Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the day marking a special event that occurred on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918?

Answer: Armistice Day

This date marks the armistice that was signed between the Allies and Germans to mark the cessation of World War One hostilities. The ceasefire, however, only took place on the Western Front. Parts of the Ottoman Empire and Russian Empire continued to fight for some time after. Today this date is celebrated as a national holiday in many of the old allied nations from that period of history.

After the second world war the name was changed to Remembrance Day in the countries of the British Commonwealth, and to Veterans Day in America.
2. What is the order of the priesthood of the Latter Day Saints church known as?

Answer: Quorum of the Twelve

This was established by the founder of the LDS movement, Joseph Smith, when he was initially organising the church hierarchy. It is patterned after the twelve apostles of the early Christian church, with its members believed to be today's apostles. Their work includes not only assisting in the church's supreme governing work, but also acting as evangelical ambassadors throughout the world.

Their more official title is the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. When a President of the church passes away, the Quorum become the supreme body of the church until they have ordained a new President to take his place.
3. Thirteen is the age that people from a spooky certain group begin to learn their trade. Which group is this?

Answer: Witches

Witches are those who use supernatural or magical means to achieve their goals. In the middle ages, it was believed that they were in league with the devil and many women, accused of being witches, were persecuted as a result. So-called witches were also blamed if anything went wrong in a community, such as a crop failure or an unexpected death - and further persecution followed.

The sad thing is that many of the women accused of witchcraft were old, infirm, widowed or had never wed. They were scratching out a living by selling herbs and spices and natural cures for various afflictions.

They also were a drain on the charitable resources of a community and it was all too tempting to accuse them of being witches instead - thereby removing this drain.
4. There are fourteen lines in which form of poetry?

Answer: Sonnet

The word sonnet derives from an Italian word meaning "little song", and sonnets are ideal to shift from the poetic to the musical form. William Shakespeare wrote some of the most beautiful and heartbreaking sonnets even written, some 154 in all. If you ever have time to sit down and read these, it truly is worth it.

Some were written to a woman who annoyed him but whom he loved. Several more were written, as was the courtly fashion of the day, to a young man of birth, urging him to marry and continue his line. Others were written, weeping, on the passing of time and having to say goodbye to life and love. The latter are the most exquisite, sonnet number 73 in particular. If that is recited aloud with the appropriate pauses, and with soft, sad music playing in the background - pan pipes are ideal - it is a completely moving experience.
5. Fifteen players per team are on the field during which ball game?

Answer: Rugby Union

This game, about which I know absolutely nothing, originated in England in the early nineteenth century in an old established school called Rugby School. It's played between two teams trying to get an egg-shaped ball between posts at either end of a field.

A popular international game, countries vie every four years in an international competition for the Webb Ellis cup, for the right to be called the world championship team. Its first written laws were drawn up by the pupils themselves in 1848. I wonder if one of those laws included "No homework on match days"?
6. Who was the female star in the 1984 film "Sixteen Candles"?

Answer: Molly Ringwald

Molly plays an awkward teenager named Samantha just trying to get through the day on her 16th birthday, and with a terrible crush on a senior (Jake) at her school. Her family has forgotten all about this coming of age for her because her sister is getting married the following day.

After a series of incidents during the day where everything goes wrong for her, the film concludes with Molly and Jake sharing a kiss over her birthday cake, adorned with its sixteen candles.
7. Seventeen is the usual number of syllables or phases in which short Japanese poetry form?

Answer: Haiku

Haiku is a very brief Japanese poem. Its seventeen syllables or phases of 5, 7 and 5 are also known as "on" or "morae" and it usually features a juxtaposition of two themes. Something along the following:

The eyes of nature
Smile as rain drips down green leaves
Hot tears fall on graves.
8. In Chinese tradition, the number eighteen is associated with which of the following choices?

Answer: Prosperity

For example, the eighteenth floor in high rise buildings in Southern China is usually the dearest to rent for those seeking to boost their chances of success. So it really does bring prosperity after all - for the owners anyhow. However, this doesn't apply to the eighteenth floor of buildings in Northern China.

There they believe one should steer clear of that floor because it is associated with the 18th level of hell - from which it is impossible to escape.
9. Which religion believes there are nineteen angels guarding hell?

Answer: Islam

This can be found in the Koran in surah 74:30 where, in reference to the angels standing guard, it states "Over it, is nineteen". The Koran is the most important religious work in the Islamic faith. They believe that the words contained there are spoken directly by God to Muhammad. It has the same importance to that faith as the Bible does to those following the Christian faith.
10. Twenty20 is an exciting and fast moving recent version of which well known international sport?

Answer: Cricket

Twenty20 is a really limited over game in cricket. It's much faster moving than standard cricket which has test matches that are usually played over several days, or the faster one-day matches which last an average of fifty overs per team. The Twenty20 game, over in about three hours, zooms along, with the crowds going wild with excitement. Compared to the test matches, it can be likened to the difference between a speedboat and a rowboat.
