Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bertram Wilberforce "Bertie" Wooster is the first-person narrator of numerous novels and short stories by P.G. Wodehouse. Who is the gentleman's gentleman in charge who saves him and his idle-rich friends from all manner of troubles?

Answer: Jeeves

Versed in literature, the aristocracy, culinary arts, etiquette, Shakespeare, horse racing, bartending and romance, Jeeves is able to masterfully extract Bertie and his friends from seemingly-impossible entanglements, while remaining in the background.

The manner in which Jeeves has brilliantly saved the day is hidden from Bertie until the last act, in which all is revealed. The pair has been depicted in print, on radio, in television series and on film. C. Northcote Parkinson wrote a "biography" of Jeeves entitled "Jeeves: A Gentleman's Personal Gentleman" (1979).
2. In the first season (1976-77) of the NBC TV series "Baa Baa Black Sheep," who was Major Greg "Pappy" Boyington's XO and sidekick?

Answer: Capt. Jim Gutterman played by James Whitmore, Jr.

This two-season action-adventure series followed the exploits of Greg "Pappy" Boyington and his Black Sheep Squadron fighting World War II in the Pacific in their fighter aircraft. The programme was (loosely) based on the real-life exploits of Major Boyington, who served as consultant to the show. Whitmore played Pappy's executive officer in the first season but was replaced by Marine Captain Larry Casey in the second.
3. Klaatu is accompanied on his mission to earth by a giant robot who responds to the message "Klaatu barada nikto." Who is this robot companion?

Answer: Gort

"The Day the Earth Stood Still" was made twice: in 1951 with Michael Rennie and in 2008 with Keanu Reeves. In both versions, Gort is a robot with remarkable powers to destroy offensive weapons. The message of the film is pacifist: that the Earth has used weaponry irresponsibly and will not be allowed to export its violence into space.

The sentence "Klaatu barada nikto" also occurs in the films "Army of Darkness" (1992), "Tron" (1982), and "Toys" (1992).
4. According to an ancient Greek Legend, Pythias was sentenced to death by King Dionysius I of Syracuse and left his friend as a hostage in his place so he could say goodbye to his family. Who was that friend?

Answer: Damon

According to the story told by at least four ancient Greek authors, Pythias left Damon in Dionysius' custody and did indeed return to face the death sentence instead of Damon. The king was so amazed that Pythias returned that he pardoned them both. The story was the basis for a 1564 play by Richard Edwards, a 1914 silent movie and a 1962 Hollywood movie.
5. In the animated TV series, Top Cat and his gang of homeless alley cats live in Hoagy's Alley in Manhattan. Who is his lieutenant and sidekick in crime, based on Stubby Kaye's character in "Guys and Dolls" Nicely Nicely Johnson?

Answer: Benny the Ball

"Top Cat" was a Hanna-Barbera series which ran on ABC 1961-1962, which led to three made-for-TV movies, books, comic books and even ViewMaster reels. The down-and-out cats were always looking for a way to make a fast buck and were foiled by Officer Dibble. The rotund Benny the Ball was voiced by Maurice Gosfield who played Private Duane Doberman on "The Phil Silvers Show" -- a similar character.
6. In the classic American television comedy "The Honeymooners," bus driver Ralph Kramden played opposite which sewer-worker sidekick?

Answer: Ed Norton

"The Honeymooners" was created by Jackie Gleason in 1955 and, although the series ended in 1956, continued to appear as a sketch on other Gleason shows until 1978. Ralph Kramden's gangly arm-flapping somewhat doofus sidekick was Ed Norton (no relation to the modern film actor) played by Art Carney. Norton was married to Trixie and lived upstairs from the Kramdens, Ralph and Alice. Ralph repeatedly throws him out of their apartment.
7. In the video game series "Donkey Kong," who was the spider monkey who appeared as Donkey Kong's sidekick starting in the 1994 game Donkey Kong Country?

Answer: Diddy Kong

Diddy Kong is definitely a spider monkey, although literature produced by Nintendo occasionally calls him a chimpanzee. He is younger than Kong and wears a distinctive outfit: a red ball-cap adorned with the Nintendo logo, and a red shirt bearing two stars. The name "Diddy" was chosen because, in British slang, the term means "small."
8. Clive Cussler has written numerous adventure novels, many of which feature Dirk Pitt as the protagonist. Pitt is usually accompanied by which Mediterranean sidekick?

Answer: Al Giordino

Pitt and Giordino were boyhood friends who attended kindergarten together, played high school football together, served in the Air Force together, and joined NUMA (the National Underwater and Marine Agency) together to share adventures in underwater exploration and combating villains. Giordino is a burly Italian, unmarried, who smokes cigars and drives a Corvette.
9. The story of Flash Gordon (and Dale Arden) is handled in various ways in newspaper comic strips, movie serials, radio broadcasts, feature-length films, comic books and television programmes. Who is the Eastern-European Jewish rocket scientist who helps Flash and Dale save the earth (mostly)?

Answer: Hans Zarkov

Dr. Hanz Zarkov (also known as Dr. Alexis Zarkov) escaped the Holocaust, then worked for the United State government. In some versions, he was quite mad. In others, he was evil but came around to the forces of good. In still others, he was always good. No matter, he was pitted against Ming the Merciless of Mongo which made him Flash Gordon's ally.
10. Yogi Bear appeared constantly with his smaller, younger and smarter companion. Who was that little bear?

Answer: Boo Boo

Yogi and Boo Boo got their start on "The Huckleberry Hound Show" in 1958; they earned their own programme in 1961. Boo Boo would attempt to steer Yogi from behaviour which will get him into trouble ... usually with little success. Boo Boo was voiced by Don Messick from the beginning. Messick died in 1997. Justin Timberlake voiced Boo Boo in the 2010 American 3D action-adventure movie "Yogi Bear."
