Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jonathan Q. Arbuckle "owns" two pets in the original comic strip: Garfield, a lasagna-loving zaftig orange cat and which dog?

Answer: Odie

"Garfield" is a U.S. comic strip created in 1978. It has since expanded into many media. Odie is Jon's dog: a naïve long-eared Beagle who slobbers. Liz is Jon's girlfriend: a doctor of veterinary medicine. Nermal is a cute grey tabby kitten who Garfield keeps trying to mail to Abu Dhabi. Pooky is Garfield's teddy bear.
2. Father Frank Dowling is a Roman Catholic priest in Chicago's Saint Michael's parish. Crimes occur all around him, which he investigates with the assistance of what streetwise nun?

Answer: Sister Stephanie "Steve" Oskowski

In the NBC/ABC television series "Father Dowling Mysteries" (1989-1991), Tom Bosley played Father Francis Dowling, a long reach from his role on "Happy Days." His sidekick and driver is Sister Steve who grew up in difficult circumstances such that she speaks the language of the streets, can handle herself in a fight and even pick a lock, if the occasion dictates.
3. Who played Roy Rogers' sidekick Cookie in ten Hollywood feature films?

Answer: Andy Devine

Andy Devine (1905-1977) appeared in over 400 movies, ten of them as "Cookie", the sidekick to the singing cowboy Roy Rogers. He was probably better known for another sidekick role: Jingles on the Guy Madison television show. Devine was highly regarded in Hollywood; John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart both attended his funeral.
4. In Mozart's "The Magic Flute," Prince Tamino sets out to rescue the lovely Princess Pamina with the assistance of which comedic birdcatcher?

Answer: Papageno

The handsome prince (a tenor) is entrusted with a magic flute while Papageno (a baritone) is given magic bells to assist them on their mission. Poor Papageno is a sort of everyman, neither particularly good nor particularly evil. His goal in life is to marry a good woman. As the themes of the opera come together and are resolved, he ends up with Papagena, no longer disguised as an old woman, who is seeking a good man with whom to raise a family. Things work out well for Tamino and Pamina, as well.
5. Ricochet Rabbit was the sheriff of the Old West town of Hoop 'n' Holler. Who was his deputy?

Answer: Droop-a-Long

"Ricochet Rabbit and Droop-a-Long" appeared on American television as a sort of show within a show, first on "Magilla Gorilla" and later on "Peter Potamus." The programme was produced by Hanna-Barbera from 1964-1965. Deputy Droop-a-Long was a slow-moving coyote voiced by Mel Blanc.
6. Who is Sergeant O'Rourke's sidekick in "F Troop" at Fort Courage in the 1965-1967 ABC-TV comedy series?

Answer: Corporal Agarn

Morgan Sylvester O'Rourke (played by Forest Tucker) is a wheeler dealer at Fort Courage where he runs side businesses under the umbrella of O'Rourke Enterprises. He enlists his dim-witted sidekick, Randolph Agarn (played by Larry Storch), usually to the latter's detriment. O'Rourke ran a mail-order bride business, the town's saloon and an Indian-artifacts distribution racket with the local Hekawi Indians. Storch received an Emmy nomination for his role in 1967.
7. Mister Stryver is an ambitious, alcoholic and bombastic attorney in Dickens' "Tale of Two Cities" (1859). Who is his junior partner and drinking companion?

Answer: Sydney Carton

There is not much to say for Mister Stryver save that he is a better fellow than his companion Sydney Carton and not everyone would agree to that. Carton is, at least, reformed by the love of a good woman (Lucie) in the end. Stryver is too proud and too foolish to merit much. Dickens (no lover of lawyers) describes them both in a chapter entitled "The Jackal."
8. The Jolly Green Giant looks over the crops and people of the Minnesota Valley, assisted by which much-smaller sidekick?

Answer: Sprout

The Green Giant brand of vegetables was created in 1925 and the mascot of an actual green giant was created in 1928. The giant first appeared on television in 1953. His characteristic "ho, ho, ho" was added in 1961. And Sprout, the young green apprentice, was introduced in 1972. Sprout represents the consumer, e.g. asking questions for the large happy emerald fellow to answer.
9. In "The Life of Riley," who was Chester A. Riley's best pal?

Answer: Jim Gillis

"The Life of Riley" was an American radio sitcom (1944-51), a theatrical film (1949), a comic book (1958) and a television series starring William Bendix (1953-58). A number of others (including Groucho Marx and Jackie Gleason) attempted the lead role. Riley was depicted as a wing riveter at the Cunningham Aircraft plant where he worked with his sidekick, pal and fellow lodge member, Jim Gillis. Gillis was played on television by Tom D'Andrea. Thomas J. D'Andrea worked as a screen writer, in radio, stand-up comedian, actor in 35 films and on "Riley." "The character he played in the 'Life of Riley' was most in tune with his personality," said his son, Col. Tom D'Andrea in an obituary.
10. The narrator begins "Moby Dick" with a self-introduction: "Call me Ishmael." Who is his South Sea Island harpooner and closest friend on the Pequod?

Answer: Queequeg

In Herman Melville's 1851 novel, Queequeg is a cannibal from the fictional island of Kokovoko. His body is covered with tattoos. He keeps a harpoon with him, so sharp that he shaves with it. He smokes tobacco from a tomahawk. Through his close friendship with Queequeg, Ishmael learns to see beyond race and superficial differences into the deep character of another man.
