Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We know that Elvis Presley loved cars. When he became famous and had enough money, he bought the following twice in a row.

Answer: Pink Cadillac

In December of 1954, he bought his first pink Cadillac but it caught fire and was destroyed. In 1955, he purchased another but his fans now knew that he drove the pink Cadillac and mobbed him every time he went out. In desperation, he gave the car to his parents but they couldn't drive it either as they were mobbed as well.
2. As a precursor to manned space flight, many animals were launched into space unsuccessfully - even the unfortunate "Laika", a Siberian Husky the Russians sent up on Sputnik 2 in 1957. She died a few days after entering orbit as her life support system failed. In 1959, the Americans prepared to send two primates into space - "Able", a seven pound Rhesus monkey and "Baker", a one pound squirrel monkey. Finally, in Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA, they were launched into space. What sex were the monkeys?

Answer: Female

They reached a speed of 10,000 miles per hour and an altitude of 300 miles. On the re-entry, the nose cone temperature was 5,000 degrees F. The capsule splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean 1,500 miles away from the launch site. The nose cone containing Able and Baker was sighted and retrieved.

Not only were Able and Baker alive, they were in excellent health. Poor Able died three days after the flight when the sensor that had been placed under the skin was being removed and she had a fatal reaction to the anesthesia. Baker lived until November, 1984 until she passed away at the age of 27 which is about 3 times the life expectancy of a squirrel monkey.

She is buried close to the front entrance of the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama and is honored with a five foot granite memorial citing her birth and death dates along with her role in history.
3. During the Renaissance of Europe, a medication was made from which of the following:

Answer: Ground up mummies

Just a small dose, it was said, could cure any of a host of ailments; poisoning, incontinence, migraines, abcesses, giddiness, paralysis, fractures, internal ulcers, contusions, scorpion stings and vertigo. It tasted terrible. It brought on horrid heart pains and churned up the stomach to cause vomiting.

It was also very expensive but the wealthy upper class in Europe swore by the drug!
4. Oh, let's do another one on "The King". In December of 1956, Elvis Presley purchased another car. This time, it was a white Cadillac Eldorado Baritz. He drove it just over a year and had it repainted in what color?

Answer: Purple

He was speaking to his Aunt Lorraine at Graceland about what color he was going to paint his car and he picked up a bunch of purple grapes. He lifted his arm and smashed the grapes down on the pristine white hood. Then he said to her, "That's the color I want it to be." He decided he needed a new car a year later so he traded the Eldorado.

A fan of his with some inside information picked up the Eldorado and drove it until 1964. It was then parked in a backyard shed and ended up in an open field exposed to the weather and vandals who scribbled graffiti on it.

In 1976, the car was purchased by a couple from Columbus, Georgia who bought it at auction for $975 and spent $30,000 in restoring and repainting the car purple. The couple intended to show the restored car to Elvis as a surprise but just before the restoration was completed, Elvis died at the age of 42.
5. Do polar bears eat penguins?

Answer: No

Polar bears live in the North and penguins live in the South. Chances of them meeting up in order for one to be dinner for the other is not likely.
6. Is it possible to get a disease such as cholera from a body taken from the grave two or three months after death?

Answer: No

The grave is an inhospitable place for organisms - even the bad kind. Most die within a month because they need a certain temperature, acidity (or lack of acidity) and a certain chemical environment. In the case of cholera, the bacterium "Vibrio Cholerae" can live only four to seven days outside the body.

In dead bodies, it can only be found in the gut. Once the moisture is gone, the bacterium is gone. Scientists recently announced that they are going to study the frozen corpses of the polar explorers that were killed by the 1918 flu epidemic.

It is unknown if some of the disease causing organisms may have survived.
7. You and two other men are on a space walk while tethered to the capsule out in space. One of the men has not been acting quite right when suddenly you see him moving up behind the third man and it appears that he is going to tear away the life support. You must act. Would it be possible to shoot him?

Answer: Yes

If this ever happens to you, just keep in mind that you need to be on a spacewalk - you don't need a bullet hole in the space capsule. But then what about the recoil of the gun? To explain the answer - a gun fired in space should work as well as it would on Earth or possibly even better.

The explosion that gets the bullet going will work well even without air because gunpowder contains its own oxidizing agent, saltpeter (KNO3). The laws of physics will apply in space. The path of the bullet should be fairly straight as gravity is greatly reduced.
8. Have you ever noticed ants traveling in a line? What is their main method of communication with each other?

Answer: Chemical

In a typical worker ant, more than ten organs have been implicated in producing just one class of chemical signal. However, a typical ant colony operates with about 10-20 signals - most of them chemical. Special activities such as exchange of special eggs and anal secretions are also methods of communications.
9. Only one of these stars is a four-time Academy Awards winner. Which one?

Answer: Katharine Hepburn

Ms. Hepburn scored for her "Morning Glory" in 1933, "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" in 1967, "The Lion in Winter" in 1968 and "On Golden Pond" in 1981.

The other three great stars listed have all won three times.
10. Jack Nicholson - he is truly a fine, fine actor. In Stephen King's "The Shining", a family spends a haunted winter in a Rocky Mountain hotel as caretakers and Jack's character gets crazier every day. What was the name of the hotel?

Answer: Overlook Hotel

It is interesting to note that Stephen King was not pleased with the movie version of his hit novel. He later worked in making a TV version of "The Shining" which was much more to his liking. Many people prefer the second version - but alas, it doesn't have Jack Nicholson!
