The first commandment is "I am the Lord your God. You shall have no other gods before me". If we follow this commandment, the others are much easier. God wants us to serve him with our whole heart. He wants to be at the center of our lives. If we put Him at the center, He will guide us and take care of us.

An idol is something someone worships in the place of God. In history many of these were statues people made themselves. Sometimes people worship things more than they do God. It hurts God because He cares and loves us very much. He wants us to thank and appreciate him more than anything else.

Most people do not like it when their name is used in a bad way or when people yell at them. Our names represent who we are. God is the same way. It hurts Him when his name is used as a swear or curse word instead of something that is respected.

Answer: Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy

The Sabbath day was a day that the Jews set aside to honor God. They set aside one day a week to go to church and worship Him. In many other countries they have different days. Most people in the United States and Canada set aside Sunday as a day for God.

The important thing is that we honor God by keeping that day of the week for Him. He wants to spend time with us and be a part of our lives.

Answer: Honor your father and your mother

"Honor your father and mother" is the fifth commandment. Sometimes what Mom and Dad may ask us to do may not be very fun and also hard to understand. In most cases, they want the best for us. When they ask us to do chores, they want us to learn responsibility for when we are grown ups like them.

When they ask us to go to bed, they also want us to rest so we can focus the next day. (It's very hard to work or have fun when you are falling asleep from staying up too late the night before). God has given them great responsibility to care for us while we grow up.

Murder takes away someone else's life. It causes pain to the person that does it as well as the person that dies. Murders leave many families and friends without loved ones they once had. God wants us to honor each life as He does.

Answer: Do not commit adultery

Adultery, like so many other sins causes hurt to others. God wants families to love, support, and trust one another, because He cares for us. Adultery can make that very hard and causes many families to fall apart. However if we love God and keep His commandments, he will help us with decisions we make in life and how we love others.

Answer: Do not steal

Stealing takes away what rightfully belongs to others. Stealing a candy bar may not seem like much. However stealing causes the store to lose money, and if the store loses money, they can't pay people to work. Stealing other things also has similar effects. God does not want us to hurt others by taking things that they have or need, when He cares for us and provides for our needs.

Answer: Do not lie

Lying hurts others worse than honesty does. If a person lies, eventually other people will stop trusting what they say. It also hurts others worse when they find out the truth later. God is truthful and honest with us and wants us to do the same. When we are honest, people can depend on us more.

Answer: Do not covet

"Covet" means to desire something badly that is really someone else's. Another word for it is "jealousy". God wants us to appreciate what He has given us. When we desire someone else's things we sometimes make ourselves very unhappy and lose appreciation for what we have.
