Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What movie starred Dean Martin as an airline pilot?

Answer: Airport

"Airport" (1970) was an early entry in the disaster movie derby. In this one, just about everything that can go wrong with a plane or an airport does. It had several sequels, including "Airport 1975," which came out in 1974, "Airport '77", and "The Concorde: Airport 1979." I guess you just can't get enough of a good thing! The "Airplane" movies were spoofs of the "Airport" series.
2. What Arthur Hailey novel was made into a TV series (NOT mini-series) in 1982?

Answer: Hotel

The TV series starred James Brolin and Connie Sellecca. "Wheels "and "Airport" are also by Arthur Hailey, "Roots" and "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" by Alex Haley. "Miss Jane" (a work of fiction) is by Ernest Gaines.
3. What do ecdysiasts do for a living? They ______ (fill in one word.)

4. In Greek myth, who was Helen's lover who stole her away from her husband, Menelaus?

Answer: Paris

This of course brought about the Trojan War, depicted in Homer's "The Iliad." In "Romeo and Juliet," the man Juliet's father wanted her to marry was also named Paris, but no connection.
5. What character did Warren Beatty play in "Bugsy"? Give full first and last name but leave out the nickname "Bugsy."

Answer: Benjamin Siegel

Mobster Siegel hated to be called "Bugsy," and a scene in the movie that proves it is memorable for its brutality. Siegel conceived the Hotel Flamingo, the beginning of modern Las Vegas.
6. What region of the atmosphere extends from 12 to 30 miles (20 to 50 km) above the Earth?

The troposphere is the lowest level of the atmosphere, where the clouds are and the weather occurs. There is no metasphere.
7. What Germanic mythological hero was the title character of an opera by Richard Wagner?

Answer: Siegfried

Siegfried was a great warrior, which is why the Nazis named their defensive line at the western frontier of Germany the Siegfried line.
Their enemies had little respect for it, which led to the song "We're Gonna Hang out our Washing on the Siegfried Line."
8. In what work by Anton Chekhov does a man voluntarily give up the chance to get two million rubles?

Answer: The Bet

In this immortal story , a man bets that he can spend 15 years alone in a room to prove that life in prison is better than a death sentence. He reads and thinks a lot, and 5 hours before the time is up, he leaves the room, rejecting the millions, because he has learned that life is not really about money.

The whole story can be found on line. Just search on any search engine site. The other works are all plays by Chekhov.
9. The man who was born Leonard Slye changed his name. What first name was he known by after that?

Answer: Roy

Roy Rogers was a great western star in movies and TV. He was also a role model for millions of kids, a model of clean living and honesty.
10. Which of these is or was the name of a French jet fighter plane?

11. On "Everybody Loves Raymond," what is Ray's father Frank's favorite expression?

Answer: Holy crap

Frank would probably say something more pungent, but network TV is not quite ready for that yet. Peter Boyle, who plays Frank, starred in the title role in the movie "Joe" and gave a brilliant performance as the monster in "Young Frankenstein."
12. Which one of these was Marco Polo?

Answer: Venetian

Marco was from Venice, and of course he was an early adventurer who got to the Orient by land, a rare feat then, and supposedly brought pasta back from China. Did you know that when you go to the Italian restaurant, you're eating Chinese food?
13. Which of these is or was a brand of chewing gum in the USA?

Answer: Black Jack

Black Jack was made by the Adams Corp., which also made Chiclets. It tasted like licorice. Ranger Joe was a cereal in the 40s. Peppermint Powder is something I made up.
14. Tide and Charmin are made by

Answer: Procter and Gamble

P & G started in Cincinnati in 1837, making a line of soap and candles, the latter being much more crucial than they are today. It's safe to say that people then had a lot more interest in candles and a lot less in soap than we do today.
15. Yes, dear, faithful, patient trivia master, we have come to the moment of truth. If you have gotten enough right answers, you'll have no trouble figuring out that this quiz is about a trip to ________. Just fill in the blank.

Answer: Las Vegas

Hey, now! Bet ya got it. But if you need any help, here goes. You'll probably arrive at the airport (Ques. 1), Mc Carran Field. Then you're off to your hotel (2), which is probably on the Strip (3)--Las Vegas Blvd. You'll probably want to check out some of the spectacular hotels, like the Mirage (10), Venetian (12), and Paris Las Vegas (4), or maybe the Flamingo, built by Benjamin Siegel (5).

Some other things you might do are visit the Stratosphere Tower (6), where the view is the best, or go to see Siegfried (7) and Roy (9). If you're like most visitors, you'll gamble (14), maybe place a bet (8) at the crap(s)(11) table or play blackjack (13). And then you'll be leaving Las Vegas (Oscar for Nicolas Cage). Hope you enjoyed the quiz. Thanks. Mickey
