Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the play, the novel and the movies about Peter Pan, who is the fairy who is his companion and sometimes assistant?

Answer: Tinker Bell

J.M. Barrie's original conception of Tinker Bell was that she was a tinker -- someone who repaired pots and pans and kettles and such. The character has evolved over time until she is something of a co-star to Peter Pan and a leading character in the panoply of Walt Disney princesses. Sometimes portrayed by no more than a flashlight beam splayed about the stage, Tink was played by Julia Roberts in the 1991 movie "Hook."
2. In the TV series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997-2003), who is Buffy's best female friend and member of the Scoobies?

Answer: Willow

Alyson Hannigan played the role of Willow Rosenberg, a shy and unconfident young woman, who becomes a witch and grows toward maturity. Hannigan picked up a role as the host(ess) of the Penn and Teller television show "Fool Us."
3. In Mel Brooks' whacky movie "Spaceballs" (1987), mercenary Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) is assisted by a mog -- half man and half dog -- played by John Candy. What is the mog's name?

Answer: Barf

"Barf" is short for Barfolomew. Starr and Barf are sent to stop an evil plot to steal the fresh air of Planet Druidia. The film parodies "Planet of the Apes," "Star Wars," "Star Trek" and "The Wizard of Oz." To speak like one the characters in the film, say "May The Schwartz Be With You."
4. In the Old Testament, of the twelve men Moses sent to scout the Land of Canaan, only Joshua and his sidekick gave a report encouraging invasion. Who was that companion?

Answer: Caleb

Joshua the son of Nun was of the tribe of Ephraim. Caleb the son of Jephunneh was of the tribe of Judah. Joshua and Caleb reported a land rich in natural resources and easy to invade and conquer. All the others said it was occupied by giants who would easily repel an invasion. Caleb stuck by Joshua throughout his leadership career.
5. King Leonardo (the Lion) was assisted in governing his Short Subjects by a sidekick in his 1960-1963 American television cartoon programme. Who was the wise coadjutant who helped him rule the kingdom of Bongo Congo?

Answer: Odie O. Cologne

Odie O. Cologne was a skunk who was the childhood friend of King Leonardo and the real brains behind the intelligent and beneficent administration of Bongo Congo. The pair was constantly vexed by the king's brother Itchy, by Biggie Rat, by evil Professor Messer or by equally evil Mr. Mad.
6. In both the Earl Stanley Gardner mystery novels and the CBS-TV series, who was Perry Mason's private-detective sidekick?

Answer: Paul Drake

Earl Stanley Gardner created private-eye Paul Drake to do the legwork for criminal defense attorney Perry Mason. When the mystery novels were converted into a television series in 1957, William Hopper auditioned for the role of Perry Mason and also for the role of Paul Drake. Raymond Burr won the top role.

The programme played until 1966. Hopper was the son of Hollywood columnist Hedda Hopper. His last performance was in the movie "Myra Breckinridge" (1970) which opened after his death from a stroke.
7. Huck Finn rafts down the Mississippi River in "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" (1884), in whose good company?

Answer: Jim

The thirteen-year-old Huck is partnered with the older Jim, an escaped slave. The sequel to "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" is narrated by Huck himself. Jim proves to be wise, parental, spiritually awake and non-violent. Although the book itself is anti-racist, the author's frequent and consistent use of a now deeply frowned on racial term has been the subject of intense debate in the 21st Century.
8. Agatha Christie's Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is often assisted by an ex-military man who serves as narrator for several of the novels. Who is this sidekick?

Answer: Captain Arthur Hastings

Often compared to the relationship between Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes, the friendship between Arthur Hastings and Poirot is between unequals. Where Poirot is brilliant, Hastings is plodding and prosaic. As a literary figure, Hastings functions as the Everyman who asks the questions in the reader's mind of the great detective.
9. In the James Bond novels (both Ian Fleming's and those which followed), who was the CIA agent who was Bond's American friend and sidekick?

Answer: Felix Leiter

Felix Leiter was introduced in "Casino Royale" and appeared in six of the original James Bond novels. His role as a CIA agent was truncated by a shark attack in Fleming's second novel, "Live and Let Die" which cost his hand and a leg. He thereafter worked for the Pinkerton Detective Agency.

His name was made up of parts of the names of Fleming's friends. In a 2002 article, the New York Times called Leiter James Bond's "sidekick."
10. "On again, off again" describes the relationship between singer-songwriter Paul Simon and his musical partner for such hits as "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "The Sound of Silence" and "Mrs. Robinson." Who is the frizzy-haired sidekick?

Answer: Art Garfunkel

Simon & Garfunkel won ten Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Too bad they couldn't get along well enough to stay together longer. Despite numerous reunions, the pair's history is one of disagreement and estrangement. One of their more famous reunions was "The Concert in Central Park" in 1981.
