Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My birthday is September 17th. On this day in 1862, a momentous battle was fought, resulting in the loss of nearly 23,000 lives. Can you identify the battle?

Answer: Battle of Antietam

The Battle of Antietam (or Sharpsburg) took an estimated 22,717 lives. It was the first major battle of the Civil War to be fought in the North (in Maryland). Having discovered Robert E. Lee's battle orders, the Army of the Potomac under George McClellan advanced at about dawn on Lee's troops. The battle raged all day with no outright winner. However the South withdrew, encouraging Lincoln to write and issue the Emancipation Proclamation, which ultimately led to the end of the Civil War.(Source: Civil War Trust).

2. Arrr matey! I was born on September 19. On this day in 1995 Cap'n Slappy, and Ol' Chumbucket invented this spoof of a holiday, which is quite popular each year. Guess what it is, or walk the plank!

Answer: International Talk Like a Pirate Day

International Talk Like a Pirate Day is a spoof holiday (you don't get the day off with or without pay, but good luck trying) created by the warped minds of John Baur (Old Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Cap'n Slappy) from Oregon, USA, who decided that everyone should talk like a pirate on this day. Ever since newspaper columnist Dave Barry promoted the day it has grown into quite a huge yearly event, with people dressing up as pirates and throwing parties. It also gives me another reason to get into the rum on September 19...Arrrr!

Where did this battle take place?

Answer: Yorktown, Virginia

On the day of the surrender at Yorktown, General Cornwallis fell ill with an undefined sickness (sour grapes, perhaps) and sent his second in command to meet with Washington and sign the papers for surrender. The resulting Treaty of Paris (1783) granted full independence to the United States. John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and John Jay represented the U.S. at the treaty signing. Cornwallis later became Governor-General of India (twice) and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. He died in 1805. In the 2000 film "The Patriot", he was portrayed by British actor Tom Wilkinson,

9. The Catholic church celebrates a saint's day on September 17th. This visionary lived from 1098 to 1179, founded two Benedictine monasteries, composed a huge body of music still performed today, wrote books on many subjects, and is recognized as one of the great philosophers of the time. Who was this?

Answer: Hildegard of Bingen

Hildegard's legacy to the church was massive - she still found time to get herself excommunicated for getting up the hierarchy's nose, but was later reconciled with the church. In 2012, Pope Benedict XVI named her as a Doctor of the Church. Not many of those, male OR female.

Eleanor of Aquitaine, C1122 - 1204 was Queen of France for 15 years, later married the future King Henry II of England. Katherine Hepburn played her brilliantly in 'The Lion in Winter'
While he founded a number of communities for monks, Saint Benedict C480 - C547 did not found an order.
St Martin of Nairne doesn't exist (yet), but probably deserves to be elevated to sainthood for patience with her team leader on this quiz.

10. On 19 September 1893, women received the right to vote in elections in what country? (Think sheep)

Answer: New Zealand

Lord Glasgow, the Governor of New Zealand, signed the act into law. Women were allowed to vote for the first time in November of the same year. Australia allowed women to vote and stand for federal parliament in 1902.

In Canada and USA, women had to wait until after the First World War to win this right. In Vatican City, as of 2014, women still can't vote, though there are only 30 some female citizens.
