Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The fishing city of Gloucester can be found in what East Coast U.S. State?

Answer: Massachusetts

Gloucester, a historic shipbuilding city and long-established fishing location on the northern coastline of Massachusetts, was an early settlement in the state's history and has since become somewhat of a tourist destination known for whale watching, seafood, and picturesque lighthouses and harbours.

The city is also famous for its appearances in artwork and literary works; "The Perfect Storm" was set in Gloucester, and the city was allegedly an inspiration for horror author H.P. Lovecraft.
2. What is the name of this Wiltshire, UK landmark?

Answer: Stonehenge

Stonehenge, dating as far back as five millennia ago, is a series of specifically-placed stones situated atop a burial mound. Many have linked Stonehenge to folklore and pagan practices, believing the landmark to serve many different functions over time (including having healing properties) though their true use has eluded scholars. Salisbury Plain, the home of Stonehenge, is found in Wiltshire, west of London in south-central England.

It's unsurprising, due to the history of the region, that Stonehenge also factors into medieval myth and legend; the area is steeped in it.
3. Which of these African capitals, home to Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, sits on the Atlantic Ocean?

Answer: Accra

While people have lived in Ghana for centuries, the country never obtained independence from the British until the late 1950s. Accra, its capital, grew to become one of the most populated in the western reaches of the continent, becoming one of the most popular ports in that region of Africa.

In fact, the capital of the Ivory Coast to the west, Yamoussoukro, wasn't built on the Atlantic at all. The mausoleum depicted is that of Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Ghana after it obtained its independence.
4. Jukkasjärvi, home to an ice hotel, can be found closest to which Swedish city?

Answer: Kiruna

One of the northernmost cities of Sweden, Kiruna can be found in the Lapland region in Northern Scandinavia near the border with Norway. The ice hotel, found a short distance outside of Kiruna in the town of Jukkasjärvi, was the first of its kind, originally opening in 1990 and being rebuilt annually in different ways for tourists looking for something cool and different. Kiruna and the area around it are within the Arctic Circle, making suitable conditions for such a building to be created.
5. One of the northernmost counties of Norway, which of these contains the city of Narvik?

Answer: Nordland

A region of islands, glacial fjords, and steep mountains, Nordland is sparsely-populated and virtually untouched in many parts. Bordering Sweden on the east and snaking up the coast of the Northern Atlantic, it's actually not the northernmost of all of Norway's counties; Trom to the northeast and Finnmark to the northeast of that continue deeper into the Arctic Circle to make the northernmost reaches of the entire European continent and stretching further west than a substantial chunk of Russia. Narvik, a port city, is two and a half thousand kilometers from the North Pole, making it one of the northernmost cities on the planet.
6. Zayachy Island, as depicted, is found in what Russian city?

Answer: Saint Petersburg

Zayachy Island, found on the Neva River as it cuts through Saint Petersburg, Russia, is home to the magnificent Peter & Paul Fortress, built in the early eighteenth century and used by the government for hundreds of years after. While it was believe to be a place of torture and imprisonment for many years, it was actually a site of law, order, government process, and religious worship.

It's now used as a museum, a mint, and a mausoleum. Zayachy Island is also known as Hare Island. Originally, it was a swamp.
7. Jebel Shams, the highest mountain in Oman, is part of which Middle Eastern mountain range?

Answer: Al Hajar Mountains

The Al Hajar Mountains stretch across the northeast of Oman and a small part of the United Arab Emirates, skirting along the Gulf of Oman. Home to some of the highest mountains in the Middle East, these peaks were formed by tectonic shifts. Jebel Shams, the tallest peak in this mountain chain, is three kilometers above sea level, about half a kilometer shorter than Mount Ararat in the Caucasus to the northwest.

The name Jebel Shams is Arabic for 'Mountain of the Sun'.
8. Sadarghat is a public boat terminal in what Asian city, one of the most densely populated in the world?

Answer: Dhaka

Sadarghat is a pedestrian terminal for public boats in Dhaka, Bangladesh, one of many such locations along the Buriganga River, bringing people all throughout the city, home to over nineteen million people in its metropolitan area. Unsurprisingly, with that many people in the city, Sadarghat is often crammed full with watercraft transporting locals and goods. Also unsurprisingly, the Buriganga is highly polluted.
9. Cheung Chau is an island found adjacent to which of these Asian cities?

Answer: Hong Kong

Only ten kilometers away from Hong Kong by ferry, Cheung Chau is still considered part of the Hong Kong area (along with more than two hundred other islands). That said, Cheung Chau is relatively large an area, known for taking in tourists from the nearby metropolis and having a few small fishing towns.

The island is also home to some of Hong Kong's oldest temples (including Pak Tai Temple), the pirate cave of Cheung Po Tsai, and several ancient rock carvings.
10. Hangang Park, on the island of Yeouido, sits on the Han River. What city is it?

Answer: Seoul

The island of Yeouido is one of the most important in Seoul for commerce and banking, and Hangang Park, sitting on the edge of the Han River, is a bit of a respite from that. The Han River flows westward out of Seoul, leading to the sea. Before it does though, it converges with the River Imjin towards the North Korean border, forming the edge of the country. Because of Seoul's massive size, the Han River cuts through the fourth-most-populated city in the world.
