Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Starting with "A", this northern European city is known in Gaelic as Obar Deathain. It's nickname is "The Granite City", and it is the birthplace of singer Annie Lennox.

Answer: Aberdeen

Most of the city was built in the Victorian era when granite was a popular building material. The second largest granite building in the world (after the Escorial, Madrid) can be found there - Marischal College on Broad Street.
2. This town beginning with "B" is in the French Basque country. It is a popular seaside town on the Bay of Biscay, some 18 miles from the Spanish border.

Answer: Biarritz

Biarritz is a gorgeous seaside town with a fantastic beach, popular with surfers and tourists. The Basque country describes the south western part of France, and the adjacent north eastern tip of Spain. The "country" takes its roots from the Aquitani tribe who were first discovered by Julius Caesar.
3. This European "C" town has a famous castle on the sea, built by Edward I in the 13th century, and used to crown successive princes of Wales since 1911.

Answer: Caernarfon

"Caernarfon" means the "castle opposite Anglesey". Indeed, if you stand on the ramparts of Caernarfon Castle, the beaches of Anglesey are only a very short distance away across the Menai Straits.
4. This "D" county in the southwest of England is the real life version of novelist Thomas Hardy's semi-fictional Wessex. The popular holiday resorts of Bournemouth, Poole and Weymouth can be found within its boundaries.

5. This European "E" country lies towards the east of the continent. In its native tongue, it's known as "Eesti" - but what do we call this country in English speaking countries?

6. This "F" city is the capital of the province of Tuscany, and sits on the River Arno. It was ruled by the Medici family for many years.

Answer: Florence

Florence is home to Michelangelo's famous sculpture "David". The majority of people around Forence speak Florentine - it is a Tuscan dialect, and considered by many scholars to be the mother of the Italian language.
7. This central European "G" city is known as Genf in German. It is situated next to a large lake - and much of the 1964 James Bond film "Goldfinger" was based here.

Hull (or Kingston on Hull to give its full name) is a city in Northern England.
Helsinki is the capital of Finland, and its main harbour on the Baltic Sea is ice bound for almost half of the year. Hospitalet de Llobregat is a city in Spain, and Hamburg is in Germany. All have football teams, Hamburg and Helsinki has an ice hockey team - but only Hull has a rugby league team!
9. This "M" city is found in the extreme northeast of mainland Europe. It serves as a major port for the Russian Navy, and its population is approaching half a million people.

Answer: Murmansk

The average temperature in Murmansk is below freezing for two thirds of the year - but the sea never freezes, even in temperatures below 10 degrees fahrenheit, because of the North Atlantic drift ocean current. It is twinned with Jacksonville in Florida - another place where the sea doesn't freeze!
10. This English "L" city was originally known by the Celtic name "Loidis". Today, it is the home to the Royal Armouries.

Answer: Leeds

Leeds is a city in Yorkshire, in the north of England. It is built on the old Celtic forest of Loidis, where the modern name for the city came from.
