Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On what ship was Francis Scott Key able to see 'bombs bursting in air' when he was inspired to write the lyrics for "The Star Spangled Banner"?

Answer: HMS Tonnant

He first wrote a poem, "The Defence of Fort McHenry" in 1814. He had seen the bombardment of the fort by the British Royal Navy during the War of 1812. The poem was later set to the music of "The Anacreontic Song" written by John Stanford Smith in 1780. In 1931 it was officially adopted as the national anthem of the U.S.

In Sept., 1814, after the burning of Washington by the British, Key and John Stuart Skinner set sail on the HMS Minden, flying a truce flag, as their mission was to complete an exchange of prisoners. Both Key and Skinner were held captive on the British HMS Tonnant, (a former French ship) until after the battle because they had overheard British plans during the exchange negotiations.

The HMS Erebus created the 'rocket's red glare' and the HMS Meteor sent off some of the 'bombs bursting in air'. By morning, Key was able to see the large American flag flying over the fort. It was a handmade flag with 15 stars and 15 stripes. It has been twice restored and is treasured by the Smithsonian Institute.

2. Which of the two warheads did Major T.J. Kong choose to 'ride' in the 1964 film "Dr. Strangelove"?

Answer: Hi There

Subtitled 'How I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb', "Dr. Strangelove"
was a very dark comedy played out during the Cold War.

Before he went below to manually release the inoperable bomb bay doors, Major Kong said, "Well, boys, we got three engines out, we got more holes in us than a horse trader's mule, the radio is gone and we're leaking fuel, and if we was flying any lower we'd need sleigh bells on this thing..." Being on the Air Force plane that made it below the radar through enemy (Russian) lines to a target, the mission was to drop a nuclear warhead. Slim Pickens played the part of Major T.J.'King' Kong. Our last view of him is cowboy hat waving in the air and him yelling war cries as he and the bomb plummet to earth.

The other warhead was named 'Dear John'.

In spite of its 'end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it' theme, this 1964 film was hilarious and the characters and some of their lines were memorable. Peter Sellers played three roles in the film. Another war film directed by Stanley Kubrick, this is possibly the best remembered.

3. This 1980 film spoof was patterned after the t.v. show "Get Smart". What was it called?

Answer: The Nude Bomb

Maxwell Smart, aka Agent 86, features in this zany comedy about espionage. The plot concerns the good guys' attempts to thwart plans of enemy spies to detonate a bomb which destroys clothing only. The cast included Don Adams, Sylvia Kristel, Rhonda Fleming and Pamela Hensley.

When the film debuted on t.v., it was renamed "The Return of Maxwell Smart".

4. In which environment would we encounter bread-crust bombs, core bombs, cow pie bombs and ribbon bombs?

Answer: In a volcanic eruption

Bread-crust bombs, core bombs, cow pie bombs and ribbon bombs are categories of volcanic bombs. A volcanic bomb is a mass of pyroclastic ejecta (molten rock), typically larger than 65mm or 2.5 inches which is ejected from a volcano during an eruption. Volcanic bombs can be thrown at incredible distances and often acquire aerodynamic shapes.

5. What was the name of the first US aircraft carrier to be sunk by a nuclear device during Operation Crossroads?

Answer: USS Saratoga CV-3

The Saratoga was built in the 1920s, a Lexington-class aircraft carrier. The ship entered service in 1928 with the Pacific Fleet. The Saratoga and the Lexington were used to practice tactical maneuvers before WWII. More then once, these practice sessions successfully 'attacked' Pearl Harbor. The Saratoga was struck by a Japanese torpedo in the early 1940s and after repairs, her aircraft went on to sink the Ryujo, a light Japanese carrier. The Saratoga was torpedoed again in 1942 during the Eastern Solomons Battle and again repaired. The ship provided assistance and defense during several campaigns in WWII before becoming a training ship. The Saratoga was a dedicated night fighter carrier in the Battle of Iwo Jima, but was badly damaged by kamikazis. After more costly repairs she was again used as a training ship until mid 1946 when she became a target during Operation Crossroads when nuclear tests were conducted. She survived the first bombing but succumbed to the second, and was sunk.

6. The U.S. dropped two atomic bombs over Japan, effectively ending the war. We remember Mark 3 "Fat Man" (Nagasaki) and Mark 1 "Little Boy" (Hiroshima). There was also a Mark 2, but it was cancelled in 1944. What was its name?

Answer: Thin Man

Mark 2 was a plutonium gun design; Implosion Mark2, "Thin Man", was also a Manhattan Project plutonium implosion weapon, also cancelled in 1944. Bombs before 1968 were designated with 'Mk' (Mark numbers) and after 1968 with B as the prefix for Bomb. Warheads were classified as 'W'. The W53 warhead corresponded to the B53 nuclear bomb.

As weapons technology advanced, many weapons were cancelled in favor of lighter and/or faster newly developed ones. TX/Mark 14 was the first deployable solid-fuel thermonuclear bomb. Only five were produced. TX/Mark 16 also had only five produced and was the only cryogenic weapon ever deployed. B83 is a nuclear bomb currently in service. There are thousands more. Russia at the height of its nuclear weapons arsenal had about 45,000 in its stockpile compared to about 32,000 for the U.S. during the same period.

China, India, U.K., France and other nations have even more to add to this lethal list. But setting off only one nuclear device against another country will get them all 'bursting in air'.

7. Here's a 1998 'bomb' from Australia. Do you recall the name of this epic 'turkey' starring Jason Robards that names a brightly colored pet bird?

Answer: The Real Macaw

Production cost was about $5 million, and box office by early 21st century around $742,000.
Written by Matthew Perry and Bruce Hancock, this film tells the story of a very old royal blue and yellow macaw who tells an elderly man the location of a buried treasure from its days as a pirate's buddy. Jason Robards, John Goodman (one of the voices of Mac, the macaw) and Deborra-Lee Furness head the cast of this corny tale, at this writing not yet rated by 'Rotten Tomato'. Apparently many people claim to have liked the film. Recovery of the treasure will keep the elderly dude from being put in a nursing home so his evil family can sell his home. It's a must-see, feel-good flick. IF you can find it.

8. Headed out to party you might hear, "Hey man, let's get bombed!" If you do, your speech will slur, you may fall down, and you'll be embarrassingly clumsy. Dopamine levels rise, the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate is inhibited, and the effects of what inhibitory neurotransmitter are increased, by drinking alcohol?

Answer: Gamma-aminobutyric acid

GABA or Gamma-aminobutyric acid increases when people drink, causing imbalance, sluggishness and slurred speech. It's the dopamine that makes getting "bombed" feel good. At least until morning. The wrong answers are terms in the biology of liver, sugar, and plant synthesis.

10. The only 'bombs' connected to the title character were attempts to make film-length features. What would you serve this orange catty comic character on June 19th (or any other day)?

Answer: Lasagna

Garfield's birthday is June 19, 1978 (when the strip first appeared). By 1981, it was the world's most syndicated comic strip. Reaping from millions to billions in sales of related items and merchandise, Garfield is known around the world. Created by Jim Davis, Garfield is named for Davis' grandfather. Films and stage productions have not prospered as well as expected; in fact the first film was a bomb and the second did not do much better.

The chubby orange cat has history: born in the kitchen of an Italian restaurant in Muncie, IN, Garfield grew up eating enormous servings of pasta, pizza and other luscious delights, his favorite being lasagna. He is not always a nice kitty, often tormenting his owner, Jon, and Jon's dog, Odie. But he is a lovable rascal and has a very strong following.
