Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's begin with "Chardonnay" itself. One of the most famous brands of white wine. Where does the name "Chardonnay" come from?

Answer: From the grape variety used for its production

The grape variety of Chardonnay originated in the Burgundy region of France. Chardonnay wine is used to accompany white meats, such as turkey, as a part of a meal. Today, Chardonnay grapes are cultivated in all the wine-making regions of the world.
2. Chardonnay most probably originated in the medieval period, but wine was known in most ancient civilizations, most notably in Ancient Greece. Who was the Ancient Greek god of wine?

Answer: Dionysus

Dionysus was the son of Zeus and Semele in Greek Mythology. He was one of the most popular gods, although not one of the Twelve Olympians. In Athens, his feasts were many, most notably the Great and Lesser Dionysia, where tragedies were played.
3. One of the most famous paintings depicting wine is "The Last Supper". It shows us the Last Supper of Jesus Christ and the Twelve Disciples, a short while before the arrest of Jesus Christ and his crucifixion. Who painted this masterpiece?

Answer: Leonardo da Vinci

The painting was made by Leonardo da Vinci between 1494 and 1498. Numerous painters have made paintings depicting the same scene, each with his own style, but Leonardo was first among them. The painting is located in Milan, Italy.
4. Perhaps the most well-known wine of all is champagne, a sparkling white wine. The painting shown here is the first depiction of champagne in art. What is the painting's name?

Answer: The Oyster Lunch

The painting was made by Jean-Francois de Troy. De Troy was a French painter of the Rococo movement. Many of De Troy's paintings were made for the palaces of Versailles and Fontainebleau. He also made a couple of tapestries for the Gobelins manufactory.
5. Wine can also play a major or minor role in movies. In the James Bond movie "A View To A Kill", a substantial amount of the action takes place in Paris. One of the best scenes was when the detective Aubergine, to whom Bond went for information, was assassinated whilst drinking champagne with 007 close to a famous Paris landmark. Which one?

Answer: The Eiffel Tower

Aubergine was a detective investigating why Max Zorin's horses were winning in races, while they were of a humble breed and were difficult to control. Aubergine was murdered by Zorin's helper and lover, May Day, whom Bond chased in the whole of Paris in vain.
6. Wine has also given the inspiration for several quotes, like: "Wine is constant proof that God loves us and loves to see us happy." Which of the following American Founding Fathers said something similar?

Answer: Benjamin Franklin

Franklin, apart from being a major figure in the American War for Independence, was a scientist and is today known for his experiment with a kite and electricity. Franklin also served as Governor of Pennsylvania from 1785 to 1788. He was also an abolitionist, freeing his slaves at his last years and campaigning for the abrogation of the institution.
7. Wine also appears in religion. In the Bible, in the Book of Kings, wicked king Ahab and his wife Jezebel acquired a vineyard by murdering the occupant. A prophet was sent by the Lord to confront the wicked King, who was also a Baal worshipper. Who was that prophet?

Answer: Elijah

The vineyard Ahab coveted belonged to a man named Naboth. Initially, Ahab offered Naboth a better vineyard but he refused because the Lord had commanded him not to part with his land. Ahab finally murdered Naboth and took the vineyard.

Elijah, as commanded by the Lord, goes to Ahab and exposes him, calling him an enemy of the Lord, prophesizing his fate and his wife's fate. Ahab, for fear of the punishment, repented. The Lord spares Ahab from his fate, but not his wicked Queen, Jezebel and her children.
8. There are many references to wine in songs. Here is one, talking about champagne: "Mirrors on the ceiling, the pink champagne on ice And she said 'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device'" From which song does it come?

Answer: Hotel California

"Hotel California" was recorded by "Eagles". It was contained in the album with the same title, being released as a single in early 1977. The lyrics talk about a surrealistic adventure of a traveler who checks in a hotel, named "Hotel California", which turns out to be a nightmarish place, from where nobody can live.

The song is said to be an allegory on hedonism, greed and self-destruction in 1960s and 70s America, although this view has been disputed.
9. Wine couldn't be absent from the theater, Shakespeare's plays included. In one of them, Gertrude, wife of the King and mother to the hero, drinks poisoned wine intended for her son. In which of the Bard's play does it occur?

Answer: Hamlet

The play's full title is "The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark". It was written around 1600. Hamlet is the son of King Hamlet, who was murdered by his brother, Claudius. Claudius has also married the King's wife, Gertrude, who is the mother of Prince Hamlet.

The wine scene occurs near the end of the play, as a result of a conspiracy by Claudius and others to kill Hamlet, which achieves its purpose, but with Hamlet also having his revenge on Claudius.
10. Wine is enjoyed by most people around the world. Every language has its term for wine. Which of the following translations of the word is NOT matched correctly with the language it is used?

Answer: "Vinho", Spanish

"Vinho" is the Portuguese translation for "wine". "Vino" is the correct Spanish translation. In Catalan, another language spoken in Spain, "wine" is translated as "vi".
Many terms for wine are derived from the Greek word, "Oinos", including all used here.
