Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Miguel de Cervantes's Don Quixote has the perfect sidekick: loyal, devoted, not too bright but smarter than his master. Who is this paragon of Platonic partners?

Answer: Sancho Panza

Sancho Panza -- chubby, barely literate, simple but worldly wise -- serves both as Don Quixote's squire and as the literary foil by which Miguel de Cervantes comments on the absurdity of macho heroism in 17th Century Spain.
2. There were two principal sidekicks to Matt Dillon on "Gunsmoke"; who was the first one?

Answer: Chester

"Gunsmoke" ran on American radio from 1952 to 1961 starring William Conrad and on American television from 1955 to 1975 starring James Arness. Marshall Dillon was assisted by Chester (Chester Proudfoot on radio; Chester B. Goode on TV) played by Parley Baer on radio and by Dennis Weaver on television. Chester was never technically Marshall Dillon's deputy. He was replaced by Festus Haggen, played by country singer Ken Curtis, who played the part in 304 episodes over 11 years.
3. In the 2007 animated film "Ratatouille", a rat named Remy who wants to become a great chef enlists a garbage boy in a famous Parisian restaurant as his sidekick and cooks through him to achieve fame. Who is this non-rodent sidekick?

Answer: Linguini

Upon the death of master chef Auguste Gusteau, leadership of his restaurant is in flux, as Skinner, the former sous-chef takes over. Remy intervenes by hiding under Linguini's toque and pulling his hair to indicate what he wants him to do next. The film won Brad Bird the Academy Award for the Best Animated Feature of 2007.
4. Rosalind, the daughter of the banished duke, flees the court of her uncle, and takes the disguise of a man in the Forest of Arden. In Shakespeare's "As You Like It," who is her sidekick, the daughter of the usurping duke?

Answer: Celia

Celia and Rosalind are cousins but their affection for one another is more sisterly. She did not need to flee the court of Duke Frederick but accompanied her cousin (and the jester Touchstone) into the forest. Another character, LeBeau, describes Celia's love for Rosalind as "dearer than the natural bond of sisters." Because this is a Shakespeare comedy, both girls find and win true love by the last act.
5. Jonny Quest has been engaged in great adventures around the world since 1964. Who is his adoptive brother and sidekick?

Answer: Hadji

Jonny Quest and his father Dr. Benton Quest first met Hadji in Calcutta where he was an orphan in the street. Dr. Quest adopted Hadji and he became Jonny's best friend. Hadji is a Hindu, a yogi, and a judo expert, normally dressed in turban and Nehru jacket. The programme ran through three television series (1964-1965; 1986; and 1996-1997) and two made-for-TV movies.
6. On the original "Saved by the Bell" (NBC-TV, 1989-1993), heartthrob and all-around cool guy Zack Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) had which nerdy, oddly-dressed, science-and-chess obsessed sidekick?

Answer: Samuel "Screech" Powers

Screech was played by Dustin Diamond, who was younger than most of the rest of the cast, as a classic nerd. He was fiercely loyal to Zack which protected him from bullies and uplifted his social standing. Screech was unlucky in love throughout the series.

When the high-school-based series wrapped, Screech went along to California University with Zack and Slater as his roommates, "Saved by the Bell: The College Years" (1993-1994).
7. In Charles Dickens' "The Pickwick Papers," who is the servant, valet, sidekick and companion retained by Mr. Pickwick?

Answer: Sam Weller

Sam Weller is to Mister Pickwick and Sancho Panza is to Don Quixote. Although he does not appear until the tenth chapter of a 57 chapter novel, he is as important as the eponymous Mr. Pickwick. Sam is a sort of Cockney man of all trades -- bright, physically capable, scrappy, full of insight -- who is hired as a valet but becomes a companion.
8. Dorothy L. Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey is accompanied in many of his adventures by his valet, batman, gentleman's gentleman and friend. Who is this faithful and insightful servant?

Answer: Mervyn Bunter

Lord Peter was injured severely in the First World War. His batman Sgt. Mervyn Bunter accompanied him home, assisted in his recovery and remained his gentleman's gentleman in civilian life. Bunter addresses Wimsey as "My Lord" but maintains a relationship based on friendship as well as social role. Apt comparisons can be made between Bunter and P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves.
9. German professor Otto Lidenbrock and his nephew Axel are guided by a Danish-speaking Icelander in Jules Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (1864). Who is this rugged and handsome sidekick?

Answer: Hans Bjelke

Hans, an eiderduck hunter, guides Alex and the professor down into the Earth's interior through a passageway inside the Icelandic volcano Snæfellsjökull. After many adventures (including meeting dinosaurs), they resurface in southern Italy on Mount Stromboli in the Aeolian Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
10. In the "Harry Potter" Universe, who was the house elf freed from the Malfoy family's employ who saved Harry, Ron and Hermione (among others) and died from Bellatrix Lastrange's knife wound to his chest?

Answer: Dobby

While Dobby was elated to become a free elf, he missed a life of service and contracted with Dumbledore to work in the kitchens of Hogwarts. He disliked the Malfoys and therefor helped Harry spy on them. Harry was so moved by Dobby's death that he dug the elf's grave himself and buried him with an epitaph reading "Here lies Dobby, a free elf."
