Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the world created by Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain), who is Tom Sawyer's closest companion?

Answer: Huckleberry Finn

Tom and Huck are both alike in that they are orphans but are as different as can be in most other respects. Tom lives in a civilized home, loved, well dressed, schooled, shod and churched. Huck is homeless, abused, attired in hand-me-downs, truant, barefoot and irreligious. Tom and Huck appear in four completed novels and in three unfinished Twain works.
2. Dobie Gillis was the first American teenager to have the lead role in a television series. His romantic exploits were lightened by his close friend, a bongo-playing beatnik, averse to work, and deeply into jazz music. Who was this latter character, portrayed by Bob Denver?

Answer: Maynard G. Krebs

Bob Denver went on to star in the TV series "Gilligan's Island." "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" aired from 1959-1963 and was based on the short stories of Max Shulman. Shulman wrote the novel "Rally 'Round the Flag, Boys!" (on which the film was based), the Broadway play "The Tender Trap", and the script for the 1978 movie "House Calls" which became a TV series (1979-1982).
3. In the Disney version of "Mary Poppins," who is Mary's close friend and multi-talented sidekick?

Answer: Bert

Dick Van Dyke played the role of Bert, a Cockney with multiple occupations, e.g. one-man band, sidewalk chalk artist, chimney sweep and vendor of kites. The 1964 musical is based only loosely on P.L. Travers' classic children's novels. Mary (Julie Andrews) and Bert (Van Dyke) sing two memorable duets: "Jolly Holiday" and "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious."
4. In the Torah, which man (not related to Moses) was his aide since his youth and went on to become Moses's successor as the leader of the Jewish people?

Answer: Joshua

There was a special affinity between Moses and the younger Joshua (Numbers 11:28). He went with Moses up the holy mountain of God (Exodus 24:13) and served as Moses' general (Exodus 17:8-13). Upon Moses' death, Joshua became the leader (Numbers 27:18-20). Then he got his own book of the Old Testament named after him.
5. A sheriff in the Old West, Quick Draw McGraw was accompanied by a Mexican burro who was his deputy and sidekick. What was that character's name?

Answer: Baba Looey

"The Quick Draw McGraw Show" aired from 1959 to 1962. It won an Emmy in 1960. His deputy was Baba Looey, a brown Mexican burro wearing a sombrero who speaks English with a thick Mexican accent. For example, he called the sheriff "Queeks Draw." Baba Looey was not only Quick Draw's deputy but his friend, as well.

He often saved Quick Draw from a predicament or caught the bad guys by his careful and deliberate thoughtfulness.
6. Oxfordian Inspector Endeavour Morse was paired with a working-class detective sergeant who had not been to college. What was his young Northern protégé's name?

Answer: Robbie Lewis

It is rare that a sidekick reaches the point where he gets a sidekick of his own but that is quite what happened to Det. Sgt. Robbie Lewis on British TV's "Inspector Morse." Kevin Whately, as Lewis, was coupled with John Thaw, as Morse. The "odd couple" quality of their relationship was based on Morse's appreciation of opera, literature, and chess, played off against Lewis's simple family life and common tastes. Following Morse's death, Lewis was paired with Det. Sgt. James Hathaway, who was also full of higher education and deeper thoughts.
7. In the Japanese video game series "Mega Man", the robotic man character is assisted by a robot dog capable of turning into myriad forms of machine. Who is this robo-canine companion?

Answer: Rush

Mega Man is one of the earliest and most successful video game franchises. Beginning in 1987, Mega Man battles evil and overcomes badness. Beginning in the third series, Mega Man is accompanied by Rush (Rasshu) -- a robotic dog capable of becoming many things, e.g. a submarine, a jet aircraft, a motorcycle and a spaceship. He was named after the Canadian band Rush.
8. Alley Oop was a prehistoric character who wore only a fur singlet and carried a stone hammer. Who was his sidekick who spoke only in rhyme?

Answer: Foozy

In a syndicated comic strip first published in 1932, Alley Oop was a caveman from the Land of Moo. He rode his pet dinosaur Dinny. His best friend Foozy was bald with fuzzy sideburns. Foozy spoke only in rhymes. Ooola was Alley Oop's girlfriend; King Guzzle was the ruler of Moo. The strip was made into a short-lived television cartoon in 1978 which Foozy hosted.
9. Inspector Gadget's niece Penny has a canine companion who solves mysteries and rescues Penny and Gadget from Dr. Claw and MAD. What is Penny's pooch's name?

Answer: Brain

The Inspector Gadget franchise began in 1983 as an animated TV show and grew through films, live television, video games and comic books. The inspector is inept but devoted to his niece Penny. Penny and her dog Brain frequently get them all out of trouble by outsmarting Doctor Claw and his henchpersons in M.A.D. (which may stand for Malevolent Agency of Destruction).

When Brain disguises himself, Gadget often thinks he is a MAD agent.
10. In the Nero Wolfe mysteries, who is the narrator as well as the sidekick to the corpulent detective?

Answer: Archie Goodwin

Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe is an overweight recluse whose employee Archie Goodwin does all of the investigating outside of Wolfe's brownstone residence. While the great detective reads books, tends his orchids and dines on his personal chef Fritz's cooking, Archie is the legs of the duo. Beginning in 1934, Stout wrote 33 novels and 39 shorter works.

These have been adapted to radio, film, live theatre and television.
