Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is revealed to have a mutant power in this book?

Answer: Edward

Unconsciously, he had been changing the color of his skin, blending in to any background he was in. This is the first of many different "powers" some of the Remnants gain throughout the series. This book also features the first time Edward speaks in the series.
2. Who is mentioned in the second book but never make(s) an appearance in this book?

Answer: Kubrick and his father Albert DiSalvo

Yes, it's true: these two are not mentioned in the entire book. They wake up in the second novel and aren't referenced again. However, they eventually return later in the series. Kubrick is even given a cover of himself on a book later on.
3. What color blood do the Riders have?

Answer: Purple

When Tamara fights the aliens, she is able to kill a few. She even manages to steal weapons from them. No one acknowledges the fact that the blood is purple; it is only mentioned in passing: "Tamara ... came up the stairs, spear shouldered, unconcerned by the purple blood oozing down its length." It is after this that she says one of the most eerie lines of the series: "Everything dies, human."
4. Who says the following line: "There's a lesson for you. In a war the warrior rules"?

Answer: Yago

Yago mentions this to himself when realizing how powerful Tamara was, and how she was able to protect them all. He is always concerned with politics and with gaining power, but he has to admit that Tamara was the boss, and not Wylson, who "play-acted" at being in charge. She called meetings with only the adults and Yago attending.
5. What is the name of the Blue Meanie that follows Jobs' group?

Answer: Four Sacred Streams

The Blue Meanie follows the group and saves them often. The group is able to communicate with him by making contact with Billy. It is through Billy that they successfully speak, and Four Sacred Streams names himself. Before, it would take minutes for the Meanie to understand the humans. Because of Billy, they are able to learn more about the ways of the ship they are on.
6. What name do Jobs and the others give to the pony in the Brueghel painting?

Answer: Eeyore

Before using the pony, Jobs and Mo' Steel were forced to carry Billy around. Billy is still unable to move and talk in this book. The pony Eeyore drags a wagon very slowly around, carrying Billy. It couldn't move any more than three miles per hour. It is set in a Pieter Brueghel painting.
7. Late in the story, everyone in Mo'Steel's group is in great peril. Who saves them?

Answer: The Blue Meanie

2Face and Edward were too busy struggling to survive to save the others. Tamara did save many people, but not Mo'Steels' group. Four Sacred Streams saved Mo, Jobs, Olga, Billy, and Violet by sacrificing himself. It was his duty to destroy the node that had been created.

He set his suit to detonate, destroying the node in which they were trapped. Violet was drowning - and smothering - in a black tar pit. Mo'Steel was about to be cooked alive. Jobs was stuck on a long blade, getting cut with every move he made. Olga had been stabbed in the side, and Billy had been abandoned. Four Sacred Streams told Mo "Sing to my people of my death."
8. While running away from the demons, Jobs wonders how far his group has walked. How many steps had they taken?

Answer: Four-hundred-nineteen

Mo'Steel answered Jobs with four-hundred-nineteen steps taken. He has an amazing ability with numbers. It turns out that Mo' Steel is not only a thrill-seeking athlete, he is a number savant. He is not traditionally book-smart, but he does have a way with numbers. He also automatically knows the square root of any number.
9. KA Applegate uses several different artists in the series. Which of the following artists is featured in this book?

Answer: Bosch

Bosch's "Last Judgment" is featured in the novel. Throughout the entire story, the characters flee and flight all of the demons in the painting. Several demons are described, most defying the human imagination. In fact, for the first time, Mo'Steel breaks down and "bunnies," a futuristic term he uses to describe someone who chickens out or becomes afraid.
10. Wylson and her group encounter a mysterious door, and Wylson worries about what it contains. What lies beyond the door?

Answer: Two creatures from a painting

The two demons shook the remnants to their core. One was a creature that looked like a clothed frog with a woman's face holding an iron pan over a fire. The other, which did nothing but stare, was an antlered deer standing on its hind legs. These demons are from Boschs' "Last Judgment."
