Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I'm thousands of years old and loved by many including the Romans, Greeks and some Egyptian mummies, thanks to Arab traders who brought me from India along the Silk Road. Which colour am I?

Answer: Indigo

Indigo has been found at archaeological sites, signifying Romans, Greeks and some Egyptian mummies were adorned with its regal colour.

It was regarded as mystical for its depth and rarity and when Isaac Newton detected it in a prism, added it as the seventh colour of the rainbow, seven being a magical number.

In the 18th century, Eliza Lucas Pinckney, manager of 3 plantations in North Carolina, planted Indigofera tincturia as a cash crop. It eventually accounted for over a third of the colony's exports.

The Indigo Rebellion took place in Bengal in 1859-60. It was mostly non-violent in parts but violent in others by indigo farmers against the European planters and merchants because of their unfair practices. The British colonial authorities put an end to those practices when they passed the Indigo Act in 1862.

3. The blood flowing through our bodies is made up of two main parts, red blood cells and plasma. Of the following colors of plasma, which is not matched with its correct classification?

Answer: Green - Icteric

Icteric plasma is a brownish orange color and is most often associated with an excess of bilirubin in the blood, often caused by a defect in liver function.

Green plasma is possible, although not as common as the other classifications. Most examples of this coloration are seen in people who take certain brands of oral contraceptive medication and this coloration caused in this way has not been cause any health issues within the body.

Normal blood plasma can range from a pale yellow to a deep golden color. Many outside factors can influence a change in this color.

Hemolytic plasma can range from a pale reddish color to a dark cherry red. This color change is caused by the lysing of red blood cells which causes an increase of free hemoglobin in the plasma.

Lipemic plasma is a milky white color and is often quite thick and chunky in texture. An excess of lipids and fat molecules within the plasma can cause this color change.

7. This American rock group was formed under the name Soft White Underbelly in 1967, but changed their name to another colour name in 1971. In 1976, they had a huge hit in North America with a cowbell-heavy song urging us not to fear death which was from their fourth album "Agents of Fortune". Which group am I talking about?

Answer: Blue Oyster Cult

The 1976 hit was "(Don't Fear) The Reaper", arguably the group's signature tune. It has popped up in many places since its release, from being played on the radio in the 1978 horror classic "Halloween" to being lovingly mocked on American comedy show "Saturday Night Live" in the hilarious sketch known as "More Cowbell" in 2000.

As great as "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" is, there is much more to the group. Personally, I think they peaked on their third album "Secret Treaties" (1973), which is my favourite album of all time. What makes them so special is the perfect balance between great music, intriguing lyrics, slightly unnerving imagery and a huge dollop of subtle humour.

9. Which colour completes the film titles "Deep ______", " ______ Desert", "The Big ______ One" and "______ River"?

Answer: Red

Dario Argento's classic Italian horror film known as "Profondo Rosso" (1975) in its original language was literally translated into "Deep Red" for its original release. It was retitled "The Hatchet Murders" in the 1980s, but it is now widely referred to as "Profondo Rosso"/"Deep Red".

Similarly, "Red Desert" (1964) is a literal translation from the Italian "Il Deserto Rosso". This was Michelangelo Antonioni's first venture into colour film, and boy did he go for it. Antonioni talked about film-making as like painting and actually did paint things in the landscapes he filmed so they fit his composition.

"The Big Red One" (1980) is a semi-autobiographical war film directed by the maverick American director Sam Fuller. It tells of his experiences in World War II as part of the 1st Infantry Division, aka The Big Red One due to the distinctive shoulder patch of a big red number one.

Howard Hawkes directed the fabulous western "Red River" starring John Wayne and Montgomery Clift. It was a critical success when it came out in 1948 and went on to become a much-loved classic of the genre.
