1. What is the national Dutch flower?

Answer: tulip

Although the tulip is originally from Turkey, all around the world people think of the Netherlands (Holland) if they hear the word tulip.
2. The Dutch have an unusually colored candy called 'drop' and it is totally black. Is this a type of liquorice?

Answer: Yes

Drop is black and comes in sweet pieces but also in salty pieces; there is a huge variety of dropjes.
3. Now a question about shoes. If you say you are from Holland what will people think you are wearing on your feet?

Answer: wooden shoes (clogs)

These wooden shoes were commonly used back in the early 20th century, mostly on farms. They were made from solid wood. You can still buy these wooden shoes; one place where you can buy them is on the Zaanse Schans in Noord-Holland near Amsterdam.
4. What is the name of the machine that uses the power of the wind to grind grain, pump water, or do other work?

Answer: windmill

The windmill is a well-known symbol of the Netherlands. There are still working mills in the country, and lots of them can be visited. At Kinderdijk there are 19 mills still active and well maintained. One mill originally from the Netherlands was relocated to the village Holland in Michigan, USA and can also be visited.
5. We all know that in Japan you can eat raw fish. But in the Netherlands you can also eat raw fish, mostly with chopped onions. What type of fish is this?

Answer: herring

The proper way to eat this fish is to take it by the tail, hold it above your head, put your head up and open your mouth. Enjoy this salty fish!

Answer: Sint Maarten

Kids go to the houses in the neighborhood at night and sing songs to the people, and as a reward they receive candy, similar to the way kids on Halloween receive candy for trick-or-treating.

Answer: Sint Nicolaas

Sinterklaas is originated from Myra, Turkey although the kids learn he comes from Spain with his helpers Zwarte Pieten. He comes to visit them in the Netherlands two weeks before his birthday and he comes by steamship. His birthday is celebrated on the 5th of December, although some people think his birthday is on the 6 December.

The children do not care as long as they receive their presents!
8. As in many countries, Christmas is a special period of the year in Holland as well. Is it true that in Holland we celebrate two days of Christmas?

Answer: yes

We celebrate first day of Christmas on the 25th of December and second day of Christmas on the 26th of December. The 26th of December is known as Boxing Day in many countries.
9. In Holland we play many sports. If I say the name Johan Cruijff, what sport am I thinking of?

Answer: soccer

I can also mention Ruud Gullit, Marco van Basten, Edwin van der Sar, who are other well-known Dutch sportspeople. If I kept going, it would be a long list!
10. There is another sport which has produced many champions for Holland throughout the years. What is this winter sport?

Answer: Allround speedskating

There are different length of races in the Allround Class, the short races are 500 meters and 1500 meters, and the long races are 5000 meters and 10000 meters for the men. The women skate 500 meters, 1500 meters, 3000 meters and 5000 meters.
