Professor Snape, the rather biased Potions teacher, is also the head of Slytherin. He favors the Slytherins and looks for any excuse to knock points off of the other houses, Gryffindor especially.

Tom Riddle and his cronies attended Hogwarts over fifty years ago. Riddle changed his name to Voldemort after leaving Hogwarts. We know that Riddle was in Slytherin because 1) he's Slytherin's heir and 2) Hagrid says so in 'Sorcerer's Stone', chapter 5, 'Diagon Alley'.

Well, not that we know of, anyway. Seriously! Check out the chapter of 'Order of the Phoenix' entitled 'The Lion and the Serpent'. Angelina Johnson and Professor McGonagall clearly state that Gryffindor won. (Of course, Malfoy didn't get on to the Slytherin Quidditch team on talent. One time, the Golden Snitch was only inches away from his left ear and he failed to notice it, preferring to taunt Harry instead of doing his job as Seeker. Captain Marcus Flint wasn't very happy about that.)

Incidentally, the Bloody Baron is the only one who can control Peeves the Poltergeist. Nearly Headless Nick is the Gryffindor ghost, the Fat Friar is the Hufflepuff ghost, and Professor Binns is the History of Magic teacher. (In case you were wondering, the Ravenclaw ghost is the Grey Lady.)

According to Book 2, Salazar Slytherin created the Chamber of Secrets which his heir alone could open. You can only open the Chamber if you can speak Parseltongue.

Another reason might be that Malfoy can't leave well enough alone, but he did get scorched by a Blast-Ended Skrewt and slashed by a hippogriff during two different Care of Magical Creatures classes, taught by Hagrid. Of course he just couldn't resist telling Umbridge those facts when she inspected the Care of Magical Creatures class the first time in the fifth book.
