Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which character in Douglas Adams' "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" saves Arthur Dent's life first and repeatedly?

Answer: Ford Prefect

Ford Prefect is a Betelgeusian field researcher for "The Guide" who spent time on Earth because he favoured the beer. He rescues Arthur from Earth's demolition to make room for a hyperspace bypass being constructed by Vogons. Ford is about two hundred years old.

His original plan was to spend a week on Earth to update the (minor, brief) reference in "The Guide" but he was stranded there for fifteen years.
2. On the TV series "Leave it to Beaver," who was Theodore "Beaver" Cleaver's closest friend and sidekick?

Answer: Larry Mondello

Beaver's dearest pal (except when they are feuding) is Larry Mondello, an overweight kid portrayed by Robert "Rusty" Stevens. Larry usually has a candy bar or piece of fruit in his hand. They are in the same grade at Grant Avenue Grammar School and were both forced to become students in Miss Spencer's School of the Dance.
3. "The Great Mouse Detective" (1986) is an imaginative animated remake of Sherlock Holmes. Who is the equivalent of Dr. John Watson?

Answer: Major Dr. David Q. Dawson

The premise of "The Great Mouse Detective" is that there is a parallel society of rodents in Victorian London. One of these is Basil of Baker Street, a renowned detective. His companion is Major Dr. David Q. Dawson, recently returned from service to Her Majesty in Afghanistan. The name Basil derives from Basil Rathbone who played Sherlock Holmes in many black-and-white movies. Like Watson in the Arthur Conan Doyle stories, Dawson is the narrator of the film.
4. In the Old Testament, David son of Jesse formed a friendship with the son of King Saul which was historic. Who was that sidekick who deferred the crown to his friend?

Answer: Jonathan

As King Saul's son, Jonathan should have inherited the crown. But God caused Samuel to anoint David as the next king. Jonathan chose friendship over family. "And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul." (I Samuel 18:1 KJV)
5. Dick Dastardly and his sidekick first appeared in "Wacky Races" (1968-1969) and then "In Their Flying Machines" (1969-1970). Who was Dastardly's companion?

Answer: Muttley

Hanna- Barbera introduced Dastardly and Muttley as auto racers who cheat to win in road races around North America. Then they appeared in "Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines" where their goal was to intercept Yankee Doodle Pigeon, a carrier pigeon who bore secret messages. Muttley was a mixed-breed dog with a wheezy snicker who was motivated to win medals for his war-time accomplishments.
6. The green animated-clay figure Gumby has entertained American audiences on two television series and a feature-length movie. What is his orange-clay companion called?

Answer: Pokey

Gumby started out as Art Clokey's film school project at USC. From there, Gumby (and his sidekick Pokey the horse) became a franchise. Other characters include Nopey the dog, Prickles the dinosaur, Goo the mermaid, Gumbo his father and Gumba his mother. These are all vexed by the Blockheads, two horrible creatures who cause nothing but trouble.
7. Boy detective Leroy "Encyclopedia" Brown is assisted in his detective agency business by what best friend and bodyguard?

Answer: Sally Kimball

Sally Kimball is as strong and athletic as Encyclopedia Brown is smart. In Donald Sobol's series of 29 novels (1963-2012), the relationship between Encyclopedia and Sally is that of partners and sidekicks. While Encyclopedia solves most of the mysteries, Sally sometimes steps forward and take the investigative lead herself.

The series begat a comic strip, a television programme and books of puzzles and games.
8. In the Margery Allingham novels and short stories about Albert Campion, who was his unattractive and uncouth manservant?

Answer: Magersfontein Lugg

Allingham began writing stories about Albert Campion, an aristocrat who used a pseudonym to investigate crimes, in 1929. Her last was completed posthumously by her husband in 1968. Campion's sidekick Lugg is a "retired" burglar who connects his employer with many underworld characters.

In the 1989-1990 BBC television series based on the Campion stories, Lugg was played by Brian Glover, a former professional wrestler.
9. Doctor Ben Casey, played on Sixties television by Vince Edwards, was a young surgeon whose close friend and elder mentor was __________.

Answer: Dr. David Zorba

"Ben Casey" premiered in 1961 and played on ABC in prime time until 1966. Young Dr. Casey was guided by grey-bearded Dr. David Zorba in the first five seasons; he was replaced by Dr. Daniel Niles Freeland played by Franchot Tone in the last season. Dr. Maggie Graham was played by Bettye Ackerman who was actually married to Sam Jaffe, who played Dr. Zorba.

The show was the basis for a newspaper comic strip, Dell comic books, four paperback novels, and a made-for-TV movie "The Return of Ben Casey" (1968).
10. Captain James T. Kirk is assisted by a science officer and first officer who is a Vulcan-human hybrid. Who is this friend?

Answer: Mister Spock

Mister Spock is as loyal a compatriot as any space explorer could want. His father was Vulcan and his mother human, leaving him torn between the emotionless Vulcan way of logical living and the emotional human way. The relationship between the two men is summed up in the movie "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" where Spock lies dying and says to Kirk: "I have been and always shall be your friend." Leonard Nimoy played this part on television as well as on film. As he would say "Dif-tor heh smusma" which is Vulcan for "Live long and prosper."
