady of Gryffindor tower. Professor Trewlaney 'foresees' in her crystal ball that she would be coming down to the Christmas feast this year, so she comes down from her tower to visit with the few students that have stayed.

When she comes down, she counts the students and teachers that are inhabiting the few places around the table and utters a soft scream. She dares not join them for, she believes, that the first person to rise will die! Of course, the first two people to rise were Harry and Ron, but, as Professor McGonagall pointed out, as long as there wasn't an axe murder waiting for them in the great hall, it is very unlikely that they will just drop dead.
9. Fill in the blank: 'Are you telling me,' _______ whispered, 'That we're in here in this cupboard and we're out there, too?' This is said to Hermione.

Answer: Harry

I suppose that in order to explain to you why this was said by Harry, I'll have to tell you the whole story. Harry, Ron, and Hermione go to Hagrid's cottage to be with him when Buckbeak was executed (June sixth at sundown), so they pull onto themselves the good old Invisibility Cloak and head towards the Forbidden Forest.

When they get there, Hagrid is so shook up, that he can't really pour the tea (his hands are shaking do badly), so Hermione offers to get the other teapot and make the tea. When the opens the other teapot she finds... Scabbers. Ron, Harry and Hermione all thought that Scabbers was dead, because he had left blood on the sheets.

However, Scabbers was there, and very much alive, just looking a little worse for the wear. Eventually, after many tears, Hagrid makes the three of the leave, right before the Minister, Dumbledore and the executioner come to 'take care' of Buckbeak. So, they leave, the three of them under the invisiblity cloak, when Scabbers continues to shake and squirm and attempts to get away.

This causes Ron to move and make a lot of noise. At this point, they weren't very far from Hagrid's cottage, so they heard what they thought was Buckbeak getting his head cut off. Scabbers then gets away from Ron's hands and runs. Ron throws off the invisibility cloak and goes after him. This was a little hindered because of the fact that Crookshanks had come and was attempting to catch Scabbers. Then, a big black dog that Harry had mistaken twice for the Grim came and tackled them, catching Ron and taking him down into the base of the Whomping Willow, but not before Ron's leg caught on a branch and snapped. Harry and Hermione have no idea how to get into where they went, so Crookshanks places his foot onto a knob of the tree and the branches stop waving around. Harry and Hermione use this time to get into the base of tree and follow Ron and the dog. They ran for a long time down a tunnel which eventually led into Hogsmeade, in fact, right into the Shrieking Shack. Sirius Black is there, and is soon joined by Professor Lupin. They start telling the story of Sirius' escape and their time at Hogwarts when they were friends. Then, professor Snape shows himself (he had been hiding under the invisibility cloak) and tries to bind Sirius, but is stopped by the three students. Lupin and Sirius then finish their story, and make Scabbers (a rat) into Peter Pettigrew (a human) and this would give Sirius the proof that he needed in order to be set free. However, this is hindered because Lupin turns into a werewolf, which allows Peter to get away. After all this happens, the Dementors come and attempt to give Harry a little kiss. Harry, Hermione (and eventually Ron) wake up in the Hospital wing. We then find out Hermione's secret, about how she had been getting to all her classes - a Time-Turner. They then use it to go back in time three hours to save Buckbeak and Sirius, but Harry says this line when they are hiding in the broom closet as they are waiting for themselves (three hours earlier) to pass by.
10. Fill in the blank: 'Professor ______ ______, master of this school, commands you to yield the information you conceal!' (Talking to a particular piece of parchment.)

Answer: Severus Snape

Professor Snape says this in the chapter 'Snape's Grudge', when Harry had just come back from Hogsmeade for the second time. Harry had gone through the statue of the witch and went on his way to Hogsmeade with his invisibility cloak. When he got there, he hung out with Ron, until Draco Malfoy and his pals came along. Harry was so fed up with them, that he threw a big wad of mud at the back of their heads and really spooked them out (because of the invisibility cloak they can't see him), and he keeps on throwing mud at them. Harry then gets his cloak stepped on, allowing his head to come into the view of Malfoy, who runs back to Hogwarts and immediately gets Professor Snape.

When Harry gets back (he was sweaty and covered in dirt) Snape summons him to his room and attempts to punish Harry.

He asks him to clean out his pockets and, along with other thing from Zonko's, out comes the Maurauder's map. Snape tries to get the map to reveal its secret, so he says this while placing his wand next to the parchment.

The map reveals nothing, only insults the professor, and Harry is saved by Lupin, whom Snape summons. I hope that you enjoyed this quiz. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to tell me.
