Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Harry Potter meets and rescues a new female student at Hogwarts in JK Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (UK, 1997) or "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (US, 1998). Who is this student who returns the favour more than once in the novels/movies to follow?

Answer: Hermione Granger

Hermione is a better student than Harry, has a more encyclopedic knowledge of magic than does Harry, and is perhaps more quick-witted than the hero. Early odds were that Harry and Hermione would end up together but, as the larger story unfolded, it became progressively clearer than Hermione and Ron Weasley were fated for romance.

The character is a muggle, the daughter of two non-magic dentists.
2. Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor hosts a television programme within a television programme in the ABC-TV sitcom "Home Improvement." Who is his long-suffering sidekick on the show within the show: "Tool Time"?

Answer: Al Borland

"Home Improvement" ran eight seasons (1991-1999) and launched the careers of both Tim Allen, the lead, and Pamela Anderson, who played the Binford (brand) Tool-Time Girl for the first three seasons. Al was the much-maligned, underappreciated, enduring assistant who played the DIY show straight while the Tool Man ran to extremes. Borland was played by Richard Karn who was born in Seattle, Washington, where he was graduated from Roosevelt High School and the University of Washington.
3. In "Big Trouble in Little China" (1986), Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) thinks himself the heroic leader while, in truth, it is his sidekick, seeking to rescue his fiancée, who is the true hero. Who is he?

Answer: Wang Chi (Dennis Dun)

Director John Carpenter attempted to invert the standard American adventure plot in which a Caucasian protagonist saves the day with a little help from his humble minority sidekick. Jack Burton is not the classic hero whereas Wang Chi fights like a dragon and rescues his fiancée from evil kidnappers.
4. In Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," who is Oberon's jester and servant and accomplice and sprite?

Answer: Puck

Puck, also known as Robin Goodfellow in this play and in English folklore, was a supernatural being (without gender) who was mischievous to mortals. He was employed by Oberon, King of the Fairies, as a court jester. He and Bottom hold the three strands of this play together, being the only characters who appear in all three parts.
5. A feckless delivery boy in the 30th Century shares an apartment with an alcoholic cigar-smoking robot in "Futurama." Name the robot.

Answer: Bender

Philip J. Fry was accidentally cryogenically frozen in 1999 and awoke in the 30th Century. His roommate is Bender Bending Rodriguez, a robot with a propensity to larceny. Although the two are friends, Fry once had Bender's male antenna removed because it interfered with TV reception.
6. When Michael Knight's face was shot off, his life was saved by Knight Industries and he was given a sentient automobile as his crime-fighting partner. Who was the car?

Answer: KITT

David Hasselhoff played Michael Arthur Long (renamed Michael Knight after his near death) in "Knight Rider". His companion was KITT which stood for Knight Industries Two Thousand. The car, which conversed with its driver, was voiced by William Daniels who was, at the time, starring as Dr. Mark Craig on "St. Elsewhere." He was not credited as the voice of the 1982 Pontiac Trans Am but his voice was so distinctive that it didn't fool anybody.
7. In James Fenimore Cooper's "Leatherstocking Tales," who was Natty Bumppo's Mohican foster-brother and sidekick?

Answer: Chingachgook

Nathaniel "Natty" Bumppo was the central figure in the "Leatherstocking Tales" which comprise five novels: "The Deerslayer", "The Last of the Mohicans", "The Pathfinder", "The Pioneers" and "The Prairie". Natty Bumppo was born to white parents but raised by Delaware Indians.

His foster-brother and constant companion was Chingachgook. The name Chingachgook is from the Unami language (one of the Algonquian groups) spoken by the Lenpape people of modern Delaware. In that language, it means "big snake" in the positive sense of being wise as a serpent.
8. In Cormac McCarthy's 1992 novel "All the Pretty Horses," who teams up with John Grady Cole to look for work as a cowboy in 1949 Mexico?

Answer: Lacey Rawlins

The death of 16-year-old John Grady Cole's grandfather disrupts his world and launches him and his best friend Lacey Rawlins on an adventure. McCarthy won the U.S. National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award for "All the Pretty Horses." This novel was the first of three which form the "Border Trilogy." Billy Bob Thornton directed the 2000 movie.
9. Detective Sergeant Joe Friday appeared in movies, on television and, originally, on radio. Who was Friday's first partner on the radio series?

Answer: Sgt. Ben Romero

The creator and star of "Dragnet" was Jack Webb. His first partner was Ben Romero played by Barton Yarborough. He was replaced on radio by Ed Jacobs played by Barney Phillips. Frank Smith was the third partner on radio and then on television; he was played by Herbert Ellis and then by Ben Alexander.

The last (1960s) partner was Bill Gannon played by Harry Morgan who went on to play Colonel Sherman T. Potter on "M*A*S*H" (1975-1983).
10. In connection with Rocky and Bullwinkle, Mister Peabody is a super-intelligent dog with an adopted seven-year-old human son. What is the boy's name?

Answer: Sherman

Mister Peabody is a successful businessman, inventor, Nobel laureate, expert chef and Olympic medalist. He adopted Sherman, an orphan, to combat his own loneliness. The pair appeared in the 50s and 60s cartoons, as well as in their own movie (2014) and a 2015 TV series on Netflix. Using the WABAC (pronounced "way back") time machine, Peabody teaches Sherman history.
