Harry does see a picture of Sirius in the Daily Prophet while riding the Knight Bus, and Stan Shunpike tells Harry a little bit about Sirius. Harry arrived at the Leaky Cauldron after riding the Knight Bus, and Cornelius Fudge never gave Harry a photo of Sirius.

As Ron and Hermione enter the store, Crookshanks (a cat) tries to attack Scabbers. Instead of buying an owl, as she had initially intended to, Hermione buys Crookshanks instead.

Errol is the name of an owl owned by the Weasleys, Pidwidgeon is the owl that Sirius Black gives Ron, and Padfoot is a nickname of Sirius Black. None of these attacked Scabbers in Diagon Alley.

When Lupin mentions the Riddikulus charm, Malfoy states that the class is ridiculous. Expecto Patronum is the spell used to repel Dementors. Squibilicious is not a spell; however, you might call Filch this.

Harry acquired the map from Fred and George Weasley, who stole the map from Filch's office.

The four names on the map are indications of the animals the four men transform into. Being an animangus, Peter Pettigrew can turn himself into a rat (wormtail). Sirius can transform himself into a dog (padfoot), and James Potter could transform himself into a stag (prongs). Lupin, while not an animangus like his friends, was a werewolf, hence the nickname Moony.

Professor Lupin misses class due to being sick. Snape comes and teaches the class about werewolves, even though this is a topic that is supposed to be discussed later on in the term. He then instructs the students to write an essay on the recognition and ways of defeating a werewolf. This is when Hermione first realizes that Professor Lupin is a werewolf.

The Dementor's kiss is used as the most severe form of punishment at Azkaban. It is said that a Dementor's kiss is far worse than death itself, as without a soul, your body continues on acting as an empty shell with no memory or recognition of yourself.

Hermione receives the Time-Turner from Professor McGonagall in the beginning of the book. Hermione receives this so that she can attend more classes (more than one at the same time) than would normally be possible. She is given this item under the instructions to use it only for taking extra classes, and that she is never seen using it.

By going back in time, Harry and Hermione are able to save both Buckbeak and Sirius Black. They save Buckbeak from an unjust execution, and they use Buckbeak to help Sirius escape imprisonment. R.J. Sirius Black sends Harry a signed permission slip for Hogsmeade after his escape from Hogwarts. Sirius sent Harry the slip, and a note telling Harry that he is safe and it was he who bought Harry the Firebolt for Christmas.

Right before Harry passed out, he saw a Patronus of a stag appear and repel the Dementors. Harry believed this was his father; however, as we find out later, Harry used the memory of his father to cast the Patronus himself, repelling the Dementors away.
