From its Latin root, via Old French, the word 'general' entered Middle English in which its meaning was much the same as today's. Its primary uses are as an adjective describing something widespread, and as a noun to indicate an army officer of high rank.

Although the 'General Lee' was supposed to be the same car throughout, during the seven years that "The Dukes of Hazzard" was produced it is estimated that approximately 250-330 1968 and 1969 model Dodge Chargers were used, with an average of one car used up per episode.

At the beginning of February 1974, Prime Minister Edward Heath called a general election for the 28th February. Upon the final counting of votes, the Labour Party, led by Harold Wilson, became the largest party in the House of Commons, but without an overall majority.

As a consequence, although Wilson succeeded Heath as Prime Minister, a further election was called in October. Following this, the Labour Party gained a majority of three seats, with Wilson returned as Prime Minster.

Although Einstein first presented his work on General Relativity at the Prussian Academy of Sciences in November 1915, it was following the expedition to study the solar eclipse of 29 May 1919, in which Arthur Eddington proved one of the major principles of Einstein's theory, that Einstein achieved worldwide recognition.

Buick and Cadillac are brands that were founded in the early years of automobile production in the United States, before being purchased by the fledgling General Motors Corporation. Chevrolet came about after the first president of GM was removed from his position, after which he formed a new company that eventually purchased GM. Lincoln is a brand belonging to GM's major rival, Ford.

In the United Kingdom, the regulatory body for nurses and midwives is the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). The NMC was set up in 2002 to replace the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting. This in turn had been formed in 1983, replacing a body called the General Nursing Council.

The Arleigh Burke class destroyer was initially developed and built for the US Navy by the Bath Iron Works shipyard in Bath, Maine, with the first ship commissioned in July 1991. Subsequent to this, in 1995 Bath Iron Works was purchased by General Dynamics.

Answer: Washington Generals

The Washington Generals team was founded by Louis "Red" Klotz in 1952, after he was invited by Globetrotters owner Abe Saperstein to create a side team to accompany them on tour and serve as their regular opponents. The team was named the Washington Generals to commemorate President Eisenhower. To give the illusion of variety, the Generals played under a number of identities over the years, most famously as the New Jersey Reds.

It was in this guise that the Generals famously beat the Globetrotters by 100 points to 99 in January 1971.

Answer: Benjamin Harrison

In 1862, Indiana Governor Oliver Morton enlisted the help of Benjamin Harrison, then serving as Reporter of the Indiana Supreme Court, to help with the recruitment of men for the Union Army. Morton initially commissioned Harrison as a captain in the 70th Indiana Regiment before raising him to colonel and command in August 1862. Following Harrison's service in command of a brigade in the XX Corps, in January 1865 President Lincoln brevetted Harrison to the rank of Brigadier-General, before he was discharged in June 1865.

Answer: Captain-General

Although Captain-General is not a position in the US Army, it is used as a rank in a number of US states' forces, with the constitutions of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Vermont all explicitly appointing their state governors as 'captain-general' of their state armed forces.
