Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these would you consult to have your fortune told?

Answer: Chiromantist

The word chiromantist (also spelled cheiromantist) was used in 'Lord Arthur Savile's Crime' by Oscar Wilde. For a time, Lady Windermere was very dependent on Mr. Podgers, a chiromantist who read her palm twice a week to tell her fortune 'and misfortunes, too.'

2. Who is the author of the Nero Wolfe mysteries?

Answer: Rex Stout

Rex Stout is the correct answer. He wrote over seventy Nero Wolfe short stories and novels between 1934 and 1975. He never changed the main characters, therefore you didn't need to read them in order.

3. What was the name of the IBM computer which famously beat Gary Kasparov at chess in 1997?

Answer: Deep Blue

Deep Blue, a chess-playing computer developed by IBM, was the first computer to beat a reigning chess champion. It won the second of two six-game matches against Garry Kasparov on May 11th, 1997, after Kasparov made a mistake in the opening moves of the last game. Kasparov accused IBM of cheating, claiming that there had been 'human intervention' during the match, and demanded a rematch. IBM denied the allegations, refused and dismantled Deep Blue.

4. Which is the THIRD book of E.L. James' trilogy that started a whole new craze for women and, allegedly, a baby boom in 2011/2012?

Answer: Fifty Shades Freed

The books, mostly read by women, have been dubbed 'mommy porn' for their explicit content and details. '50 Shades of Grey' was first, '50 Shades Darker' was the second book and '50 Shades Freed' was the third book of the trilogy. As of September 2012, there is no book with the title 'Fifty Shades of Red' - anybody want to write it?

5. I will give you 1) A single, 2) A member of a band, 3) An album. All you have to do is tell me the band. 1) 'Born on the Bayou' 2) John Fogerty 3) 'Willie and the Poor Boys' Who were the band?

Answer: Creedence Clearwater Revival

Creedence Clearwater Revival released 'Born on the Bayou' in 1968 as the 'B' side of 'Proud Mary' and as such it reached number two on the Billboard charts.
John Fogerty, the main singer/songwriter for the band, along with Tom Fogerty, Stu Cook and Doug Clifford made up CCR. 'Willie and the Poor Boys' was the band's fourth album and reached number three on the Billboard charts.

Some additional useless information: CCR's 16th single, which was released in 1970, was the double 'A' sided single "Lookin' out My Back Door" / "Long as I Can See the Light". Because of the way the Billboard charts were scored at the time this was counted as both the fourth AND fifth CCR single to reach the number two spot on the Billboard 100 charts thus making CCR the first band to have five number two scoring single releases without ever reaching the coveted number one spot.

6. Which of the following Presidents was openly left-handed? (Hint: He was the first left handed president.)

Answer: James Garfield

Whilst there is some debate about how many Presidents were truly left handed, it is usually agreed that James Garfield was the first openly 'left handed' President.

James Garfield, from Ohio, was a Major General in the Union army. In 1880, he was elected as the 20th President of the United States. On July 2nd, 1881, he was wounded by an assassin in Washington, DC and died from his wounds on September 19th. He was the second president to be assassinated.

According to 'Anythinglefthanded.co.uk' Barack Obama, when elected, was the eighth left handed President; the others being James Garfield, Herbert Hoover, Harry Truman, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H W Bush, and Bill Clinton.

Answer: Army Wives

Patti Lupone (Libby Thacher) and Kellie Martin (Becca Thacher) starred in the four year run of "Life Goes On." Kellie joined the cast of "Army Wives" on a recurring basis in 2012 as Army Captain Nicole Galassini. When Kellie's mother visited from out of town, viewers were treated to Patti Lupone's portrayal of Ms. Galassini. The episode title was "Battle Scars."

8. Where can you find hurricanes and typhoons?

Answer: Hurricanes occur in the Western hemisphere and Typhoons occur in the Eastern hemisphere

The only difference between a hurricane and a typhoon is its geographical location. A hurricane is a tropical cyclone found in the WESTERN hemisphere and a typhoon is a tropical cyclone found in the EASTERN hemisphere.
Both of these storms are areas of low atmospheric pressure and are typically characterised by an 'eye' at the centre, this 'eye' is usually 19-40 miles (30-65km) in diameter.
The word 'typhoon' originates from the Greek 'Typhon' who, according to Greek mythology, was the monster associated with storms.
'Hurricane' is derived from the Spanish name 'Huracán', which in turn originates from the name 'Juracán' the Carib/Taino storm god.

Van 'The Man' Morrison (born George Ivan Morrison) was given his first guitar at the age of eleven and started his recording career whilst still in his teens. 'Brown Eyed Girl' was released in 1967 and whilst it reached number ten on the Billboard Hot 100, surprisingly, did not chart in the UK.
