Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the original television series "Star Trek" (1966-1969), who was Captain Kirk's ship's surgeon and sidekick?

Answer: Dr. Leonard McCoy

Captain Kirk had two crew members who were his close friends as well as his sidekicks: the Vulcan science officer Mr. Spock and the ship's medical officer Dr. McCoy. These two tended to quibble and yet to balance one another. The Captain called Dr. McCoy "Bones" which is a reference to a nickname for battlefield surgeons in the American Civil war who amputated limbs by "sawing bones."
2. Fess Parker (who played Davy Crockett in the Disney series) portrayed Daniel Boone on NBC-TV from 1964-1970. Who was his faithful (and fictitious) Indian companion?

Answer: Mingo

"Daniel Boone" was a popular entry in the NBC line-up. Ed Ames co-starred with Fess Parker in the role of Boone's Cherokee companion Mingo. Ames' character was of a well-educated and well-spoken Native American, in contrast to the "me want-um go now" stereotypes which were common at the time. Retired New York Giants' defensive tackle Rosey Grier played Gabe Cooper, a recurring character.
3. In Robert Redford's 2000 movie, an alcoholic and unpracticed former golfer is restored to love and life by a caddy who appears mysteriously and coaches him. Who was that caddy?

Answer: Bagger Vance

"The Legend of Bagger Vance" didn't receive many favourable reviews but was a sweet film about redemption and restoration, anyway. In a sense, it was based on a Hindu sacred story in which a warrior named Arjuna is restored by the god Krishna appearing as Bhagavan.

In the film Bagger appears to Rannulph Junuh. Will Smith, Matt Damon, Charlize Theron and Jack Lemmon star. The sound track is outstanding, including numbers by Fats Waller, Muggsy Spanier and Duke Ellington.
4. The Old Testament prophet Jeremiah dictated his oracles (twice!) to an amanuensis or scribe who wrote them in a scroll. Who was this friend of Jeremiah who wrote his words in a book?

Answer: Baruch

It is recorded in Jeremiah 36:4 "Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah: and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD, which he had spoken unto him, upon a roll of a book." (KJV) The prophet dictated his prophecies and King Jehoiakim had them burned so Jeremiah dictated them again.

The two men endured the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem in 587-586 BC and were deported together to Egypt.
5. George of the Jungle has a girlfriend named Ursula and an elephant named Shep but who is his closest friend and companion?

Answer: Ape

Alas, poor George. Based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' character Tarzan, George of the Jungle is less adept, less skilled, less the master of his arboraceous environment. Thus the theme song "George, George, George of the Jungle ... Watch out for that tree" sung just as he swings face-first on a vine into a tree. His companion is an ape named Ape.
6. Working out of an office next door to Dean Martin's nightclub on Sunset Strip, detectives Stu Bailey and Jeff Spencer were assisted by a valet parking attendant at Dino's who aspired to be a P.I. himself. Who was this hipster heartthrob?

Answer: Gerald Lloyd "Kookie" Kookson III

Kookie, played by Edd Byrnes, moved rapidly from being a supporting character to being a major player in "77 Sunset Strip" (1958-1964). His trademark move of combing his hair led to his first singing recording "Kookie, Kookie, Lend me your comb." He left the show briefly and returned as a full partner in the private detective agency.
7. Big-band leader Phil Harris had a musician-sidekick on his radio programme; who was this loveable ne'er-do-well, alcoholic, woman-chasing left-handed guitar player?

Answer: Frankie Remley

Phil Harris was the bandleader on the Jack Benny radio programme. He and wife Alice Faye were hired away to co-host "The Fitch Bandwagon" in 1946. This became "The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show" in 1948. Harris would get into trouble when his hard-drinking musician pal Frankie Remley would tell him about some guy he knew and the difficulties would flow from there.
8. Monsieur Pamplemousse investigates mysteries while rating French restaurants for the prestigious Le Guide. Who is his faithful canine companion in these pursuits?

Answer: Pommes Frits

Both Monsieur Pamplemousse and his faithful canine companion Pommes Frits are former members of the Sûreté, expelled for amorous reasons. In the 21 novels, written by Thomas Michael Moore (the creator and author of the Paddington Bear series of children's books), there is a perfect mixture of gastronomy, mystery and risque humour.
9. Captain Midnight (originally U.S. Army pilot Captain Jim "Red" Albright) led the Secret Squadron on American radio from 1938 to 1949. A television version aired from 1954 to 1956. Who was the chief mechanic of the Secret Squadron and sidekick to Captain Midnight?

Answer: Ichabod "Ikky" Mudd

The "Captain Midnight" programme was originally sponsored by Skelly Oil but is better remembered (both on radio and television) as being sponsored by Ovaltine. Most of its radio time was spent on the Mutual Radio Network. Aerial daredevil and war hero Captain Midnight was assisted by Ichabod "Ikky" Mudd. Most of the supporting cast was dropped when the series moved to television but Ikky was retained for comic relief.
10. Rocket "Rocky" J. Squirrel hosted a variety show on American network TV (1959-1964) which included Dudley Do-Right, Fractured Fairy Tales, Peabody's Improbable History, Aesop & Son, and Mr. Know-It-All. Who was his cervine sidekick?

Answer: Bullwinkle J. Moose

Rocky and Bullwinkle are roommates in their home town of Frostbite Falls, Minnesota. They are often engaged in foiling the fiendish plots of spies Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale, agents of the Fearless Leader of Pottsylvania. Narrators on the television programme included Hans Conried, William Conrad, Edward Everett Horton and Charlie Ruggles.
