Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What colour is the snitch?

Answer: Golden

Yup, it's golden and extremely difficult to catch according to J.K. Rowling. In 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone', in Harry Potter's first game of Quidditch for Gryffindor house he caught the Golden Snitch in his mouth. That same Golden Snitch was gifted to Harry in Albus Dumbledore's will ('Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows').

When Harry sacrifices himself for Voldemort, the Golden Snitch opens and inside is the Resurrection Stone which is one of the three Deathly Hallows. Harry does not die though, he just kills the part of Voldemort inside himself.
2. In 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone', what size and shape does J.K. Rowling describe the Golden Snitch as being?

Answer: Similar to a walnut

Absolutely miniscule! The incredibly small winged ball started off not a ball at all, but a small bird called the Golden Snidget. The Snidget was introduced in 1269 when Barberus Bragge (Chief of the wizard's council) unveiled the tiny winged bird at the start, offering a prize of 150 Galleons for the first player to catch it. ('Quidditch Through the Ages').
3. Which player catches the Snitch?

Answer: Seeker

In each team there is one Keeper. The Keepers guard three hoops at opposite ends of the pitch. Three Chasers are in each team, and they try to score a goal by getting the Quaffle (a red soccer-ball sized ball) past the opposing Keeper and into one of the three hoops.

It's not that simple to score, though, because each team has two Beaters whose job it is to hit Bludgers (there are two bludgers) which are made of iron, at the opposing Chasers, using a bat. And last, but not least, the Seeker tries to catch the tiny Snitch before the opposing Seeker does.
4. In a photo of a Quidditch team which player sits in the centre?

Answer: The Seeker

Harry Potter and his father James Potter were both Seekers ('Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets'). The brother of Sirius Black (Harry's godfather), Regulus Black, was Seeker for the Slytherin Quidditch team when he was at Hogwarts ('Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows'). The job of a Seeker is to catch the Golden Snitch before the opposite team's Seeker does.
5. Who created the 'Wronski Feint'?

Answer: Josef Wronski

Josef Wronski was a world-famous Seeker. Viktor Krum performs the Wronski Feint in the World Cup ('Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'). The Wronski Feint is performed when the Seeker goes into a dive pretending to have seen the Snitch and the opposite Seeker follows, but the player pulls out at the last moment, sending the other player into the ground ('Quidditch Through the Ages').
6. Famed Seeker Viktor Krum played Quidditch professionally for what country?

Answer: Bulgaria

Krum caught the snitch, but Bulgaria still lost to Ireland, in the Quidditch World Cup that Harry Potter attended ('Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'). Viktor attended the Durmstrang Institute and his wand was made, not by Ollivander in Diagon Alley, but another famed wand maker, Gregorovitch.
7. Who is the Hogwarts Quidditch referee and flying teacher?

Answer: Madam Hooch

Madam Hooch taugh Harry Potter and his friends/classmates how to fly in 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'. Madam Hooch's full name is Rolanda Hooch. In 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban', Madam Hooch was in charge of stripping Harry's broomstick that was sent in the mail by a anonymous sender who later was revealed as Sirius Black.
8. The Snitch can hover and fly because it has what flying mechanism?

Answer: Wings

The Snitch is based on the Golden Snidget. Witches and wizards thought it was mean to catch the small birds and scrunch up their wings, so the Snitch was developed as a substitute. For Harry's seventeenth birthday (in 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows'), Molly Weasley made him a snitch-shaped cake.
9. How many players are allowed to potentially touch the Snitch in a Quidditch match?

Answer: Two

The two seekers can touch the Golden Snitch during a Quidditch match as it is their job as Seeker to catch it. Anyone who handles the snitch before the game it is used in has to wear gloves or protection on their hands because the Snitch has a flesh memory and would remember touching the flesh of that person, which would interfere with the Quidditch match in which that Golden Snitch is used. If any other player touches it, then it is a foul which is called Snitchnip ('Quidditch Through the Ages').

Therefore, only two players can legally touch the Snitch during a Quidditch match.
10. How many players can enter the opposing team's scoring area at one time?

Answer: One

One Chaser can enter the opposing scoring area at one time. If more than one Chaser enters the scoring area, it is called Stooging. Without this rule, the Keeper would be bombarded, and it would be very hard to watch three goal hoops and three Chasers at once ('Quidditch Through the Ages').
