Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Benny Hill, Gert Frobe, Lionel Jeffries and Sally Ann Howes were all cast members in which 1968 movie?

Answer: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' was a musical fantasy starring Dick Van Dyke as an inventor called Caractacus Potts. He restored an old racing car into a mode of transport which had magical powers as a flying car. Lionel Jeffries played Grandpa Potts, his eccentric father. Gert Frobe is associated with playing criminal, Auric Goldfinger, in the James Bond movie 'Goldfinger' (1964).

Here he played Baron Bomburst who wanted the desirable car himself. Benny Hill played a minor role as the toymaker. Sally Ann Howes was very delightful and Truly Scrumptious.
2. Who was the first cartoon character to appear on a postage stamp?

Answer: Bugs Bunny

Bugs Bunny was created by Warner Brothers and was the first cartoon character to appear on a postage stamp. This occurred on an American postage stamp in 1997 and was an honour to be commemorated before the popular Mickey Mouse.

Mel Blanc was the voice of Bugs Bunny who made his debut in 'A Wild Hare' on 27 July, 1940.
3. Find the hidden word: I caught this crustacean playing scrabble.

Answer: Crab

S(CRAB)ble. A crab is a marine crustacean which has ten legs. Crustaceans are protected by a hardened carapace which covers their body and include crabs, lobsters, prawns, crayfish, shrimp, barnacles, woodlice and water fleas.
4. Brooke Bond is associated with PG Tips. What do the initials represent?

Answer: Pre-Gest-Tee

Brooke Bond was a company founded in the 1930s by Arthur Brooke in Newcastle-under-Lyme, England. The Pre-Gest-Tee was a promotion to indicate that tea acted as a digestive aid before eating a meal. Eventually Pre-Gest was abbreviated to P G. The 'Tipps' family were chimpanzees who were employed to advertise the tea product. Dressing them in human clothes and cleverly substituting words to the movements of their mouths produced comical catchphrases which were fondly remembered by the viewing public.

Brooke Bond provided picture cards with their tea. Books of each topic consisted of fifty cards. Some collectable Brooke Bond Picture Cards included 'Flags and Emblems of the World', 'Prehistoric Animals' and 'History of the Motor Car'.
5. Arthur Lowe portrayed Captain George Mainwaring in the Situation Comedy 'Dad's Army'. He was actually married to actress Joan Cooper who played which character in 'Dad's Army'?

Answer: Dolly Godfrey

Arthur Lowe (1915-82) was born in Hayfield, Derbyshire, England. During the 1960s he played draper Leonard Swindley who was jilted at the altar by Emily Nugent (Eileen Derbyshire) in Coronation Street. He made his mark playing the pompous Captain George Mainwaring in 'Dad's Army'. In real life he was married to actress Joan Cooper who was cast as Private Charles Godfrey's sister, Dolly.
6. Name the harmless shark that inhabits tropical waters and is most likely to be seen at night.

Answer: Blind shark

The blind shark acquired its name as it tends to close its eyes when it is caught by fishermen. These species are relatively harmless, although they can bite if provoked. During the day it inhabits inside caves and ledges in northern and eastern Australia and emerges at night to feed on cuttlefish, crustaceans and anemones.
7. Name the 1971 action thriller which starred Clint Eastwood as a San Francisco police officer.

Answer: Dirty Harry

Clint Eastwood played the character of "Dirty" Harry Callahan who had to catch a serial killer even if it meant breaking some rules by using uncompromising methods. The movie was directed by Don Siegel and was followed by 'Magnum Force' (1973), 'The Enforcer' (1976), 'Sudden Impact' (1983) and 'The Dead Pool' (1988) with Clint playing "Dirty" Harry Callahan.
8. Janet Webb or Arthur Tolcher always tried to steal the limelight at the end of which British popular comedy show?

Answer: Morecambe and Wise

Eric Bartholomew (1926-1984) took his stage name from his home town of Morecambe. Ernest Wiseman was born in Leeds and was known as Ernie Wise. They formed a formidable partnership in 'The Morecambe and Wise Show' attracting 'A-list celebrity' guests on their show. These included Dame Shirley Bassey, Dame Glenda Jackson, Sir John Mills, Peter Cushing, and Dame Diana Rigg.

At the end of the show an outsized Janet Webb use to appear thanking everybody for watching her show. Alternatively Arthur Tolcher would appear playing his mouth-organ. Eric Morecambe use to pause during a sketch and ask the viewers "What do you think of it so far?". It certainly wasn't rubbish. Alas these two iconic entertainers have passed away. Eric had a fatal heart attack in 1984 and Ernie died in 1999.
9. Name the football manoeuvre where a player kicks a ball through an opponent's legs.

Answer: Nutmeg

Nutmeg is a technique used in both soccer football and field hockey. A player kicks the ball through an opponent's legs, then nips around the player and collects the ball from the other side, while maintaining possession of the ball. There are a few ideas for the derivation of this phrase. One school of thought claims nutmeg is Cockney rhyming slang for leg.

Another spicier idea, pardon the pun, is ahem, the nuts refer to a player's testicles. Once again, some people think this is correct and others think it is all balls!
10. Spats Columbo is the main villain in which 1959 Classic Comedy?

Answer: Some Like It Hot

'Some Like it Hot' (1959) is a classic comedy with Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) are two musicians who witness the St Valentine's Day massacre. They have to elude their pursuers and escape by joining an all-girl jazz band who are heading for Miami, Florida.

The gangster character of Spats Columbo is portrayed by George Raft Alas, George died in 1980 from leukemia.
